That was wonderful to hear about your Grandfather. Mine was a tobacco farmer in Cyprus. I never knew him to smoke a pipe, but I do remember when I was a boy that my grandmother would bring him a tray of cigars and cigarettes every afternoon for him to choose what he fancied. My great grandfather (also a tobacco farmer in Cyprus) would roll his own, despite the fact that the British wouldn't let him (you had to sell the tobacco to the British, then buy whatever they sold you back). They'd come every week, charge him his fine and he'd just carry right on.

Chris, I enjoyed the story of your grandfather and his pipes. I heard that my great grandfather smoked Sir Walter Raleigh out of a corn cob pipe. When one broke or wore out, he would replace it at the local drugstore. I always knew I would be a pipe smoker one day. At 52 years old, I purchased my first pipe, a Peterson, and have been amassing a selection of tobaccos to try. I have watched nearly all of your videos, some many times over, and have learned a great deal about everything pipe-related. I know I speak for many of your viewers when I tell you how much we appreciate the time and effort you have put forth in educating countless new pipe smokers over the years and helping us begin our own journey. My original inspiration came from Malcolm Guite. I saw a video, which randomly came up in my KZbin feed and he made pipe smoking and reading sound so relaxing. I have reached a part in my life’s journey where I am beginning to research and try different hobbies. So far, I’m loving the hobby of pipe smoking and I’m trying to be very intentional about it. I very much enjoy your videos and I find them very informative and also motivational. I hope you continue to put out good content. Talking about your grandfather brought back memories for me. My grandfather smoked a pipe too. I have no idea what he or any of his pals smoked but as a little boy I can plainly remember all these old boys cutting their tobacco from blocks of really dark, hard lumps of solid tobacco. Then rubbing it out and stuffing it into their pipes then being shrouded in clouds of smoke. All of them used matches and the village seat where they did their smoking was surrounded by a sea of used matches. Like you say from your granddad, none of them really looked after their pipes. I can clearly remember them knocking out the pipes after they had smoked them on the metal arm of the bench they all sat on. If one became blocked. Simple, all of them did the same thing and reach into a pocket and produce a penknife and start reaming out the pipe until the blockage was cleared. Nothing high tech for them. If the pipe broke....... get another one. Nothing fancy for these old boys. Life was so much simpler in those days. God only knows what they would think of the situation today.

It has now grown into a thriving online community with meetings, forumpipes, forum tabccaos, etc. There are several older members who smoked one tobacco for decades. Oh man my grandfather was just like yours. He smoked sir Walter Raleigh in big tins. I’m sure his pipes were cheap drugstore pipes, he’d smack them against the fireplace to get the ash out and I’d ask him what he would do if he broke it and he just shrugged and said he’d buy another one. WW2 navy vet from the Midwest, never had any money, but he had that pipe going 24/7. He inhaled it too. I'm with the utility smokers on this one. A few pipes, a favored blend or two. But my bowl still burns hot and generally the pipe goes out frequently. It is relaxing and enjoyable though, and I have improved. It takes practice. Muttonchop videos are the best resource for basic knowledge as well as to follow along the in depth discussions.

lowfunction 613 - If your not smoking using the breathe method you need to start, it will cool your pipe and it will stay lit. 👍👍👍
@lowfunction61366 жыл бұрын
Muttnchop Piper I did see your video on the breath method, but I have not been consciously practicing it. Thanks for the reminder, I'm sure you are correct about that!
@bveracka6 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more! The breathe method was truly a gift! It took me a while to get down (about two months). But when you finally figure it out, eventually one day it'll just click. Anytime I deviate from it and go puff-puff-puffing, my pipe almost always overheats, gurgles, and goes out before it's hit the heel. It's funny how I thought smoking a pipe would be so simple when I first began, but after nearly 6 months smoking at least one pipe every day, I've learned that it's truly an art-not a 1+1=2 type thing. Also, just like any art form it simply takes time to develop a feel for doing it and get pleasant results from it. You can rush it but all you'll get is frustrated and tongue-bitten. One other good piece of advice is to try and stick to just a couple of blends, and stay away from flakes, cakes, plugs, and ropes/twists until you can smoke your pipe consistently.
@lowfunction61366 жыл бұрын
Brandon Alan I see that this thread is from two months ago. By way of an update, my experience has improved markedly, as far as packing the bowl just barely tight enough and internalizing the breath method. The adventure continues! Happy piping.
@bveracka6 жыл бұрын
lowfunction 613, Good to hear! Yes, filling or packing is very important too. I like to say "fill" a bowl because you don't want to pack it tightly, as you've learned. For blends with a heavy casing and very dense flakes (even well-rubbed flakes), I do the "gravity fill". With drier, lightly-cased, and ribbon blends, I always tamp it down before lighting using gentle pressure. Even during smoking I evenly tamp around the edge and less so on the center. But regardless, always tamp gently. Muttn' has a great video about that technique. Finally, one great place to learn and talk about piping is Pipe Smoker's Forum. Anyways I don't wanna keep rambling on ya, heh. Best of luck to you on your journey and most of all, enjoy!

Another fine blended vid my friend. I too, was inspired by Tolkiens works and by the many men of that era. I would consider myself more of the connoisseur aficionado type. After many years of one dimensional cigarette smoking, I am enjoying the wide world of blends and tobaccos that the pipe offers and can not get enough. While I tend to lean more towards Savinelli's, I don't fancy any brand or shape over another but what is more pleasing to the eye and comfort to the hand. Sweet smokes amigo 😎

Always nice to hear storys of how the old generation smoked a pipe back then. My grandfather smoked a pipe in the 60's and 70's but then he quit smoking. He is still alive and he gifted me all his old pipes 4 years ago, I was so happy. The first thing I did was cleaning em up and making them nice and ready to be smoked again. His 7 pipes are now in my collection, I smoke them from time to time and keep them in good condition. And I have one pipe that I have from my father, he was always a non smoker but he tried smoking a pipe around 20 years ago when I was 10 years old, but it wasn't for him. With 13 I started smoking cigarettes in school and that was the time when he gifted me his pipe because he said that smoking cigarettes is very bad for me and that I should better smoke a pipe instead. I still smoked cigarettes but from time to time I smoked his pipe and the rest is history. Now I don't smoke cigarettes anymore....

I remembered standing on the seat next to him in his 1963 Chevy Pickup going to the barber shop or somewhere while he smoked on his pipe. Such good memories.

Well years ago when i smoked a pipe i had four pipes my Favorite blend was Captain Black because my Great Grandfather smoked this blend. I tried other blends but i eventually stayed with Captain Black. I have always enjoyed a pipe with a deep bend like Sherlock Holmes bend if this makes sense. Though i enjoy hand rolled Cigars im started to think about going back to a pipe

Dark and rich tobacco is by far my favourite, and I smoked it from when I was a beginner. Everyone said to try the less harsh blends first but if I smoked anything other than English I doubt I'd continue pipe smoking

your story sounds a lot like mine. some of my fondest memories are of my Grandpa smoking his pipe, especially on the holidays. he smoked Carter Hall because where we live, there aren't very many options for pipe smokers unless you order something or buy it when out of town. i started smoking a pipe while in the army and supplies were fairly easy to obtain. when my Grandpa passed away, my uncle gave me all of his pipes and pipe holders, etc. because I was the only other person in the family to smoke pipes, they are some of my prize possessions even though most of them were just cheap pipes from the drug store. I like to smoke when I can but it's usually when I'm doing some kind of outdoor work, fishing, camping, etc. I don't know, I just like it, can't really say why. But, I'm glad I found your channel, it's very informative and I can somewhat relate.

I loved listening to the story of your Grandfather. My Dad actually smoke cigars but I began my love of pipes from the gentleman across the street from us growing up. He loved wood working and would bring us an occasional bird house to put up and he always had his pipe in his mouth and when I would see him down at the local convenience store he would have it in his mouth and he was so polite and dressed well and friendly I guess I associated that with him and being a gentleman.

How completely awesome that you became interested in pipe smoking because of LOTR. One of my all time favorite book series. Love the chops sir. Hugs from a new pipe smoker. I hope to become a pipe collector. I do like fruity blends though.

ThePipingArtist Steph - hey Steph, yeah, I am the same, probably my all time favorite book series as well. If you like fruity blends may I suggest Appalachian Berry from Old Shenandoah it’s sweet and fruity, sounds like it may be right up your alley. 👍👍👍

No it's not fucking awesome all these people starting smoking cuz of a fucking book. Been smoking since 12 myself, can't quit. Got into pipes, can't quit. Many will follow the same because of a damn movie. Get over it. It's not that great of a series anyway. It's been done a million times, just without the ring.

Ahh, so there are extremes to TAD and PAD. Now I feel almost normal. Good Vid Muttnchop . What pipe was that your Grandfather smoked? Do you feel that a 50 year old Dr. Grabow would be on a par with some of today's higher end pipes?
@evan59446 жыл бұрын
Johnny B. In my opinion, older pipes are way more valuable. With age comes.... a higher awesome rating.
@lackadaisicale4926 жыл бұрын
Dr Grabow was and is a cheap end pipe, why would you think it would be anything else now, just because it got old? It's value is entirely sentimental.
@MuttnchopPiper6 жыл бұрын
Johnny B. - I don't know if there quality has improved, or declined since my grandfather smoked them, but, I suspect being a budget pipe it's probably not on par with a higher end pipe. 👍👍👍
@johnnyb.27926 жыл бұрын
I was actually referring to the materials used. Materials used fifty years ago may make it an average pipe today. Still as you say, With age...

Thanks for Sharing your grandpa's story... enjoyed it... I am almost two months in. So far I have purchased about 6 pipes and have almost ten tins. I classify my self as the second type you described. I dont have the need to collect pipes but did experiment with different shapes. I do like experimenting with different blends. My goal is to move into the utility pipe smoker and continue adding blends to my cellar. Right now I am focused on understanding the complexities of each leaf and flavors. It's fun! Take care and God bless.

AM G - yeah man, that's the part of pipe smoking I really enjoy, loading up a complex Blend, and trying to discern each Blend component, it's like when Violet in the movie Willy Wanka and the chocolate factory tries that gum that is a 4 course meal and as the flavors changed she could taste it. Let's just hope we don't turn into a blueberry lol. Lol. 👍👍👍

Ahh the good ol days. I only just turned 21 on the tenth, but I feel more and more like a man out of time. I just can't relate to this generation. While everyone I know is vaping and listening to the latest hits, I'm sitting in a rocking chair with a pipe and some Appalachian bluegrass in the background.

I really enjoyed this video and hearing about your grandfather. At one point after smoking a pipe on and off. I began to collect pipes ( new ) that gone for cheap on eBay. My favorite for when I gone out to “ play” like fishing or a day a field was a Dr. Garbow. Sadly they are far from cheap these days..

My great grandfather was part of the last category, he owned a hardware store and he would always have a pipe in his hand. But he had several pipes and he would constantly set one down when he needed to and then go pick another one up that he had set down before and smoke that one. Ended up having dozens of pipes laying around the store at one time. Really enjoyed the story of your grandpa! If I were to be any of these categories I guess I'd be in the last one
