I dont know what made me go looking for these videos, but I'm so glad I found them! I tried pipe smoking long ago, but it was before internet (or at least way before I was using it) and after my pipe loving Grandpa was gone. I didn't have anyone to show me how to smoke properly, so I gave up. I eventually picked up cigarettes (cloves mostly for the aroma, then switching to regular for the cost). I stopped altogether about three years ago. But now I want something soothing in my life, so I'm going to try the pipe again, but at least I have some guidance this time! Thank you!

That is great, and I tried pipe smoking 2 yrs ago and got frustrated, I quit. I decided to give it a try again and love it now. I watched a lot of videos and took my time. I rushed it before and didn't know what I was doing. Pipe smoking is an art and it takes practice. Never give up!

I actually got the info from an artisan pipe maker that ebauchon is harder and more dense as it lies on the inside of the root. Which would also make more sense phyiscally. What is more: They do normally not use water and ash. They use Natron water glass (Natriumsilicate) and activated charcoal to make a paste that hardens. Sometimes graphite or fireclay is mixed in as well.

Hi there Muttnchop Piper! I am new to pipe smoking and have started out with the classic corn cob pipe from my local tobacconist. I have been watching your videos for a little while now and the tutorials have been especially helpful! It has been a great journey so far, from correcting my tongue bite errors to gradually mastering the pipe packing techniques, your videos have helped me tremendously! I am in the market for a second pipe that will most likely be my first "forever pipe". Thank you for the quick tips and knowledge on how to pick the best pipe for my taste! Happy puffin'; cheers my friend!

Great video sir ,only a small thing i must add if i may ;Ebauchon is actually denser then the Plateu simply because the Ebauchon means the middle section of the Briar (Eric Arborea) burl and the Plateu is the outer side of it ,what i love in this plant is that in order to harvest the burl the plant is not killed ,the Erica Arborea is like a bush or shrab which grows basketball large burls underground following some insect infestation ,awesome wood ,a pleasure to work with it ,is like to carve a soap bar

Hey Chris, great video as we expect. I am somewhat OCD so I also look at the pipe to be symmetrical and check for the draft hole to be centered in the bowl and come in at the bottom of the bowl. May not be a big deal but stuff I look at. Thanks again and keep on making videos.
@johnuhl477
@johnuhl477 8 жыл бұрын
I would only add that the draft hole is continuous with the bottom of the bowl. This is much more difficult to find in bent stems. But with today's machinery, I think it should be expected.

Truth be told, I decided to take the easy way out (being a noobie and all) and bought the exact pipe you are using right now in this video and as part of your tobacco rotation. First off I want to say that I am glad I found your channel because I would have been absolutely lost in the sauce learning how to smoke a pipe. Thank you for what you. I watch a video every time I smoke my pipe. Now with that being said I am a huge fan of the meerschaum pipe. I have one and I want so many more, in my humble new opinion it is my absolute favorite to smoke. I get great flavor and the smoke is cool. So now when I look at pipes I am on the lookout for a cool quality meerschaum. I need to find a nice churchwarden meerschaum.

Hi Muttnchops, I really wish you'd do more videos on the Cob Pipes..... I understand your not the "expert" in the Cob experience, but I think we we would all agree that you bring more to the table than just the education. Yet, you never come up empty handed on your research about the topics you feel you need dusting up on. I really enjoy watching your videos because of your "down to earth" way about you and I in fact learn quite a bit. Except I am a tride and true Cobber and would love to see more videos on that topic. Thank you Muttnchop Piper , but with no disrespect to Aristocob, for whom I'm familiar with, I don't connect and learn from him as well as I do you........ and I'll admit I just don't enjoy his videos as much. (I absolutely mean no disrespect towards him.) I think the fact that your not afraid to touch on subjects your not the most educated on speaks volume, and I'm not afraid to dig for research myself. I believe I'm having a hard time explaining myself, and I apologize. I still stand by my previous statement and wish you would do more regular videos on the Cob pipes...... even if it was one quarterly, or even bi-yearly. I understand your a busy man and corn cobs aren't your thing though. No hurt feelings here what so ever. You just make it easy to learn from yourself. Thanks for replying. - Justin Aldrich

Another good video! Some of the comments refer to used or estate pipes. Perhaps you can do a vid on them too, about what to look for and avoid in buying them. I cruise ebay quite a bit and you can often tell who to buy from and who to avoid based primarily on the sellers feedback and whether or not he specializes in pipes. There are some very knowledgeable sellers on there. Anyway, just wanted to ask your thoughts on the matter. Take care buddy

I bought a briar pipe and it's got a lot of wood on it which makes it heavy when I clinch it by my teeth. I was thinking about working down the wood and refinishing it. There is a lot of wood on it, especially low on the pipe. I think I could remove a lot of wood as this thing is rather large. If I want to lighten it, how much briar wood do I need outside of the burning chamber? I'm thinking 1/4" would be all that is needed, but I'm just guessing. Any comment on this? This is only a $40.00 pipe, no fancy grain on it. Rather plain. Smooth finish.

Do you use a wider or thinner bored/bowled pipe for smoking aromatics? I am on a budget and want to get a pipe dedicated for aromatics and was curious if you smoke aromatics and non aromatics in the same pipe because of the difference with the heavy toppings/flavorings used in aromatics that you don't find in non aromatic blends. I have asked this question in the comment section of another person's channel and the maker of the video and some other people,who I would assume are his subscribers,kind of answered it in different ways but all came across as very condescending like I was dumb or ignorant for simply asking a question. My grandfather smoked a pipe as I mentioned to you before but he passed away before I was even old enough to purchase tobacco and before I had any interest in smoking a pipe. I have just gotten excited over finding you and your videos because you seem alot more genuine and inviting person and I just feel more comfortable asking you a question. Thanks again for your help and all your videos which I am hooked on,I wish more people would be as nice and as inviting as you seem to be. I truly do appreciate all the knowledge and information I am learning through your videos.Hope you are having a good weekend, Happy piping Sir! Braxton

80brax04 - first of all, thank you so much for your high praise my friend it is appreciated, now let's talk about Aromatics, you're right about the heavy topping some Aromatics have, so I dedicate 1 pipe to Aromatics, I used to be a heavy aromatic smoker, but I now much prefer English blends, but every now and again I feel like something sweet. If you are on a budget, I would suggest you use a corncob pipe as your Aromatic pipe, they are relatively inexpensive and well made, plus they don't ghost. 👍👍👍

Just pulled the Trigger on a new Savenelli rusticated half bent Author Hercules. My first Savenelli. Got some Maltese Falcon as well. Not a big fan of Latakia in the past. But I do enjoy Dunhill's Early Morning! Another great lesson MCP. What about a little honey to season the bowl? Some say it helps build the cake faster. Should I fill the new pipe half way for the first 2 weeks or does it not matter? One more question please. Last August I won the bid on an estate pipe on E-BAY. The pipe is a Webber Scoop. Smoke a Webber nun better. Think Rhodesian full bent. Looks like an Ice Cream scooper. Any how, the Pipe was made in the Late 70's. Never been smoked in original box. I was 9 years old when it was created. Smokes like a dream. I only smoke it on special occasions. I need to get a new stem made can you recommend anyone. I was smoking it last weekend and my bottom tooth punctured a whole just behind the lip. I had it clinched and it slipped when I was playing with my dogs and bit down to hard. Luckily I had some rubber slip covers. The pipe is to heavy to clinch. Lesson learned. Please forgive my spelling!
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 жыл бұрын
John Ferguson - great choice on the Savinelli pipe, the Hercules line is a fine looking pipe. No, absolutely do not line the bowl with honey, that’s just a myth, if you teach yourself to smoke using the breathe method, you will get plenty of flavor, and no tongue bite, encouraging you to smoke more which will build cake faster. It is An excepted practice to only fill the bowl half way for like the first 10 bowls, then fill it all the way after that. 👍👍👍

colton giddens - that has to be a personal choice, here is how to figure it out, look at the pipes you already own if you have a small medium and large pipe, fill the medium bowl and smoke it, if you burn it all the way down to the heal and wish there was more, then you prefer a larger bowl, if you can’t finish the medium bowl, then a smaller bowl is more to your liking. 👍👍👍

I picked up a pipe recently and I never thought to smell it fires and damn if it doesn't have a harsh, chemical smell (I smoked it once). I called the place I got it from to see if they would take it back and they wouldn't. So I'm stuck with it I guess. What I want to know (from Mutten or the club) is can this smell/taste be smoked out? I don't mind doing this if I knew this could be done. What upsets me is I don't have a lot of money to throw away. I only spent $35 but that's a lot of money to be just tossed out. A real shame, it's a handsome little guy.

So I just ordered a 30 dollar ebony scotte. It looks like ok quality. I know I'll probably go for something different but had to start somewhere. I want to stop smoking cigs by switching over to a pipe. I've been wanting to for years kinda just never did. I wanted to ask you. So as a cigarette smoker I like a dark strong kinda earthy flavor. So what kinda pipe tobacco would you say is dark strong and earthy. Would that be a dark burly virgin blend or?

Muttonchop, I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Peterson P lip system b and also bog oak morta pipes. Any realities l favorites in your collection?: How is your meer coloring going?

Thomas Trammell - I purchased a "P lip Peterson, tried it out, and found I didn't like it, since the smoke is directed to the roof of my mouth the taste went with it, and by the time it reached my tongue all I tasted was an ashy taste. I would love to try a bog oak morta pipe, but I have yet to have the pleasure, and every time I try and load my meerschaum I stop, because it's so beautiful as it is, I don't want to change it, but I will force myself to start smoking it soon. 😃😃😃

This is a great channel, and helped me a Lot as a begginer. I am now interrested in a Brebbia Pipe, but don't know much about that Brand. I am wondering if they are similar in quality to, for example, a Savinelli Pipe? Thank you very much, if you have the time to give an opinion. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Meló Manó - I have not had the pleasure of owning one, but that being said most people who I know that own one say they are a great pipe, with the quality of a Peterson, or savinelli, so I would say you would be safe in purchasing one. 👍👍👍

I'm not sure your distinctions between plateau and ebeshon is correct. They are not grades if wood, they are simply cuts of briarwood, and while more expensive - pipes made from plateau pipes are not necessarily $1500-$5000. www.naspc.org/archives/odyssey_3.html

I recently started watching your videos after becoming interested in pipe smoking again, and have found them very helpful. On my first go round I was smoking a cheap pipe and tobacco and it was not that enjoyable. This time I found a Savenelli Porto Cervo smooth 603 on smokingpipes.com on sales for $75, and I love it. I live in near Lexington, my and found Schawbs before seeing your video and bought a few of their house blends which I enjoy. Outside of complementing you on helping me get back into the Pipe world, I wanted to get your thought regarding the amount of pipes that most serious smokers own. I have limited resources as well, but I also believe in getting a pipe or pipes that I like such as the Savenelli. Outside of ghosting which I would thing your cleaning method should help with. Is it really necessary to own multiple pipes? I will have about seven belends in my collection soon, and I am wondering if smoking one pipe most of the time shortens the life of a pipe. I know very little about pipes themselves in regards to there longevity so I would like to get some insight on the matter.

Ron Hoskins - Ron, most of the questions you are asking I have done videos on. There is one I suggest you watch, its entitled "I now know how to smoke a pipe, what next" then just watch a few of my videos here and there, they are relatively short and should answer most of your questions. Regarding your primary question, can you smoke just 1 pipe, my answer is no, to get fair enjoyment out of pipe smoking, you need at least 3 pipes, smoke 1 let 2 rest, If your limited on funds Corn Cob Pipes are great smokers, and inexpensive ( $7.00 to $25.00) Schwabs has a large variety of them. Hope this helps. 👍👍👍

where would i go to find a plateau briar pipe?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 жыл бұрын
1 HP - that's a good question, since plateau is a type of quality of the briar, you more the likely will have to ask the pipe maker if it's made from Plateau. A couple of things to look for, first most plateau briar will have a smooth finish, and not be rusticated, because the grain is so strait and beautiful the pipe maker wants to emphasize this. Second, look at the grain pattern, it should be strait, and pronounced around the entire pipe. I hope this answers your question. 👍👍👍

Muttnchop Piper, I need some HELP! I had hoped to join the ranks of pipe smokers until I came upon renewing my insurance. I had to sign a affidavit that I do not use tobacco in any way or pay $50.00 a month insurance surcharge. I believe this is an invasion of my privacy as I had not planned on using the pipe anywhere but home. Do you have any suggestions as I could not afford any further increase in my insurance charges. Empty pipe

Eric Kelley - WOW!! That really sucks, I tell you what, they are really attacking us from all sides, if this is insurance you get through your work, I don't think there is much you can do except find another job, which in today's economy my not be a good idea, if it is an insurance that you get outside of work, see if there is another insurance company you could go with. At the very least you might consult a lawyer, most will talk to you for free. Sorry I could not be more helpful. 😒😒😒

so would you recommend against buying pipes online since you can't examine them?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 6 жыл бұрын
king james488 - I would recommend not purchasing a pipe on line from a site without guarantees, I have purchased most of my pipes from Smokingpipes.com because if I receive it and don’t like it or there is something wrong with it they will gladly let me return it. I would not on the other hand purchase a pipe from e-bay, I have known to many people who have gotten ripped off doing that. Understand this is my opinion, a lot of people say it’s a great way to purchase pipes, I just don’t have faith in it. 😏😏😏

whats your opinion on someone a few months underage smoking a pipe?
@MuttnchopPiper
@MuttnchopPiper 7 жыл бұрын
Cole Everett - I advise against it. Although a person may be a few months underage, there are laws that must be followed, these laws are in place to protect those society deems to young to make a rational decision weather something is dangerous or not. If a person is a few months under age they can wait until they come of age, in the meantime they can research the kind of pipe, and the blends of tobacco they want to sample once they get there, window shop if you will. Other then that, there is not much the individual can do because the law must be followed. 😏😏😏

Freedom of Speech - This Pipe has what’s called a stinger, it was a design improvement developed in the 1950’s, but for most it’s a pain because it often gets clogged, and hard to clean. Most people remove them, but save them in case they want to sell the pipe. Most people agree it was designed to attract moisture, but it didn’t to a very good job. 👍👍👍
