I found out the hard way as a young rider I was never fast enough to keep up with the front groups, 'til mile 120 clicks around. Now I love ultra-endurance events on and off road, it's definitely a unique niche of our sport but I thrive on those 10 hour days in the saddle, pushing well past daylight for the finish.

I love the tip to "get in over your head". That's the best thing to really find out what's what, it takes either ignorance of not knowing, or just confidence.

You can also use your power curve to figure that out pretty simply. That is if you use a power meter.

Hey Phil, maybe you can answer a question for me: I’m male 39, 230lbs, previous bodybuilder/powerlifting background, played baseball in college. I’ve been riding about 4 years and dropped about 70lbs. I did a few Cat5 Crits and sucked really bad. Suggestions on training are needed. Should I just do endurance rides, long and slow and try to work on doing faster rides to keep dropping weight? I probably could hit 200lbs by the end of the year. Should I mix it up and do intervals and try to get FTP up? Should I be doing threshold workouts? I need a real basic guidance on what you would do in my case. I’m not a fat 230 btw, you would think I’m a gym rat because I carry muscle and look like a track sprinter, but I want to be able to do some crits climb and be all around cyclist... what you think?
@raivkka43134 жыл бұрын
You won't know much till you get your weight down. 230 is a lot to be pedaling around.

@@MattPotter15 Don't fast, you will ride like shit. You just need to learn a lean diet. Oatmeal for breakfast, bout 1/2 cup dry with water no milk. Have a energy bar after first hour of riding maybe a banana, and low fat high protein lunch to follow up. As long as you have a low fat diet an keep calories under 3k a day your body will adjust, you wont loose your leg strength, but lean out in the upper body. Training wise I would focus on training blocks, there's tons of info on youtube to create your own custom training blocks. Just get your baseline ftp and you can set a very efficient training block. Its simple you spend hours on the bike, you will get faster, stronger. It never hurts less, you just get faster. For crit racing ESPECIALLY in low cat 5 etc, your finishing place isn't really a representation of your fitness. There's insane surges every other minute and riders simply ware each other out with lack of experience. Stay up front at least top 10 and draft AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, find a good wheel an stick with it until it fades, then find another. You stay mid pack or towards the back you will destroy yourself and never have a chance of winning. Best of luck man!
@MattPotter154 жыл бұрын
Tyler Scott thanks for the detailed reply! I noticed my fasted rides didn’t help fitness, but I did drop weight. I thought maybe to crash weight to more in range of cyclist weight. But I see your approach of doing it slower but keeping fitness and improving in time. Thanks for taking the time to reply!

You forgot puncheur, when you are surrounded by really steep short hills you end up becoming a puncheur no matter what you want/try to be.
@Northwindbreeze3 жыл бұрын
True. I love that. I thought the other dudes would love to burst out over those short hills but one gotta also have the physiology for that: if one is mostly type I fibers predominant, even if this person trains hard for becoming a better puncheur, he /she would have to neglect other training adaptations somewhere else.

When started cycling i thought i was skinny enough to be a climber at 67-69 kg and 183cm (6 foot) but instead of loosing weight from exercising i gained some muscle mass and now i am at 70kg which doesnt really make me a climber or sprinter at my height either. I guess im a puncheur or all-rounder.

I can follow a group and pull turns up to a 5% gradient, above that I'm getting dropped miserably, but I can't sprint at all. So I'm a fat time trialist then.
