I relate to that a lot, one small but impactful thing you can do to climb in lol is just doing nothing, what I mean is let’s say you are a midlaner, u know the enemy jungler is lurking around your lane and wait for the time to strike, so you will have to be patient even if you can pulverize the enemy midlaner easily due to how stupid he can be. Personally I’ve managed to get to diamond from just purely learn to stay patient, it’s hard to believe how so many people can fail to keep their composure and let emotions take control.
@TheMosquitoHunter2 ай бұрын
@@steviejrr yes, but there are different dynamics involved. For starters, there are many more low elo players than in high elo so, in proportion, there are many more bronze inters than challenger inters. Moreover, in high elo you have win trading, which may count as inting, but it's not done because they can't handle frustration, but to obtain specific things. While we do have the peculiar Dantes or Tyler1 around in high elo, it's not comparable to low elo statistics

diamond here just as many inters tbh
@steviejrr2 ай бұрын
@@TheMosquitoHunter So what you're saying is because there's more low elo players there's more inters. Of course, that's how basic data works. If there was more challengers than pisslows it'd be the same thing except more inters in high elo. Reason a low elo player is little bit more likely to int is purely because they know they're hardstuck and low elo and aren't good. When you're master tier for example you are going to try your hardest to get to Chall. Challenger players don't care about inting purely because they're already challenger and have no problem reaching it.

for me i think the best part about league is that when you get out of your toxic phase in league and enter "i have no enemies" mode, you can assess and think of the situation better than before like if someone is agitating you, intentionally trying to annoy you, etc and you weigh the pros and cons if what action is worth to engage and you can do that rationally. imagine being in a fast workplace where everyone can get mad over a simple mistake. this skill is crucial
@mogcat245Ай бұрын
so true so real.
@gwegsta972Ай бұрын
well, the toxic phase is made on purpose to keep you addicted, so to get out of a toxic phase, you need to fix the toxic elements, to ignore them, but how can you ignore someone who fart in the same room as you, and who close all airways ? Ignoring the frustration you feel, that a lot of time is legit, will make you suppress a lot of négative emotions, and you won't gain resilience, you will gain health issues. You will disconnect yourself from some parts of you subconsciously, thinking you are being wise, but later your shadows will come back suddenly and you won't understand what is happening. The skill to learn is temperence, sure, but you also need to learn how to confront people when needed too instead of never engaging. Plus, everybody aint wired the same, some people don't care, others are very passionates, and in a competitive game like that, it's normal to have strong emotions . So if the dev are creating and feeding that toxicity, you can't ask players to be gandhis ( even this exemple is questionnable, regarding some informations about him circulating on the internet ).

Is funny how this game unites a lot of really smart and competent people and make them all waste their lifes in a dopamine cycle edit for some clarification: the problem is not the game itself, is Riot Games where the time is getting wasted, if it was treated like an indie game and actually caring about its community and players it would be fine, for example terraria devs move way less money and still the most beloved devs out there because their updates are made with love and they listen to the community way more than Riot Games, is the corporative aspect of this game that makes league a waste.

This is my opinion: the main problem with league's dopamine cycle is you "don't get tired" like you cant play sports endlessly but you can league. Dopamine cycle activities are very good if you push yourself a little each time, not too far. Train - rest - repeat. You have to treat your mind sort of like your body, let it rest occasionally. the hints are there they're just different than physical exhaustion. "This game is hard" - this game was letting me curse the hell out of my opponents from 2011 to 2020, but then I started realizing various bad things about it - matchmaking, gambling, twitch streamers being pedophiles, meta being pushed by Riot, my champ never getting skins while others do, premades tryharding in fcking fun modes, etc... I took it to game chat, where I started talking on these things. Boom, banned. I went back from ban, did the same stuff, not realizing that's what banned me and not me cursing my opponents - boom, banned again. I started seeing a pattern. So I took it to League's sub on Reddit. Guess what, got banned from League's sub too, without any cursing this time. I've given this game a good solid 13 years, so I have some merit to judge on this topic - this game is not hard, that's bs. This game is hard to like, and once you like it and learn it, it's hard to *leave* it, because why would I spontaneously decide to leave something I both like and know how to do? The company doesn't allow any criticism on any website worth noting and nobody that started playing it with me in 2011 still plays it. We're not even that old, everyone just turned or is about to turn 30, we could play it once a week or so, and why don't we? Because it's utter tryharding trash. I proved my theory with WoW literally being chores upon chores, which I left 5 years ago, but regularly see my brother do his "daily/weekly chores" there; I proved my theory of YuGiOh being a cash grab, pathetic watered down farmfest featured by Konami striking at their player's nostalgia, when I left it 2 years ago but still see people complain exactly about that today; and I will prove it with League of Legends and Riot as the time goes on.

This raises the question: did playing League enhance your cognitive skills, or were your inherent cognitive abilities what enabled you to excel as a professional player? Claiming the former lacks any scientific basis. That being said, I really enjoyed your video and think you made some compelling points overall, but I felt the need to comment on this particular claim, as it doesn’t hold up given your arguments.

How can you prove that league trains your brain? Instead of showing that pro players have good stats. Maybe they are pro because they had these talents to begin with.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with your take, and I’m surprised more people don’t see it this way. I’ve also recognized that it’s a good tool to understand how I deal with various stressors like the feeling of lacking agency… during a time in my life where I felt trapped, being trapped in a game felt like torture because it exacerbated a feeling I was experiencing in my day-to-day life, but it also helped me realize this and understand ways to interact with my frustrations differently

As a player that fluctuates between master and grandmaster and has been #1 in my region at some points on my champion, I think I might be retarded. I do not function in real life, on the game I'm okay but put me in a real life situation and my brain shuts off. From my personal experience: Being good at League does not mean you'll be good at anything else.
@Madelong00632 ай бұрын
You’re not. It’s just that the brain doesn’t work the way it’s explained here. Find my long comment and notice what the real deal is. Bottom line is: you can’t extrapolate the things learned in league to the real life. No matter what anyone could say about it. It is simply impossible.

The reasion why leauge players are so toxic is not because of the game or thier behaviour its because we can see literally every possibility to do the right thing about minimum 5 to 20 things you can do and your teammate choice to do the worst thing possible and troll the entier game ( 30 minutes of your gobe because a dum ass didn't look at map or ping his enemy is missing ) This is why we go so crazy toxic when we lose ( after 5 years of leauge now i dont get angry any more i just get disappointed of the people i play withe ) A good mention today i played wild rift ( yes i play wild rift because its on mobile and take 20 max for a game Grand master ) New account for the free skin in a platinum game ( i played literally 60 rabk games ) i got again challenger 1 trick riven and i beat the sht out of him why? Kind feel like some of the data used in this video could be bit misleading. A lot of the evidence presented shows that having good neuroplasticity and adaptive thinking correlates well to success in league, but doesn't necessarily prove that league promotes the development of these traits. I do anecdotally think that the game does promote this type of thinking to some degree, but most people who play the game are likely not using their brain to the same degree that high elo players are. If we could have a study that took control groups and tested for adaptive thinking and problem solving skills of people that had never played league before and then got tested again after say like a year of learning the game, I would be much more confident in claiming that league promotes intelligence

I have fun playing league, but ultimately I dont play it as a game, I treat it as a form of exercise, like hitting the gym or playing basketball. Yes, it's fun, but more importantly it's really fucking hard, and when you try your best at things that are difficult, you achieve growth.

practicing farming with no enemies might be a boring warm up. But it is pretty much on par with meditation and praying. You force yourself through a boring task for 10 mins straight. Do that with no items. Just last hitting. Every slip of your focus gets immediatly reflected by you missing minions. At the end you get a score with all the creeps you farmed which reflects how well you did. This task just gives you enough stimulation so you have to give it all, but is too boring to be entertaining. You don't just learn to cs better. This task hardcore challanges the frontal lobe, which is directly responsible for your will power but also all your planning and decision making. Which op illustrated with his thoughts. But this skill is probably the most important in a persons life, as your day to day planning is controlled by the prefrontal cortex. Not just planning but also the ability to say "NO". Not to spend money on shit. Not to eat unhealthy etc. A lot of peoples success comes down to how strong this part of the brain is developed. Sure as said you can achieve the same with full effort meditation or prayer. But there is 0 feedback on how well you did. That's the beauty here. This game gives it to you as the very basic foundation to succeed in league. With every single day you play and every single game. Try to meditate that often :D

Lol, I'm a Karma support main. I have to keep track of where the jungler could be and where they are, keeping the game timer in mind to estimate the amount of time I have before the enemy jungler will be ganking bot lane. That's to know when to place ward in river bush. Then I have to keep track of ADC position and whether or not they are aggressive, passive, farmer, or attacker, and whether the enemy adc is also one of those things plus if my counter support is poke or melee and whether or not they are mana savers or mana wasters. Also, which minion to hit according to my support item. Should I take the minion or just hit the enemy. Then, the first wave enters bot lane. lol.

I really like the video, but I would argue that at 4:48 when you're discussing how you CS'd the wave, you're definitely making those decisions but they're kind of just given to you by your subconscious, you're VERY rarely ever calculating all of that in real-time, you're recognizing patterns that you already know the solution for because you've seen and worked with those patterns thousands of times. It's using very little of your cognitive ability, that's why you get better the more you play and the more concepts you understand because you package complex actions or processes into simple concepts you can execute automatically, almost without thinking at all, and saving your attention for more demanding or novel tasks. Edit: I do really like the callout for cognitive flexibility though, super cool :)

in 2019 I challenged myself to climb and learn this game while playing only Yasuo, starting from Silver 4. In the same year, learning how to use my brain efficiently, I became a huge Yasuo main and reached D4 (Yasuo only, meaning I lost a lot of time/LP dodging games when Yasuo is banned) The objective was to reach Diamond from Silver, in 6 months, which I achieved and the mental pain and exhaustion I felt was absolutely destructive for my health, because I had to smoke way too much weed to keep my emotions chill, and use absolutely all my courage to not get fed up by the trolls and the haters, because literally everybody hated Yasuo inters during that era and I was one of the few guys who had no intention in inting, it was hard indeed, but the hardest thing was to always perform when sometimes you catch yourself saying "dude I'm playing a video game, why am I being more serious than I am in my actual job? Why is this requiring me to be so good in order to climb, when other things in life require less and have better productivity?" League of legends is one of the best games we had to experience in this life, but in my opinion, it's definitely not worth it.
