I read somewhere that they kept Hailey Joel's line "every day" from Collette until the scene so her reaction was spontaneous. They were both really magic in that film, especially that scene.

@@SevenEllen We knew Toni is an Aussie from her earlier movies here. Victorian here. Still amazes me how well Australian actors do the American accent very well. I loved the tv series The Mentalist. Had no idea Simon Baker was an Aussie, had to google what he was in here when young, one of those soapies I never watched lol.

She AND Haley Joel Osment should have OSCARS for those roles. One of the best movies of all time. Iconic! Her American/Philly accent was incredible in that movie. She never named the Marty movie she was hoping to get. An amazing story of how whatever she missed could never have been the break of a lifetime with a Top 10 movie of all time.

“Bringing Out the Dead” was the Scorsese film for which Toni Collette auditioned, and it was for the role played by Patricia Arquette (married at the time to the film’s leading actor, Nicolas Cage). While promoting “United States of Tara” season 2 circa spring 2010, Collette was interviewed by Dave Davies of “Fresh Air.” Below is her answer of how she became involved with “The Sixth Sense,” and below that is the length to the full interview. >> Ms. COLLETTE: I was in New York, and I was desperate to work with Martin Scorsese. I went to audition for a part in a film he was making called "Bringing Out the Dead," and whilst I was here, my agent sent me another script. And I didn't know much about it. He told me it was a new director, writer-director, and it was starring Bruce Willis. And no disrespect, but I just thought I don't want to do a movie like that. I just made an assumption about the kind of film it was going to be. So I put off reading the script, and one night I was, you know, I was a little bit jet-lagged. I was up late, staying in a friend's apartment, and I thought oh, hell. I'll pick it up. And I couldn't put it down. And I just thought it was absolutely brilliant, and we all know about the twist at the end now, but man, the way you feel when you're watching it, I felt that when I was reading it. It was just so intense and so beautiful. I thought it was this beautiful, spiritual tale. So, anyway, I went to meet Night, and I auditioned, and that's that. I get a message one day from my agent, and I call him back from a - this was before cell phones, so it was just a pay phone on the street. And I'd - he yelled on the phone: Toni, you've been offered. And I thought he was going to say, you know, the Scorsese film, and I screamed in the middle of the street. And he said hang on, hang on. Did you hear me? You've been offered "The Sixth Sense." And I was like oh, no. And I remember feeling disappointed. Even though I liked it, you know, Martin Scorsese, you know, is like the be all and end all. So I went back to my hotel room, and there were messages from Night, and he wanted to talk to me before I was flying back to Australia, and I was avoiding his phone calls. I was, like, oh, God. I don't want to commit to this one if the other one happens. The other one didn't happen. I ended up having an amazing experience on "The Sixth Sense." I loved making the movie. I loved working with everyone on that. I've got some great friends from that film, and there you have it.

She lucked out big time in getting offered the Sixth Sense instead of "Bringing Out the Dead" (the Scorsese movie). Most actors would have JUMPED at working with Martin Scorsese! But ultimately, Toni was spectacular in the Sixth Sense. Not to knock Scorsese, but how may people remember or talk about "Bringing Out the Dead" nowadays? EVERYONE knows "The Sixth Sense".....
