6:45 I have heard that before about the size of face features but I just do not see it at all. All I see is a slightly smaller entire face with 35mm compared to 50mm and 50 mm compared to 85 mm. The face proportions are their same. Oh wait.. unless it has something to do with the centering offset vertically and horizontally from the image center. Any experts out there?
@wolfamri2 жыл бұрын
Well yes, if you place off center (particularly horizontally, the distortion will be bigger. Have you ever tried photographing the very same person with the same pose, composition etc. and the same relative size in your image and then bring it as payers into photoshop. It is most obvious when you have an exact comparison. The difference is admittedly not massive, but with portraits, small differences can make quite an impact.

Thanks, Eric! You really got me thinking there. Then I opened the original images in Lightroom and checked. This is kind of an optical illusion. The 200mm isn't wider. But I can really see where you are coming from. When I looked at the video after your comment, I though &$%§ I made a mistake. But then I tried to find out what the problem was and in fact it is correct. It just looks as if due to coincidence.

Boom...the 35mm really made my eyes go...wow, that looks great...then I realized it was 35mm and I was like...that's why. Lol. Yea...that is such an essential lens to have. I mean, it's just as necessary as having a charged battery to shoot with. My other favorite is the 50mm and 85mm. If I had the money, I'd make sure I could get these following focal lengths: 16/24/35/50/85/135/200. That's pretty much everything you'll ever need for the rest of your life. The only prime lenses I would get would be the 85mm. I think that one particularly is such a specialized lens that you'd reach for it when something is close to you.

@wolfamri4 жыл бұрын
so the subject will be a person? If yes, there is more to it than just the background sharpness. Did you have a look at my video the 5 factors of background blur? Also the distortion is an issue, the wider your lens gets. On the other hand, wider lenses are better suited for landscape because they show more of the scene and have gibber depth of focus. That’s what makes this question so difficult. Landscapes ask for the exact difference compared to what you need for portraits.

On budget: Unless you're a pro, the key to budget is usually to buy used lenses. It still won't be cheap, but it can become affordable, in particular if you can go back a generation or two. These lenses won't be all their newer counterparts are, but if you're out for a big aperture, you may find that for a fraction of the cost.
@wolfamri Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback, Magnus. The reason why I didn't like to buy used lenses in the past was that many people seem to sell the used lenses that they are not happy with - including those that are not sharp or have other flaws. I had my experience with that. That has changed with companies like e.g. mpb that let you send it back if you don't like it. What I still have to say though is that recently most new lenses have become exceptionally sharp, so it might be better to get a new third party lens than a used old one from the camera manufacturers.

Thank you for your feedback. That's a brilliant idea. I just had a look at the simulator. It's a little weird that the girl just becomes smaller when you change the distance. @wolfamri3 жыл бұрын
No stupid questions, only stupid answers 😉. Yes, you can. But not vice versa. For example with a kit lens you won't be able to choose a smaller f-number than f/3.5. So it takes dedicated lenses to get that low.

Your channel is simply magnificent. Can you tell me whether there is a difference between an APSC lens and a Full Frame lens when placed on an APSC camera? Example would be a 50mm APSC lens and a 50mm full frame lens. I understand that both lenses would have the effective focal length of 75mm (50 x 1.5). If both lenses are F1.8 are they the same, other than differences in quality and other features such as focus motors and buttons. The reason I ask is that including full frame lenses as a possibly option increases my choices of lens. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
@wolfamri3 жыл бұрын
Uso much for your feedback 🙏😉. There would be no real difference. An advantage would be that you are only using the center part of the full frame lens that is in general sharper than the corners. But a high quality crop sensor lens would make up for that. I hope that answers your question 😬

Hello! I love all your videos - they are so immensely helpful by being concise and to the point. At the end of this video, you said you’d talk about lenses on a crop sensor. Is that video uploaded? I don’t think I see it in the playlist.

Thanks so much, Melanie. I uploaded this video a while ago and got kind of frustrated that youtube wouldn’t show my videos in searches. So I stopped producing for quite a while. I will put it on my list again. Thanks for the reminder 🙏🙏

Hi again. Great explanations as always. I’m curious. If closing in on the subject and wide apertures both have large effects on background blur, which has more effect? Which will create more background blur, for example, a 135mm f2.5 that focuses at 1.2 meters or an f3.5 that can focus at 1 meter? 🤔 I assume it would be the same as the comparison of the 200/2.8 to the 85/1.8 as in the video. Does the aperture have the greater effect even on the same focal length?
@wolfamri Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Alvaro 🙏🙏. That’s a tricky question, because you‘d need first to quantify both, the distance and the aperture. So how much change of one value would you consider an equivalent change compared to the change of the other value. In your case they would be pretty similar. 1cm according to photopills. But photopills smallest increment is 1cm, which seems too much. I hope that makes any sense at all 😂

Thanks, I was just wondering why I couldn't eliminate the blurring on my photos, and this helped me understand my problem. So, I'm taking photo's indoors for photogrammetry, I assume then I need to use a large F-Stop but since that lets in less light I'll need a lighting setup to compensate for that.
@wolfamri2 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you have a tripod, you can lower shutter speed instead. That will compensate for the loss of light. Lighting interior architecture is particularly tricky, so I'd rather go with a tripod instead.
@unrealdevop2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfamri Yeah that could help too? I'll test that out then tonight when I get home then. The problem with lowering the shutter speed is that it gives really good quality, but I do get a bit of ghosting around the silhouette. To top it off it can dramatically increase these takes because they require hundreds of pictures to get a good output. It also requires little noise though...what I was going to do is use an AI Denoise software to remove the noise so that I could use faster shutter speeds without having to worry so much about the noise.
@wolfamri2 жыл бұрын
What exactly are you doing? I use Topaz Denoise AI and sharpen AI. I even have a 15% discount code if you’re interested 😉
@unrealdevop2 жыл бұрын
@@wolfamri Oh yeah, I was going to use that specifically actually. I'm turning the photos into 3D Models, it's very sensitive to blurring/distortions and Noise and all the photos require a good bit of overlap so that it can identify things between them.

Hello Photo 1x1. I really got to understand what lenses are and how the focal length is buy watching your two videos (part 1 and part2) Thank You very much. Although i still don't understand something. During the video you said something about the f. Number affecting the amount of light entering the camera. And amount of light in the photo. I don't really understand that please. Can you help explain it to me again or direct me to a video? Thank you

Hey Attahir. With pleasure. Please have a look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpixcotjnbCDi5I the f-number stands for the aperture.
