Learning to photograph action on the field and also develop really dramatic, edited individual portrait type images, are my goals. I’m watching all of your videos. Thank you from a football mom hoping to make some good memories for my son and team. Upon purchasing my new camera, I was advised to try Canon’s RF 24-105 mm f/4 L IS USM lens and Canon’s RF 100-400 mm F5.7-8 IS USM. Nikon DSLR shooter here. Both my wife and I have the same camera body D7500. Much of our photography is of wildlife especially birds. We’d like to move to mirrorless, but Nikons offerings just don’t seem to be on the same level as the competition. Just looking at some of Simons work with his mirrorless is pretty spectacular so I’m inclined to switch brands, but it’s so expensive to do that. It’s kind of disappointing Nikon hasn’t seemed to keep up, but for now we still get nice results from the equipment we have. My wife has Nikon 200-500 zoom which is excellent but very heavy so I bought a gimbal for her tripod. I use a Sigma 100-400 lens which on my my crop sensor camera is 150-600. It’s pretty good too but it’s slower and the autofocus isn’t quite as good as the 200-500. Thanks Simon sharing your knowledge and being an inspiration for us!

Are you « prime type of person » or a « zoom type of person » and why? I’d love to know to help me make relevant content!
@danderth Жыл бұрын
I would like to try some prime lenses, but I've only ever used zoom lenses because, as a hobbyist, I thought it provided the best option.
@tonyburford421 Жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I think it’s generally accepted that primes are sharper but I shoot with canon ‘L’ zooms (17-40 f4, 24-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8 and 100-400 ii) the only reason for this is cost. I,m a hobbyist so the amount I have to invest is limited. Think how many primes I’d need to cover this range!! Although I’d love a 500 f4. These are mounted on a Canon 5D4.
@simon_dentremont Жыл бұрын

Since moving from a film-SLR to a Super-zoom (fixed lens) digital and now (finally) to a real DSLR I prefer prime lenses except for family parties or public events. I'm just about to "trade-in" my old SLR lenses for a DSLR wide-angle zoom. (A lens type which I have NEVER owned...yet)

@matthieuzglurg6015 Жыл бұрын
hey there ! When talking about the aperture, it's easy to get things mixed up when you are a beginner so I'd like to add some things to clear some stuff that you may have glanced over very quickly in this video: First of all, the aperture is proportional to the focal length. An f/4 aperture on a 20mm lens will be 10 times smaller than an f/4 aperture on a 200mm lens. The reason for that is to keep the same amount of light coming into the camera without hurting our brains when we want to judge the exposure of a scene. A wider field of view will mean that the light from a much larger area is coming into the lens. With a longer focal length, if you want to match that quantity of light, you'll need a much larger opening to let the light pass through. Also, the reason we write the aperture as "f/1.4" or "1:1.4" right after the focal length is not a coincidence. "f" means focal (as in focal length), when you're saying "my lens opens up to f/4" it means the diameter of the opening is the focal length divided by 4. (Diameter of the aperture (mm) = focal length (mm) / aperture number (no unit)) There is also several misconceptions when it comes to the aperture and crop factors. Technically, you can apply the crop factor to both the aperture and focal length, however people generally mistake the focal length / aperture with their equivalents. a 50mm f/2 lens put on a full frame camera will give you a certain angle of view and depth of field. If you put that same lens on an APS-C camera, you turn your 50mm into a 76mm equivalent, but the depth of field is still what you'd be expecting to get from a 50mm f/2 lens. If you were to put a 76mm lens on a full frame camera, the depth of field at f/2 would be shallower because of the longer focal length, so you can also have an "equivalent aperture", meaning the aperture you would need on a 76mm lens on a full frame camera to achieve the same depth of field. It is then reasonable to say that a 50mm f/2 lens on an APS-C camera would give the exact same image as a 76mm f/3 lens (1.52x crop factor applied to both focal length and aperture) on a full frame camera. HOWEVER, and this is where the biggest confusion happens, this is strictly in terms of depth of field and angle of view. IT IS NOT applicable to exposure like some people tend to make you believe. A crop sensor will not get "less light" than a full frame sensor (as light is a matter of density, so technically amount of photos per unit of area. It will matter for noise levels, but not exposure itself), and the exposure on both cameras will be the exact same if you put the same lens on them. The better way would be to make up your depth of field relative to your focal length (not the equivalent focal length) and aperture, but that could also bring confusion once several sensor sizes are mixed up. Anyway, that's all I wanted to add, I hope that helps ! Thank you Simon for the video and congrats on your 1 year anniversary !

I own Canon m50 and my favorite lenses are native 22mm prime (pocketable), EF 35mm prime (default lens for me), EF 24-105mm f/4, EF 70-200mm f/2.8 (with booster) and EF 100-400mm (with adapter for birding). I tried telephoto primes, but encountered too many situations when I would rather have zoom. Situations when I needed more grip while birding were also more frequent for me than the opposite was the case. So, relatively dark 100-400mm on APS-C is as good as it gets for what I do (especially with booster as an option).

I shoot with primes. I find when I use zooms that I settle for a composition by just zooming till I like what I see, versus moving around and experimenting until I find the best (for me) composition. I completely understand the versatility and convenience of zooms, but they make me speed up and lazy haha. I prefer to slow down, experiment, and work towards finding the shot. I also find it helps you pre-visualize your shot better, as you start to think in terms of which focal length you will need before you reach into the bag. But for others it maybe the opposite!

At 11:53 you said: "most brands except Canon will also allow you to put a crop sensor lens on a full frame camera". This was true for Canon DSLRs. On Canon RF mount FF cameras you can use EF-S (crop sensor EF) lenses with an EF to RF adapter. The camera will detect this and switch to crop mode. As I don't own any RF-S lenses I can't verify that they can be used on FF cameras but as far as I know this works as well. The reason why EF-S lenses on FF DSLRs did not work was because the mirror is larger on FF than on crop sensor cameras and the rear elements of EF-S lenses are too close to the sensor plane to fit a FF mirror between the sensor/shutter of the camera and the rear elements of the lens. With mirrorless cameras the isn't an issue any more.

Happy One-Year Anniversary! You deserve every success! As a not-beginner photographer, you still hold me by the way you share your knowledge. At times, you still teach me something new, other times you remind me of something I should have remembered but have gotten into a bad rut. Either way, I enjoy all your videos. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. As to your question, most of my lenses are zoom for practicality while being aware of the trade-offs. I’m mostly a birder, but always want to be prepared to take landscapes. With only two lenses, I’m usually covered. I recently bought a 4/3 camera as a “walk-about.” Even then, I opted for a zoom to cover contingencies (that odd pigeon 😊). It also guarantees I won’t be dragging by the end of the day.

Excellent as always!! I am an underwater photographer and I use a mix of zoom and prime lenses. Prime for macro and zoom for other. You can't change lenses underwater so choice of type of lenses is critical based on the marine life you intend to photograph. If intended to shoot macro but no macro subjects to be found once you are underwater, you are usually out of luck (unless you be creative and shoot unconventional shots).
