WD stands for water dry, not lubrication. 3 in 1 used Very Sparingly works fine. Don't just pour it in. Use a cocktail stick.

I've been mindlessly using "3 in 1" oil on my guitars, and some say it's safe to use, but after doing some research today I see that may not be true! Sewing machine, clocks, fishing reals, all use lubricant specialized to lubricating enclosed gears, motorcycle chain oil both lubricates and repels contaminants from sticking. Stewmac sells "Triflow", which is teflon based if I remember correctly, it comes in a handy little syringe looking container designed to fit the little hole on the back of kluson tuners. Fortunately I was only putting "3 in 1" oil in that little hole, but then I would turn it a bit and do it again... Oh well, a good excuse to upgrade them? I'll just save the original tuners in case I ever sell it, more likely my family will inherit them 'cause I'm not selling! I need to do my research first before doing things, like using "3 in 1" on my gears, it's more for stuff like hinges on doors than enclosed gears?

Hi Drew, especially the Kluson have the hole to put grease in, NOT oil! In general all tuners should be greased. Because of its viscosity, oil is not the matter of choice. Best wishes >Lutz

Agreed. Any mid to low viscosity lubricant like machine oil, reel oil, sewing machine oil etc... will likely be wicked by any unfinished wood (like under the tuners) and can and will soften and discolor the wood in a permanent manner. I use only a high quality grease, like lubriplate or white lithium grease for all tuning machines.
