After 5 Smackdown games on the Playstation consoles, it was time for a change. Smackdown Here Comes the Pain was the last entry in the Smackdown series. The new series that was taking its place? Smackdown vs Raw. How did this game do in following up HCTP? Arguably the greatest wrestling game of all time. How would Yukes and THQ start off their new series? Whereas before in HCTP, you had two types of submissions (one where you tapped a button to fill the meter and another without) SvR introduced the Type B (Blue) submission holds, where the meters were like ping-pong and you had to fight the CPU for the win. Of course there were instances where you could use the default wrestling headlock and win an entire game in a few seconds, but...

The original SVR is kind of underrated in a way. The first wrestling game to introduce the wrestler voice overs & heavily involved the 2 brands. Plus it was the first game to have the create a PPV mode where you basically set up your own matches on a PPV it was a really underrated feature. And how about that great season mode huh?

One thing we don't talk about is the standard of wrestling at that time. Good wrestling shows are a major reason behind good wwe games. WWE took itself seriously back in the days. Length intense matches, entertaining roaster, hyped story lines, brutal bloody matches, beautifully designed arenas and it reflected in their games too. Today, not just the game, but WWE itself has become a Joke.

I’m 35, I fell out of love with the wwe ages ago and I’m not up to date on current events. However, I recently dug out my ps2 and played through the entire season mode. Loved it, had such nostalgia and it made me go and subscribe to the network so I could go back and watch smackdown and raw in 2004. Smackdown in particular was crazy back then. JBL, Angle as GM, Cena being “stabbed” so he could be written off tv, Big Show being shot live on air. Fantastic memories.

I still play SVR on my PS2 alot. What I like about it is that when you customize the rules in the settings it affects the season mode matches not just exhibition like most WWE games. I also like how experience points earned during season mode can used on any wrestler's stats not just the one you are using. I also like how the stat improvements are permanent. So if you want to do a new season with another wrestler you don't lose thier maxed out stats. It can make for some challenging matches when everyone has max stats and you're playing on Legend difficulty.

i played this game for the first time in an emulator this year.. i was surprised how good it was because you don't hear much abt the first svr. and i love that firefly song!

This was the first ever game I bought on the ps2. This game was fire. The best wrestling game ever in my opinion. Spent countless hours playing as a ten year old. Waking up at seven in the morning in the weekends just to play this game until midday. ahhhh nostalgia.
