"I don't even know what to say" is the sort of reaction that ONLY Madonna could ever evoke, because she works on a completely DIFFERENT level - there's a reason why I hate seeing her being put in the same category as any other basic pop artist out there, it's extremely insulting

1998. 13 years after Material Girl video. The song and video represent Madonna's reflection on chasing, achieving, and living with fame. After studying esoteric ideas, and the birth of her first child, she found deeper meaning in life. She was able to see how she was using fame as a replacement for love, especially the love of her mother, who passed away when Madonna was very young.

This song is from her 1998 blockbuster Ray Of Light (ROL) album that sold 16mil copies then. It’s a turning point era in her life and career. In 1996, she completed her major, award-winning role as Eva Peron in the film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical Evita. In October 1996, at age 38 she gave birth to her daughter Lourdes, finally receiving the gift of motherhood she had longed for but did not happen during her failed marriage with actor Sean Penn. During this ROL period, Madonna was deep into a spiritual journey/exploration of Hinduism, Buddhism, Ashtanga yoga, and Kabbalah/Judaism-which influenced and inspired 4 of the 13 songs from the track list of the ROL album: #6 Nothing Really Matters, #7 Sky Fits Heaven, #8 Shanti/Ashtangi, #9 Frozen. These watershed events would changed her views of fame, the artificiality of celebrity limelight and attention, and the realization that the love between her and her daughter, her responsibility towards nurturing her child is her new “religion”. I appreciate and enjoy your covering and reacting to Madonna’s musical artistry.

I completely fell in love with the moody production throughout this entire album. It was the first album after she had her first child and she was much more mature and reflective in her writing. This is from 1996, Madonna was about 39 here. Definitely check out more from this album. All the videos she released from it were gorgeous! The POwer of Goodbye, Nothing Really Matters, Ray of Light are definite highlights.

I'm only 31 now, but I can say that I'm a Madonna fan as long as I remember, so it's been a lot of years listening, watching, studying her work, her career. And it's very interesting watching your reaction listening to some of her songs for the very first time, especially in cases like this one, because Drowned World is one of her marks, you know? I noticed you guys were so impressed. Even not knowing exactly the reason, you felt. This is a very spiritual song, it opens the Ray Of Light album and it not only talks about motherhood, personal transformation and the effect of her past in her present, but it also tells (on the video) a story and criticize the abuse of paparazzi and fame has this negative side. The storytelling in it all is just amazing! It is a very intimate and honest. The late 90's was a life changing moment for Madonna. Very positive in many senses. I really enjoyed this, I've been watching you and I like your channel very much! Do more Madonna, maybe some full concert. You'd be impressed :-)

The video which was released in 1998 took inspiration from the Princess Diana tragedy that occurred a year before. The video illustrates that fame and fortune are a "Substitute for Love" and how she realized how wrong she was over the years. Very personal and vulnerable track.. a highlight in her discography.
@WilUnleashed
@WilUnleashed 2 жыл бұрын
This is from RAY OF LIGHT album... the same album which you reacted to Frozen and Power of Goodbye. All part of the same album. This particular song is depicting her life as being stalked, harrassed by the press. Keep in mind, this was after Princess Diana was killed. So there were comparisons made in this video to how Princess Diana was treated and stalked by the press. Of course, Madonna can speak of it, because she's suffered from being stalked by the press as well. All in all, the song is about coming to realization that fame and fortune isn't what it's cracked up to be. You also have to keep in mind, a year before she gave birth to her first child. Her perspective on life changed. This song represents that.. showing there is far more important things in life than being famous.

Very surprised to see Drowned World on here. Wow. Nice. Ray of Light was nominated for AOTY. It ended up winning a few Grammy’s including best pop album, best dance recording, best video for Ray of Light. Its not my favorite of her albums, but its up there as one of my faves. Late 90’s. It was spectacular. My favorite is Ray of LIght and Power of Goodbye from the album. Another good song, not from this album, that I always liked was Rain.
