There are different types of leaders but I believe the best know how to lead by example, communicate well and when they give you a compliment you feel taller and stronger. In this OSA video are key points that I believe make a great captain. I'm sure there are more so please feel free to post your opinions in the comments about what you think makes a great captain.
Key Points:
#1. Lead by example. If your teammates see you being positive and working hard, they will follow suit.
#2. Be encouraging and positive when teammates mess up. If someone makes a mistake be the first to say "Keep your head up buddy. We all mess up. We trust you, just get back on defense". Don't yell at players for messing up. That will cause them to play scared and you don't want that because it causes them to make even more mistakes.
We all make mistakes, it's part of the game. No one is perfect. Now, if a player messes up three times in a row because they clearly are not paying attention then you can give them a shout telling them to "wake up and pay attention."
#3. Throw a team party, BBQ, watch a big soccer game on TV or have a movie night. Getting your team together off the field occasionally is a great way to build team spirit and chemistry. My old Chicago Fire captain, Chris Armas, would host a BBQ at his house 1-2 times a season and it was good to get the team together outside of soccer.
#4. Be confident, not cocky and remain humble. Always pass credit to your teammates when you can. Let's say you score a great goal. A bad leader says, "Yeah my goal was legit, I'm like the best player on the field and I just shot it as hard as I could and smoked it in there." A great leader says, "Yes, my goal was nice but WOW, what a ball from Billy. He made it easy for me to do my job."
#5. Make the players around you better. You do this by doing all of the earlier key points and encouraging your teammates. Do this and you will be a better player. Coaches want leaders on their team that make others better.
#6. Communicate loud and clear on the field saying, "Man on", "Turn", "Switch it", "Come on boys, let's go", etc.
#7. Be aware of what a teammate is going through and talk to them privately. If you see a teammate is having a bad session talk to her quietly at the water break. More then likely something is wrong outside of soccer that is causing her to play bad. If you don't ask, you won't know.
#8. Organize your bench area and keep your fields clean. Make sure your teammates have their bags in a line, with all their equipment in their bags and don't leave any trash on the field. Plastic cups, orange slices, pre wrap, etc all needs to be going into the trash can, not on the field for the next team to deal with. Take care of your park and let your teammates know it's not acceptable to litter.
What Player Could Be Doing Wrong:
Some things that could be going wrong. If you are trying to hard to be Captain or not playing well because you are not Captain then you are going about it all wrong. The best captains don't need to be titled "Captain". They are going to be a great leader no matter what. Be that type of leader and if you officially get recognized for it as team captain then great; congratulations. If not, no problem; you can still be a leader your teammates look up to.
