Absolutely true. I usually rate between 94 and 100 percentile in conscienciousness. I had a tough childhood with deprivation and witnessed human degradation. I absolutely do not want to go down that path and absolutely think most people are there because they chose to be. I'm also very sensitive to security, law, order, moral values and protecting what people have built. The victimhood mentality of today absolutely disgusts me because it takes away the power that the individual has to iniciate change in his life. Of course, such argument (victimhood) serves crooked politiciants.

Some people are so blinded by their experiences that they do not KNOW they are in a cycle, thereby unable to escape it. Be grateful that you were able to escape that cycle - by the grace of God you were able to recognize the patterns. Trust me, if it weren’t for Gods grace, you would not have seen through the veil to make necessary chances.

I have EXACTLY the same experience. Very high in conscientiousness, terrible childhood filled with poverty, divorce, abuse, victim mentality and self sabotage. I'm not a materialistic person, so what drives me isn't money (reward), but rather trauma. That's why I NEED to get as far as I can from how my family lived. I dived into psychology and read about healthy romantic relationships so I could take apart what my family did wrong. In order to (hopefully) never fall in their patterns of life again. Money for me is a tool to get away. This video hit the nail on its head. And so did your comment! I hope one day we feel true security and peace. Good luck my friend.

They're usually low in Openness to Experience and Agreeableness which explains why they're so pathetically stupid. They can't think beyond themselves and that's why don't understand why the world is like it is.

I greatly appreciate that you break these lectures into bite sized bits to really chew on. Dr JP's lectures are all fascinating in their entirety, yet these micro portions that comprise them are also full of good insights. Thanks for putting your time and effort into something truly valuable. Your hard work is visible in the quality of your videos. Keep up the great work. Dr Peterson would be proud. :)

What motivates conscientious people? I don't thing conscientiousness has a singular motivating factor. The urge to undertaking financial responsibilities buries one deeply into their work to increase productivity and income. In this case you do things you don't necessarily like just to get the money. It is easy to be conscientious on anything when it aligns with your interest. Goals and aspirations. May I add that I observed that highly conscientious individuals are more brawls than brains

It’s an interesting concept but as for my experience (being someone high in consciousness) I would say it’s a matter of self identity. I have always pictured myself as an organized/hard working person, so my actions throughout the day are oriented in a way that I affirm to myself that I posses such traits.

I spent ~30 years leading a small local volunteer citizen group that focussed mostly on cleaning up a seriously toxic polluted river, bay and local community. I had several motivations: 1. Deep NOSTALGIA for a more wholesome past when local wildlife was healthy and abundant, and when it was safe to eat local fish, turtles, frogs & ducks, and safe to use local waterways as public drinking water sources, and safe to breathe the air. 2. Bottomless FURY at the smug industrial polluters and the politicians who let them keep spoiling it all. 3. I needed my life to have MEANING and to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. 4. I wanted to become a leader I could be proud of … a “hero in my own mind” at least (… I needed to know I’d done everything I could to fix things). 5. I was desperate to BELONG to an exciting group of assertive and creative “world saver” activists. I was desperate to earn their respect and lifelong friendships. 6. Eventually, as I got older, I felt TRAPPED (and resentful) in an endless obligation, as I realized I had no other identity or career options left. I had to continue leading and sacrificing all my time (mostly without pay) just to keep the interest and support from the other activists I admired. I’d been naive. I hadn’t realized they were never actual “personal friends;” they were simply attracted to the issues and whatever excitement my leadership generated from time to time. I was useful to them, but only while I remained active … so I had to stay active, no matter what. Thirteen years ago, cancer forced me to stop. I slowed down and mistakenly helped a manipulative and stealthy egomaniac stage a hostile coup that immediately neutered and ruined the group. I had to back away, it was so disgusting. I haven’t heard from any of my former “friends” since. I’ve tried getting physically active in other local causes a few times, because I still feel many of my old motivations … but the prior 30 years of near-constant pressure and stress, and the shock of how it ended left me with a kind of “social PTSD.” I can’t bear the thought of seeing anyone I used to know, so I rarely leave my house now. BTW, “Hell” and other religious notions never motivated me. Most of the theories here don’t seem related to the factors that always kept pushing me to “do good.”

In my long experience, most conscientious volunteers INITIALLY only become (and remain) environmental activists if they are truly WORRIED about what they PERSONALLY stand to lose if they don’t get involved. They fear losing clean air, clean water, safe food, healthy families, healthy wildlife, beautiful scenery, peace & quiet, or the natural resource base that they personally need for their livelihood (occupation) and future income (money). And they only STAY active if they can keep feeling good about their activism. They have to see at least some positive results from their participation … the sooner the better. If it takes weeks or months, or feels too difficult, some people give up … even when their heartfelt cause is “winnable.” They lack faith in their group or their own ability to make a difference. Also, most activist egos must be fed well and regularly. People must feel truly appreciated and have their contributions publicly acknowledged. Many seem to need the idea that to they’re special and UNIQUELY fill a valuable leadership niche in their community or organization. I think that’s why the most effective and nimble community activist organizations (all volunteer) are led by only a small cluster of compatible leaders … each of whom does something they know is unique and essential for the group’s success. When some volunteers lose this sense of personal leadership value, they disappear completely. They can’t bear to serve for long as nothing more than unacknowledged generic worker bees. There has to be SOMETHING personally gratifying about donating their time to a cause. This is why it’s also essential to include a lot of social activities on the side, to build independent, long-lasting and socially-fulfilling “communities” within groups … to help SUSTAIN long-term activism.

1. don't destroy the future for the present. 2. know yourself, know others... 3. remember the past. 4. if it hurts too much, laugh it off, if you can. 5. stay focused on the details - its in the details, where things matter the most. 6. everyone has a role to play - so play it well, or lose the role. 7. truth has value, lies do not. 8. all rules must have exceptions. 9. life is too short, get your act together, fast. 10. everything in life is a risk to reward profile. something like that.

Agreeableness 5 Extraversion 93 Conscientiousness 0 Openness 75 Neuroticism 99 I have three master's degrees Accounting, finance and an MBA, I'm also a certified public accountant. I'm the CFO of mid size company with two start ups on the side. Perhaps I looked at it from a totally different or wrong perspective. Because what he sees as, *Rules/structure, I see boundaries *Disciplined, I consider controlled *Norms and rules, I see limitations, and the lack of creativity/imagination. Critical in problem solving. I absolutely despise people that don't keep a promise or lie. Which is exactly the opposite of my results and I'm big on helping people in real need. Neuroticism and extraversion may be a matter of the one offsetting the other. Otherwise I have a very, very skew perspective of the world. That, or I did not read the assignment . I always wondered if I am using the same vocabulary as everyone else. Apparently not.
