What Makes Kykkos Monastery So FAMOUS?

The Kykkos Monastery is one of Cyprus’s most famous and wealthiest monasteries. It features a chapel at 1500 meters altitude, while the monastery itself is below the mountain.
For 800 years, a wooden Throne of the Mother of God stood at the summit, where monks placed the Kykkos Icon of the Virgin Mary during droughts to pray for rain.
Legend says that in the 11th century, a hermit named Isaiah lived in a cave on Mount Kykkos. A Roman governor, lost in the forest, asked Isaiah for directions. Isaiah remained silent, and the governor struck him. The governor later fell ill and sought Isaiah’s forgiveness. God healed him, and the governor went to Isaiah.
God instructed Isaiah to ask the governor for the Virgin Mary icon from Constantinople, painted by the Apostle Luke. Initially reluctant, the governor eventually traveled to Constantinople. After the emperor’s daughter fell ill, the emperor sent the icon to Cyprus, and the Kykkos Monastery was established.
In the 16th century, the face of the Mother of God was covered out of respect. The monks only uncover it during droughts, carrying the icon to the summit for prayer, with the face turned towards the sky.
The Kykkos Monastery combines Byzantine and local Cypriot architecture. Despite burning down several times, it has always been restored, preserving its sacred icon of the Virgin Mary
