Fun fact about the ghost ranking! Portrait rank for ghosts is actually dependent on the pearls themselves, not the health drain per go! While it’s true that you need to drain a portrait ghost down to about 10-15 health to get the big pearl, and thus the gold portrait ranking; if you were to catch the ghost in one go, but completely avoid picking up the pearls, the game will recognize that as a poor quality capture, and give you the bronze rank instead. This fact does not apply to the area bosses, as they 1: do not drop pearls, and 2: their rank is factored not only on how many goes it takes for you to defeat them, but also how much health you lose while fighting them!

Speaking as someone who HAD played Mario platformers as far back as the NES era, I really loved this game on launch. When I saw the critical consensus at the time, I was surprised to say the least. I had no expectation that a Luigi game would be exactly like a Mario game; in fact, one of the things I liked the most about it was that it had its own identity.
@NintendoTherapyPodcast2 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember critical consensus being negative on the game. I think it was consumers. My memory is reviews just docking at some points for being a short game but fun overall. In fact if you look at the reviews at the time most were 4/5 or 8/10. And the lowest I’ve seen are two publications going 7/10. So critically it’s reception is pretty favorable for a launch title.

I loved the game as a kid and I still do, but I’m kinda sad what they’ve done with the sequels. I haven’t played the second one but am currently playing the third. It’s a good game but it just doesn’t have the same feel. It’s way more casual and not as dark and atmospheric as the first one.
@moonbeam84064 жыл бұрын
I never played the original unfortunately, but it's 2 sequels Dark Moon and Luigi's Mansion 3 I have played, and just the atmosphere of being creepy yet charming still applies in both of them. Every time I play one of them, they never fail to give me a sense of accomplishment, whether from beating a boss, clearing a room and finally being able to see what's behind the next door, or even just finding all the gems. And I will admit, Luigi saving Mario at the end of the game is likely one of the most heartwarming scenes within the Mario series, but that's just my opinion. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna boot up my switch and play some Luigi's Mansion 3.

Moved straight onto Wind Waker afterwards and Paper Mario ttyd after that. Often times people say that nostalgia is what makes me value them so highly, but I’m not sure anymore. 20 years later and I’m finding people of vastly different ages still value this era of Nintendo. Am I just nostalgia blinded or were these games actually quality?

Awesome video! LM is my favorite game of all time and your points to what makes it great are spot on. On a side-note I’ve had a far-fetched but plausible theory ever since I played Majora’s Mask for the first time in 2015. You mentioned the mysterious circumstances that caused all the portrait ghosts to die at the same time and my theory is that the mansion is the resting place of everyone who died in a timeline where the moon destroyed Termina. Almost every portrait ghost has a strikingly similar character in MM, a few are the Clockwork Soldiers and the Clocktown Guards, Chauncey and the Goron Elder’s Son, Shivers and the Deku Butler, and Honey and Darling and the Dancing Whirlindas. Some other connections is the music room having the Deku Pipes which is one of the instruments Link plays. It also has the drums and a cello which are similar to the other instruments link plays. Probably the most striking reference is Luigi blowing up the moon. This always seemed so out of place, but it fits so well as a nod to MM. Overall, it’s unlikely that this is the canon story, but I wouldn’t be surprised if devs purposely made close ties considering how close the games were released from each other

I wouldn't say it's a likely theory obviously, but at bare minimum the correlation is kinda neat.

@Oceane18038 ай бұрын
Here's my theory about E. Gadd. He isn't good or evil, he's a morally grey character who's only focus is his research. He says that the Boos are the ones who trapped Mario, but the Boos were all trapped under a trap door, including King Boo, until Luigi accidently frees them. That means the Boos were trapped before Luigi arrived, and were therefore unable to trap Mario in that painting themselves, even if they take credit for it, and King Boo only gets a hold of Mario's painting later. They couldn't send Luigi the letter saying he won the mansion either. But guess who can turn things into paintings, send the letter and do all that ? That's right. E. Gadd. Also, the Boos were trapped within the Portrait Ghosts' mansion, which does imply they are good guys since they're the ones keeping the dangerous Boos trapped. And most of them are just living their lives until we try to catch them. So here's what I think happened : A while ago, E. Gadd caught the Portrait Ghosts, but lately, they managed to escape. They made their mansion reappear, in which King Boo and 50 Boos have been trapped by them before, and they started living their lives again. E. Gadd, wants to recapture them. But he's too old to do it again, so he sends that letter to Luigi in order to trick him into catching the Portrait Ghosts for him. He did not call Mario because Luigi is more naive, and would believe him more easily. Also, since King Boo says Mario caused trouble for him in the past, maybe that Mario is the one who trapped King Boo within the mansion, with the Portrait Ghosts' help (before E. Gadd caught them). So if E. Gadd called him, well it wouldn't work since Mario knows that the Portrait Ghosts aren't evil, and Mario would refuse to help. So E. Gadd sends the "You won a mansion" letter to Luigi instead. The problem is, Mario recognizes the Mansion in which he trapped King Boo in the past, and feeling like it may be a trap, goes there before Luigi. There, he meets E. Gadd, who knowing Mario would get in the way of his plans (and refuses to help him catch the ghosts), pushes him into his machine to turn things into portraits, and decides to use Mario as the excuse to send Luigi catch the ghosts for him when he eventually arrives. But after being freed, King Boo gets his hands on Mario's portrait which E. Gadd left in the mansion. And we can also see that his morality is grey in Sunshine, where he gives the paintbrush to Bowser Jr. and F.L.U.D.D. to the Piantas, basically creating a problem and its solution to test both of his inventions and see how things will turn out to satiate his scientific curiosity. He also does many good things, but he doesn't care whether what he does is good or bad as long as he can test his experiments and his inventions. I find that fascinating. E. Gadd is probably the most morally complex character of all the mainline Mario games. It's true that Nintendo doesn't exactly use that potential though, but that's true for basically all the Mario characters sadly.

Despite how much I love the haunted house atmosphere and ghost design, there is just something that really bothers me about the whole series. Most of the ghosts don't seem to be aggressive until they're provoked, many of them are just doing their own thing with some just straight up minding their own business (i.e. the ghost catching up on some reason, the pianist, the sleeping little girl, the director, etc.) so why are you busting them!? It makes it seem like Luigi is the aggressor. You can count the number of hostile ghosts in the series on two hands, yet the dozens of others react to the player the same way you would act if you came across a toad in your garden. Hell, even the Boos ain't attacking you, and are actively trying to get away from you. I doubt to many people would like the fate of being stuck in a picture for all eternity, and the HUGE issue of Gadd using the ghosts as slaves in the sequel makes this game series downright questionable! Why is this aspect of the game never really brough up!? I'm probably overthinking this by miles, but I can't get around it! In the first game, Neville is literally just sitting there reading, not bothering the world or his wife! Why do you have to bust him!?! He's not bothering anyone, and the same goes for most of the other ghosts in this series!! It really reminds me of the Bigfoot hunting mission in RDR Undead Nightmare.

@@DuoStuff okay! Just curious as I am just finding your channel and didn't know if it was made and taken down or something like that

This is my favorite game in the franchise. I really dislike how they went to a more comedic way with this game. Also the long un-skippable cutscenes is really frustrating.

I'm not sure people really need to be warned about it, but hey, it couldn't hurt I guess.

Simply put... the only thing that makes Luigis Mansion special is Luigi

I don't think it's the *ONLY* thing that makes it special, but I think my almost 30 minute video kinda speaks for itself. XD

I actually do have one. Usually Troy Sideways posts the link in the comments on every video.

How many kids were afraid of Mr.Cu**? OOPS I mean Mr.Luggs! He was the reason I was too hesitant to play this game as a child! How many of you guys in the comments have had this fear of Mr.Luggs?

I'm not sure if there are many others or not. All I know is that he scared the shit out of my friend MJ and I. XD

DuoStuff Well he sure as Hell made me not want to play that game despite owning it for two years. I was born in 2002. I got the game for my 10th Birthday but I wasn’t able to get the nerve out to play the game until after I turned 12.

I mean I think most people would disagree considering that's the most praised part of the game nowadays, but opinions are opinions. I'm more of a Twilight Princess guy myself style-wise.

@DuoStuff I know, I simply think it realy don't look good. I don't mind a more cartoony "childish: artstyle just this one rubs me the wrong way. Yeah Tp I also like more personally.
