Mr Beer is an absolute dream in this inquiry, so clear and clever and knowledgeable. The whole team must have worked incredibly hard to have read and understood the vast amount of data. What a fantastic role model Mr Beer is.

Dr. Duckett, I completely concur with your comments about Mr Beer. Speaking as someone who saw the idiots of Post Office Ltd in action, when they tried to pursue my father using both Capture and Horizon data, it is really good to witness them being held to account by all Inquiry team, however Mr Beer stands head and shoulders above the others with his use timing, comedy, sideway looks and thinly veiled put downs. I have missed his presence in phase 7. He has made me laugh out loud on many occasions and I wish him well with whatever he goes on to do. I just hope I never get myself into a position where he is my adversary!

Mr Beer is superb and won Barrister of the Year at the Lawyer awards 2024, Silk of the Year in the inquiry section in 2023. Sir Wyn is also sharp as a tack. What would have been pure comedy and he may have been heading just before the fire alarm, would be hin getting through all the points, then asking if none of those points raised an alarm and for the alarm to then go off.

Paul, I believe you are spot on in your appraisal of the "magnificent Mr. Beer". He is clearly well aware of his deliberate use of comedy. He is neither daunted nor cowed by the position of his "targets". Senior lawyers, other KCs, Politicians, CEOs, Lords, Ladies & Knights of the Realm all fall beneath his withering gaze. He is ruthless when necessary yet gentle at times (but never condescending unless it's "Our Tim" or Messers Singh & Williams who all deserved it!). This was an excellent summing up of the absolute star of this whole deplorable situation! Well done!

Raising a glass to Mr Beer, as I type. Love his humour and use of it - and yes humour IS an effective tool. Last century, as part of this one's final exams as an Applied Psychologist undergrad., I got permission to write a thesis entitled, 'Psychotherapy and Humour', the main argument discussed being that with a receptive client, a therapist could encompass a situation in making the client completely accepting that they had put themselves in the emotional shoes said client was wearing, i.e. empathised, with a humorous quip or remark, that would be as equally effective or more for the client in resolving their issue/s, rather than a further two or three hour-long counselling sessions in exploration and groundwork. A favourite line of Mr Beer's was after Elaine Cottam's car crash of an appearance, when he asked Uncle Wyn for a fifteen minute break so that 'all could reorientate themselves in time and place'.

Jason Beer has many attributes. The main one is that he is human. Another is that he is intelligent. His most useful one is that he is a team player. His questions are not random. They are planned by both him and a team. They plan a series of subjects and various trajectories within. The questions are then framed and the possible answers anticipated. Layered on the top is his personality. Add this lot together and add some quick thinking and we have Jason Beer KC.

Like the orchestration of a standup comedian mr Beer delivers a concise statement of the facts leading to the conclusion in a memorable punchline, in doing so he builds a storyline retaining the focus of the audience in anticipation the punchline conclusion…the ‘coup de grace’. The skill is in the delivery, the consequences of the decisions made by these people under scrutiny are no light matter so mr Beer doesn’t gloat or showboat but just calmly let’s this punchline sink in, so when the laughter subsides we’re still left with the gravity of the conclusion, like a good barrister should. Didn’t mr Beer receive an award from his peers for his accomplishments? Thank you Dr Paul for another intriguing episode, love your work😊Dean.

In November 2023, Mr Singh was not interrupting Mr Beer solely from rudeness or prematureness, but it was a big part of his tactic to try to convert the whole interview into a cosy chat between fellow professionals, or play for time by prattling on for ages, lose the place, then ask for the question again (think we had all forgotten tbh) - stomach churning to watch. Singh was not so cocky at his second interview in early 2024.

Hi Paul, Excellent video and analysis, I agree with you …yes Mr Jason Beer has been quite magnificent during this Inquiry. As for the “comedy” aspect, I think he asked his questions in a way to expose the witness by showing how ridiculous some of their evidence was, either by written Witness Statement or with their face-to-face answers. This style of questioning left no doubt to everyone listening that their answers were not fooling anyone and most importantly being noted by Sir Wyn Williams.

Julian [the bonehead] can be patient but his aloofness can be patronising. In contrast, Jason remains dignified and respectful. His entry at Essex chambers says the following "Smooth, cerebral and reliable, with impeccable judgement. He is unbeatable on the law and very good in appellate cases and in public law". Aside from his rhetorical skills I find his mastery of detail quite amazing. Notice how Jason talks with his eyes - he addresses his subjects forcefully with his gaze. Part two, having watched up to the end of 'Fools Gladly'. I agree with most of what you say, but the missing element again from your assertions around Singh is that Beer was asking 'all the right questions' to the wrong person. We know that on the very few occasions Singh actually typed anything in an email it was incomprehensible, rambling and mostly gibberish (6 examples are known) but Beer showed us and the inquiry neat and very clear emails, emails COMPOSED and TYPED by Marilyn Benjamin, she acted as translator and by accident executioner of Singh. If you go to the full transcripts site for the Inquiry you can find out a bit about Marilyn Benjamin and how she was given the task to basically keep Singh out of the way whilst the grown ups (and the less scatter-brained) dictated to Marilyn what he then signed as being his. Beer railroaded a dupe, a sad and foolish man who was ridiculed at work and now in the inquiry. Please read all about that in the transcripts... it's all there.

Thank you Dr Duckett, a tremendous analysis of both sides of the legal coin here. On the one side the inquiry, and particularly Jason Beer , showed calm and knowledgeable professionalism, which is certainly credible, but on the other a distinctly different display how the extremely dark side of the same profession can, will and is operating. No wonder we now have the impression that the rule of law is being undermined by such people employing legal dishonesty and process mixed with word salad nonsense. Such a concern arising out of this very inquiry. No wonder there are now unanswered judiciary prejudicial questions and that even determining instructions from the bench are, rightly it seems, being questioned by people as well as top politicians. The POL debacle was about a protected species knowingly criminalising the unprotected. The originator of the phrase “two-tier” and other, to date, miscarriages of justice where someone was convicted and now serving a life sentence on the faux basis of “expert” witness.

Part one, having listened to the first 25mins The phrase is a legal nicety set out for Coroners, it's from 2013. Rodric ruined Beers favourite tactic, railroading. He took away Beers control of the 'screen' and that killed Beer at every turn. RW took from Beer other weapons too. Beer's desire to get a precise answer to a question that cannot elicit such a thing. Asking when an attitude came about is impossible, RW explained that to Beer... in your extract. Singh was a rabbit caught in the headlights... Beer was able to railroad him in the most egregious fashion, Singh deserved it all though but in a Court of Law Beer would be torn to shreds for leading almost all of the witnesses, most especially Singh. But Singh was computer illiterate and the person that should have been there, in part, instead of Singh was his secretary. Who was the only person who could open his computer and emails. Did you miss her name? In case you missed it her name is Marilyn Benjamin, Beer was afraid to call her to the stand because it would largely absolve Singh if she spoke up. The absence of the person who had the ONLY code to open Singhs computer and who edited his his rambling nonsense before putting it in an Email was Marilyn... to NOT have a word from her damaged Beer's credibility for me.

Agreed he was magnificent to observe. He was able to highlight their ridiculous arrogance. I think they were expecting an easier ride from someone familiar with the worlds they mostly inhabit. So wonderful to observe integrity from Mr Beer and someone actually just doing their job. Unlike the interviewees whose job seemed to be persecuting the innocent and feigning ignorance and memory losses and bemoaning how hard it was for them to be part of this enquiry. Such arrogant disregard and lack of morality and ethics. I’m horrified when I hear Venells BS and self pitying tears. She was paid handsomely to do precisely nothing judging by her very lengthy (they never told me anything) witness statement. They presided over a monstrous miscarriage of justice resulting in unimaginable pain and they say how hard it is for THEM, like they had nothing to do with it.

Mr Beer is up there with the likes of MrJustice Fraser. Hopefully, a judicial appointment is heading Mr Beer's way in the near future. But when you look at the likes of Alice Perkins, Tim Parker, Paula Vennells, Nick Read et al, there is something rotten in the appointments system.

Much as I agree that Mr Beer's questioning is excellent. I am concerned as to why this process and specific areas and individuals are not connected into people or information in the finance team over the decades. On the one hand the finance people knew about the claimed Horizon shortfalls, but also had the suspense accounts and then the huge expenditure on the lawyers. The inquiry should open a disclosure on reward system for more junior POL staff/contractors to come forward with snippets on where to look, who to look at. Presently the management, lawyers, etc have presented a disgusting wall of lies and obfuscation. Finally, given as this inquiry is lifting the lid on how the civil service operates, how it was centrally influenced by senior politicians such as Tony Blair, how parliament was repeatedly deceived, it should be overseen by people appointed on behalf of the crown, instead of a judge who is controlled by the government. They all need to be held accountable, the current 'club' will never do that.

Part three having watched up to your summation, but not the summation itself. In Jan 2003 I was Chief Engineer of a Company turning over more than £150million (small in comparison to the PO) sadly my MD developed cancer and out of the blue I was handed the reins for a few weeks... that actually lasted for 19mths. The Company was a few days into an expansion and takeover schedule lasting 2yrs, which resulted in the turnover becoming almost £500 million. Still 'small' compared to the PO. Although differing in many ways Vennells was in a similar position, the PO was being primed for a takeover of sorts that we call restructuring. I was lucky, around me were experts, countless numbers of them too, and I set them tasks and they reported back to me only what was going to sink the ship (in my case, if we leveraged too much, too soon or spent too much too soon) I guarantee that had something that was not going to derail the change had been sent to me at that time, I'd have shot it across to the head of 'this or that' dept. and would not trouble my mind with it. My job was to not sink the ship, that's all... I had to hand it back to Ken in as good a shape as I could. Vennells, vile as she is, likely started that way... but there is one HUGE difference, I had little time and a lot to do, she had a lot of time and some of those 18 points MUST, absolutely MUST have got through if she was competent as it was a compound problem, a compound reputational problem, some of that list is a pure lie, just where that starts I don't know... but it should have been by 2008 in my opinion. She bears a huge part of the responsibility... simply for being 'asleep at the wheel' for a VERY long time... and that's if you believe her, but Van Bogert sank her ship on that front didn't she!

Mr Beer had kid gloves on as main lawyer in the inquiry (the other lawyers on behalf of clients were often not so polite) - would love to see him in a real court case. You're so vicious lol

Hopefully, when this inquiry leads to a court of law with legal action against those responsible for the unjust prosecutions of so many sub postmasters, based on the deeply flawed Horizon system, Jason Beer could really go to town.
