Counsel to the inquiry Jason Beer KC accused Paula Vennells of adopting an "odd" approach before speaking to MPs.
In 2015, she told MPs on the the business select committee that she had seen no evidence of miscarriages of justice and that there were no faults in the Horizon system.
On Wednesday, the inquiry was told of an email Ms Vennells sent before the select committee hearing saying she needed to tell MPs "it is not possible" to access Horizon remotely. Counsel to the inquiry Jason Beer KC asked why she needed to say remote access was not possible.
Ms Vennells responded:"I phrased this point very specifically and I can remember why I did this.
"Alice Perkins, not related to this particularly, but I can remember Alice Perkins saying to me at some stage, 'Paula if you want to get the truth and a really clear answer from somebody, you should tell them what it is you want to say very clearly and then ask for the information that backs that up', that was why I phrased this that way."
Mr Beer said:"That's an odd way of going about things, isn't it? 'I want to know the answer to the question, here's the answer to the question, tell me I'm wrong'."
Ms Vennells added: "Well yes, I hoped they would do....I believed this was absolutely the case, I had an obligation going before the select committee to be able to share the information that I knew and be able to answer their questions correctly and this is what I was trying to ask for from the team. I was not in any way, if you're suggesting this, trying to tell them what the answer should be."

Being stripped of her pension and any salary she has, has nothing to do with the justice system. This enquiry will hopefully find out what happened and report on it, making recommendations on the way. The DPP may then make a decision on what charges are appropriate if any. With regards to her pensions and salary, that's up to her employeers at any given time. As she's now retired her pensions are probably secure.

This is classic management speak. She was telling her staff what she wanted to say, and telling them that they should support her. She was not inviting them to tell her why that was not true. Therefore her team told her what she wanted to hear, true or not. Now she says she was 'too trusting', but she didn't ask for the truth, she asked for the 'right' answer. Management speak for group lies.

Don't think that Vennells is unique amongst CEO's- because she almost certainly isn't. MBA and business courses need to make ethics and understanding these disasters core parts of their qualifications. Sending some of them to prison won't hurt either.

I would love to see that happen. But it wont. The inquiry has ensured that any lawyer can argue that a fair trial is impossible. They should have been investigated before the inquiry.
@TheDevilWAH
@TheDevilWAH 27 күн бұрын
Plenty of criminal procutions and convictions have in the past come based on the out come of an inquiry. the out come of an inquiry can indeed be used in a criminal case as evidence of guilt. As long as the inquiry is carried out in line with the UK lawas and regulations a lawyer can not use it as "unfair". They can of course use the outcome of the inquiry in their evidence. So if you wanted to charge PV and the inquiry found the PO did no wrong that would hurt your case. But as the inquiry is in the public domian both sides have equal opportunity to use it in their case, so the argument that a defence lawyer saying "the trial is unfair becuase the inquiry" would be "well recall the witness from the inquiry and the evidence you think was incorrect and unfair and demonstrate how it was wrong", Or simply "yes your honor we are aware that the jury may have a knowlage of the inquiry therefore we will be using that as part of our evidence, so prior knowlage is not going to impact the case.." Witness in an inquiry are not supose to self incriminate, but being part of an inquiry in no way can protect you in a court of law. Unfortunaly lieing to a public inquiry is not criminal. neither is bring so rubbish at your job you didnt investigate the issues that lead to 900 PM getting convicted. A criminal court would have to prove the intentions behind the cover up. And PV could easly say "i didn know how to do my job correctly and messed up" rather than "I lied to the courts and gave false evidence to the proscutors to makes sure the PM's went down. one gets you a slpped wrist and one a criminal recourd and time in jail. it very hard to prove one or the other in a criminal court. This is why it is unlikley to be any proscutions. not to do with "fair trials" simply the lack of evidence in to the motivation behind what they did. We all i think have a good idea, but proving it will be hard. I hope they do though.

When the Tories decided to break up The Post Office into its various sectors and sell it off into BT, Royal Mail, Parcelforce, and Post Office Counters being the main businesses, (ooo where have we seen that before), Counters was the biggest loss maker because it was an agency for other sectors of government ( TV licensing, selling stamps for Royal Mail and Parcels services, National Savings, banking etc., ) and the only product it owned being Postal Orders. Therefore the top management and government brought in other supposed competent corporate managers to turn its fortunes around, but unfortunately they did not have a clue about the business or how to deal with it. They were so clueless re the computer systems being developed.........just like many other government iT contracts, e.g NHS, Test and Trace, Nuclear Submarines.......😮😡

I attend my CofE parish church weekly where the vicar mentions the word 'diversity' in every sermon. CofE is in end-stage collapse with choirs being shut down and gimmicks to raise funds. Horrifying and comical at the same time.
@smolcharlie1736
@smolcharlie1736 27 күн бұрын
You think the CofE is collapsing because of diversity rather than people's distrust of the church? You don't think it has anything to do with cronyism, corruption, financial and sexual scandals, and the general swing towards secularism and away from superstition?
@Ken_oh545
@Ken_oh545 27 күн бұрын
@@smolcharlie1736that is quite a leap of logic! No, I think it has lost direction and now presents a mixed message. There is no superstition in the Book of Common Prayer, it was a solid document which everybody knew. It had obscure and profound language which one learned over time, now the CofE language is all 'easy access' ie banal in the extreme. We have less formal liturgy with priests who ad lib constantly, wristband-wearing vicars, and dilution everywhere eg shortened Psalms. All symptomatic of an organisation which has lost self-confidence. The Anglican Communion, riven by tension over women bishops and gay marriage, does not amount to much any more either. To return to the comical aspect - once upon a time the CofE was known as the Tory Party at prayer, not so much these days.

In this document she said she was "told" that it is possible to access the system remotely but she then asked, and therefore pressured, her subordinates to to tell her it was impossible so she could relay that to the Select Committee. In doing this she hid from the Select Committee the fact that she had been told it was possible. This was the device she used to lie whilst pretending to be honest and transparent.
