What was the goal? Did they achieve it? Was it worth it? The first two questions is what we can more or less objectively judge in an art piece. But the last question is what makes this a little bit tricky and forces us to call art subjective. Who's to say what's worth it and what's not?

Great essay, really liked the pacing, structure, and music choice. If the goal was to get me thinking more about expression and meaning then I'd say you achieved that and it was definitely worth it. But, is it art? Did it make me feel something or focus on an experience / build empathy? Harder to say. The video has elements of creative art, performance art as well as craftsmanship. Like design though, it seems to have a practical purpose to educate or stimulate discussion. If someone asked me what this video was my first thought wouldn't be "art". Maybe it's like, "also art" or "art, as well". Good question. Keep making more!

@@REOsama The presentation in general is at least good. The pacing as in the 'flow' was great (the way it goes from one thought to the next). Maybe the speed was a bit fast but it does not take merit from the whole of the presentation.

Almost exactly my thoughts, neatly put in one short video. I have one addition thought - I belive art can either make you feel or think. Best of art can make you do both. It seems to me there is two types of beauty - the beauty of feeling and beauty of idea. The first one is picture with beutiful landscape, relaxing piano music or romantic novel. The other one is like plot twist in book (especially in detectives), game strategy (especially ideas people use in speedruns), engeenering trick(like those who make seemingly difficult tasks easy), bizzare science concept (especially those things in advanced physics and math). It might be fall into "design" category but I'm don't feel like it's right words for this things.

Interesting video. And about your last question. Your video had purpose: to answer the question. It was expression of your creative skill and it made as feel interest and curiosity, so it is art. And actually, it had a goal, it achieved it, and it was worth it.

I’ve been trying to form my own philosophy on what is art and this helped a lot. As an artist I always felt a little insulted when people told me that everything is art. It made it sound like the thing in witch I invested most of my skill and effort was cheap, and threatened my status as an artist, when applying the logic that if everything was art then everyone was an artist. This video really helped me put things into perspective and better understand myself as an artist.

In my opinion, something is considered art if a large group of people recognizes it as such. Photography wasn’t considered an art form when it first appeared. If there hadn’t been a group of people promoting it as a form of art, we might not consider photography as an art even today. Therefore, art is neither objective nor subjective, but rather intersubjective.

When the artist says it is art, - it is art...as it is impossible to prove it isn’t. Art is a way of communication where the artist uses the piece of art to express ideas, visions and feelings. The value of the piece of art is something else, based on its ability to make an impression by communication that we feel meaningful. This again is highly personal. What that is important to me can be meaningless to you.

The solution is to say that (low) art is everywhere in almost all we do as humans but high art, masterpieces are very rare. Somebody thinking the message is most important sees esthetical baffling beauty not as high art but others might.

In over 30 years of musing, mulling, digesting, ruminating, and otherwise philosophizing on the subject, I have come to a conclusion. For the first 10-ish years I could not settle on a satisfactory definition. Around 2002-2005 I finally distilled the answer I was looking for during my time at College for Creative Studies: Anything that human beings do that does not DIRECTLY facilitate survival or reproduction, is art. That is an answer I continue to poke, muse, mull, digest, and ruminate upon that has so far more or less stuck for 20 years (for me--YMMV).
@swagnusmcduck7566 Жыл бұрын
This makes me think of that ol’ idea; What art would you make, if you knew that NO ONE besides yourself, would ever see it? If you wouldn’t make art at all, then perhaps art has a survival function, in that it helps bonding with other humans, which has historically been beneficial for survival. If you did create something, was it perhaps a subconscious attempt at creating something to replace the companionship? Both options are tied to survival.

Amazing video, I was wondering if you think honesty has any role in how good art is, I know that’s subjective but in my experience art that pretends to be something it’s not tends to be less appealing, like when a paintings uses gimmicky techniques in an effort to make it more appealing to the viewer
@MessmersMusings4 жыл бұрын
I agree. Maybe that fits into the "make you feel something" category. Maybe you could consider it a lesser form of art, because - by avoiding honest expression - does a poorer job at communicating emotion/humanity.

Wow! Nice video. Although I must say that I don't find those 3 questions to define "objectively good" art as valid. Why? Well, because the third question, "Was it worth it?", is just as subjective as "Is this piece of art good?". It doesn't really resolve the conundrum at all. Although maybe I should say that, in the last few years, I've grown a bit cynical with the topic of what makes art good, since the more I dig into it, the more appears to me that it's in the end just a form of social dominance struggle. A battlefield where people just try to put their personal taste over everyone else's. (This line of thought is still a work in progress, so don't pay too much mind to it. It's just an idea I struggle with).
@MessmersMusings6 жыл бұрын
Although art may sometimes be a manifestation of an artist/culture struggling for social dominance, I think art is much more often used as a tool for community than it is as a weapon in some sort of post-modern/marxist culture war.

How many people on this thread think "A.I art" constitutes as art? And I don't mean in the "noun" sence like a.i "painting" or a.i "song" I mean is it genuine"art"?
@capuchinosofia47714 жыл бұрын
The problem is also that not everyone feels the same. For example, Polloks´paintings make me feel something. for me they are not art. Can someone make art without the intent of conveing feelings? Is that what separates a simple drawing from art? Great video. If im remembering properly, plato/aristoteles (i dont remember which!) basically defined art as craft. The definition changed since. Thats the thing about art, its definition changes on the type of art. The definition for abstract art (pollok) is not the same for realist art, nor expressionism.

Great video. One question. Does art have to be finished? Can art exist from conception to completion? Or does it only exist in completion?
@MessmersMusings6 жыл бұрын
I think most people would agree with the sentiment that art is never truly finished, only abandoned. I suppose each stage of the creative process could be considered/analysed as a unique work, and we could assess how well it achieves the goals of the artist at that specific stage. Eventually, the amount of time required to incrementally move towards the artist's goal will increase exponentially, and at that point the cost of continuing outweighs the benefits of those incremental improvements and so it is abandoned or 'finished'.
