I enjoy both. But if someone is higher skilled grappler. It's better off learning how to sprawl and counter the takedown. I seen strikers that struggled ground work and I seen grapplers that are not great with their hands. Learning both and adding in the skill does help. One of my buddy is a coach for his MMA national team in Asia. He has the best strikers on his team but they work heavily on counter takedown and defense groundwork.

Unless you have one shot KO power, or you have enough years of experience to understand how to control distance, you have to know how to wrestle to be "street ready." Even if you have those striking prerequisites I mentioned, all it takes is someone to reach out and push you to unbalance you, compromise your base and turn a striking exchange into a wrestling exchange. There's a reason wrestling is so important in MMA.

When I started doing martial arts I trained in Muay Thai for almost 8 years before transitioning over to BJJ. Hell at one point I was doing both at the same time but had to choose one due to time constraints. Learning both striking and grappling is the best way to go if you're doing martial arts for self defense
@chamsseddin44492 ай бұрын
almost all the points you made could be said about grappling in another way, multiple opponents vs only one, your chance against bigger opponents, weapons, finishing the fight through a KO, physical and mental toughness, managing distance, well, understanding the situation you're in is essential as a self-defense principle not just as a striking principle, so you see how many opponents are against you and how big they're and whether they have weapons or not is essential, and if you're good at grappling you should have a good chances against bigger opponents just as striking is because if your opponent is so big that you prefer striking and avoid grappling then just run and this is basic for self-defense as i said, and you get mentally and physically tough with grappling too, plus the chance of finishing your opponent through a submission or a g&p is even better than betting on a KO, so according to what you're saying, just focus on self-defense which mean avoiding fighting as much as possible (if you're avoiding getting to the ground, because most fights go to the ground), then all your arguments about striking are just meaningless, if you're in a fight grappling provides the greater control thus it have the upper hand, and of course both is even better, but in terms of priority, grappling should be the way to go, here we're talking about fights in general, if you're more into self-defense and avoiding fights as much as possible, then you have get it, just avoid fight, because if you're in a fight you're getting to the ground, that's just the way it is.

@shalevsaada75967 ай бұрын
I highly disagree. To know how to stay in your feet you need to know how to grapple and defend your self from being tossed on the ground. Being a good striker can be really helpful in a street fight but if you dont know what to do if the guy come and grapple you than all your striking skill are useless
@BuildingPhysiques7 ай бұрын
That’s true! However, that does depend as well. I have been in situations (sparring) where the guy would go for a takedown and would fail just because of my strength. It does greatly help tho to be able to defend against it.
