===I love knives. So, when people started asking us to do knife reviews, I thought this would be fun. I'm not big on wasting a weekly video just reviewing a single knife and just regurgitating the marketing points that the knife company sends in the box. Rather, I'd prefer to see some "head-to-head" discussion. That brought us to reaching out to a bunch of knife companies, asking them to send us their "best" knife in three categories:
Best EDC Folding Knife
Best EDC Fixed-blade Knife
Best Fixed Blade Field Knife
Many companies never responded back to our email. Others seemed interested but never came through. So, before you bitch that we didn't test "YOUR" favorite knife; remember that these knives were sent from companies to represent them. Not everyone wanted to be involved with this test. Maybe that will change next year.
The Test: This video covers entries for the Best EDC Folding knife. While I love knives and train with them; I deferred to Randy "Rawhide" Wurst and Imri Morgenstern, because both live and breath knives. Both teach knife fighting. Imri even makes knives professionally. They each took half of the entries, played with them for a week; swapped piles, and played with those for a week. Then, I brought them together and they brain stormed different ways to make each knife shine or fail.
The Knives listed by video order:
1. Kershaw - Launch 13- www.knifecente...
2. Off grid knives - cayman edc- www.offgridkni...
3. Cold steel - AB10- www.coldsteel....
4. Benchmade - Bugout- www.bladehq.co...
5. Opinel-www.opinel-usa...
6. Buck - Paradigm Assisted open - www.buckknives...
7. Smith and Wesson - M&P -www.bladehq.co...
8. Benchmade - Tengu Flipper - www.benchmade....
So, What did we find out?
First, it sucked that I wasn't included in this; because I would have loved to get a couple new knives.
Second, both Randy and Imri both CHANGED their initial opinion. Let that sink in: they both picked knives they liked, during initial viewing that they thought would win. However, after further testing, both changed their minds and fell in love with a different blade. Point is, don't just trust your eyes or the marketing flare... do your homework and test stuff out.
These are all great knives.
Some are better than others. A few are much better than others. Also, please note that Randy's opinion is different than Imri's, and will be different from your opinion. So, again, if we didn't pick your favorite knife or your company wasn't represented here; don't bitch too hard. I didn't have a say, but I'm the one answering the comments. Note that we were NOT paid a dime to lean in anyone's favor. Big thanks to Imri and Randy for running this test.
We'll have more great tests in the near future.
I hope you enjoyed the video. Strength & Honor, TR.

The cold steel triad lock (lock back) can be easily be closed and openend one handed if practiced, they designed most of their folders like that...most
@pateralus9
@pateralus9 Жыл бұрын
This is 100% true! With practice it becomes second nature, very easy. You just have to be careful if the back lock has a spring that tends to snap the blade closed once it's about midway. Especially with a good sharp knife. Yikes!
@redriver6541
@redriver6541 2 жыл бұрын
Cold Steel has the Triad lock.... It's the strongest lock in the game. The axis lock depends on a set of springs to work.... Their fidget friendly but that's a weak link in something you might have to depend on.
@matthewadler1329
@matthewadler1329 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, but omega springs are failing less and less. Brands have been hit with lots of complaints, and especially with the rights to the design being expired and all the new iterations across the market, better quality springs have taken the place of the old weak ones. Ganzo was installing heavier spring than Benchmade for years which is kinda funny. It's still never gonna be a triad lock, but crossbar locks are pretty strong. I'd trust em at least as much as a liner lock. Good point though
@pateralus9
@pateralus9 Жыл бұрын
Have you tried the Shark Lock yet on the AD20 or AD20.5? Andrew says it's even stronger than the Tri-ad lock, which is absolutely nuts! I had both the larger & smaller sizes of this model but I sold them both, like an idiot. I plan on getting a titanium AD20.5 at some point, or configuring one that way myself. I don't own a Cold Steel at the moment, but at some point hopefully soon I'd like to get one with a Tri-ad lock. I've heard the Ultimate Hunter is great because it's more comfortable in hand than some of the other models like the AD-10, with that pointy part at the hilt of the handle. I hardly do any heavy work though, so I admit I want it out of just that, wanting it & not needing it, haha. But what can I say? I love knives! :o)

I have carried a Benchmade literally every day in some variety for the last 10 years. I currently carry a 940, reverse tanto, S30V, partially serrated blade. It's been pretty good to me. Not too difficult to touch up, and I send it in every few years to be professionally sharpened by Benchmade (they offer their LifeSharp service for free, all you pay is shipping to their factory in Oregon). I served in the Navy for 10 years, and I used my knives pretty hard. I only saw the Axis lock fail on me once. An omega spring in the lock broke, so the locking pin did not go into place properly. I sent my knife to Benchmade, they fixed the lock, cleaned, resharpened it, and it came back good as new. I'm a little disappointed that they stopped offering most of their edc knives with a serration option, mostly it seems reserved for their tactical style blades now. The 940 is my favorite. It's slim, but has a sturdy, strong pointed blade with excellent cutting ability.

For me a self defense knife a fix blade 90% of the time pocket knives are back up blades or utility blades. Why when I carry a self defense I carry 1 of 5 fix blades.. Ban Tang Clinch Pick, Bradford Guardian3.5 Tanto, Colonel Blades LowVZ, Brous Blade MF-CEO, or the Bark River Ghost II. I will soon have a Survive! TSK Tanto which for me reminded me of the TOPS Rapid Strike. But when you go to a single knife of carry I move away from a fix blade. This also changed knives I would carry for EDC pocket knife. Where I would carry something like a Titanium knife Ray Laconico Jasmine, Chris Reeves Small Sebenza Insingo, ZT Sinkevich 0470, WE knives Decon, Quiet Carry Drift or Spyderco Spydiechef. Slick grips are a no no for self defense. Also I carry 3 knives normally a fix blade for Self defense. A traditional style knife simple use for non knife people aka slip joint or classic lock backs. Then my normal Utility Knife I carry. Also go gear knife like a Karahawk isn't carry in my EDC as I find most people see hawkbill blade the most aggressive. For me I suggest Drop point or Clip point knives. I love tantos for self defense but they look aggressive and while I work with people who carry knives in a office setting that are cool if you carry a Katana to work. But most people don't have that setting so I'm thinking of larger communities and state laws. I will Suggest these things 1. clip or drop point blades that don't look overly aggressive. 2. G-10 grips for secure grip 3. Solid lock system 4. Again autos and OTFs come off overly aggressive. 5. Blades I would suggest a round 3 inches in length but could be 4 inches can be seen as too aggressive in many places and illegal in many state. This means 3.5 is max I suggest but 3 inch knife means more state you can carry in. As for NY CA and other commie state of America well fuck them stay out of them. I'm going to suggest a few knives but not in a best to worst just knives I think work well in a Self Defense and Utility and I would use in a single blade EDC system. I agree with the adage that: the best knife for self defense is the knife you have. If it's too big or clunky chances are you will not carry it full time. My preference is a fixed 3" blade with a clip point, drop point or wharncliff profile. Either a good finger choil or front quillon and a flat grind as my edge geometry. Micarta handle due to its grippiness under wet conditions (blood) and an impact pommel. I prefer carbon steel over stainless. As such my two favorite knives are the Spyderco Ronin or the Esee 3.

Joe X proved S35VN steel (with the Recon 1's) is not good for hard use. It snaps. So did dealiest warrior. Lower rockwell stainless and carbon spring steels are better, especially if you are not using it often and only preserving it for defense, as you recommended. I also do not agree with your warncliff blade. I had a few of them and they are a very in-versatile design. You carry a tanto or specially re-inforced tips like Hindera does on a drop point or spear point blade. And amry man or no, your 'mame' philosophy in blade choice is flawed. Medievil knights had a saying that holds ture today, "do not pull it unless you intend to use it".

Most likely no submissions were sent. My daily carry is SpiderCo's Mantix 2 G-10 version. It fits my hand perfectly, I really like the locking mechanism, and it won't fail. An excellent all-around daily carry knife which is made in America.

Most of your knives are too expensive. And that's the case with USA made knives. Are they made better? To some degree,but not always. The cheap knives made in China are getting too good lately. Alot of the budget knives are now made with D2 and 14c28n Sandvik steel which are really good in performance. The higher end knives are using M390,S35vn,and S90v steel just like the USA made higher end knives. So the bag for your buck lies in these budget Chinese made knife brands. For heavier duty use, most companies have a few over built knives to offer. Although many knife enthusiast seem to like the lighter knives under 3.5" inch blades and under 4.5 ounces. Also, mainly tactical or self defense knives aren't as popular either. And I've found that most knife collectors don't have a clue about what makes a good tactical defense knife. They don't have any martial art skills, and aren't educated in how to use a knife for fighting. Big bulky heavy knives,including fixed blades,usually aren't the best. Most knife nerds don't realize that even an ounce and a half difference will slow up your hand speed noticeably in a fight. So I'd recommend these knives for actual use. They can be both tactical/defense as well as just good useful knives for camping,fishing, and tools.Also,one thing I don't like in any knife is blade flex,lock rock,or feeling the knife move (liners),when you grab hold of the blade firmly. And most of the youtube reviewers don't really grab hold hard and stress the knife in their reviews. 1. QSP Pangolin . About $40 dollars on Amazon. Built well. D2 steel, tested and it's real. Thick blade stock and grip. 3 3/4" blade. Excellent detent action. The behind the edge grind is slightly thicker than alot of the latest releases from knife brands which seem to be moving to very thin. Which is great for food prep or cutting cardboard. But the thin edge makes it more vulnerable to damage and rolling over. The tip is thick so no worries about it breaking easily.Weighs about 5 oz. 2. Bestech Muskie. $52 dollars everywhere including Amazon. D2 steel, just under 3. 3/4" blade. Weight 4.6 oz. Tip is medium,so it's not delicate. Behind the edge grind is good,about .5 mm or .020", not real thin like Civivi knives are,but not too thick. 3.Ruike P105 Fang. One of the best sub $40 dollar knives for the money. Blade about 3.6", very flat thin grind,behind the edge also good. A hair thinner than the Bestech Muskie. The action is the best in my small collection. 14c28n Sandvik steel blade. Looks and feels more expensive than many other Chinese budget knives do. Weighs about 5 oz. Thin tip and thin flat grind makes this an excellent slicing knife. Came sharper from the factory than most knives I've bought. 4.Sitivien ST104. Right now under $25 dollars on Amazon. D2 Steel. Over 3 3/4" blade. One of my favorite blade shapes and grind. Thick enough at the tip for piercing. Excellent behind the edge,close to the Ruike P105, and thin flat grind as you move up also. SThis knife slices well. Weighs just over 5 oz. Good action,detent is a bit strong so it needs to be broken in a bit. Great ergos, I love the shape and grip of this model. This blade shape and size is good for defense. It has some curve upwards toward the tip which is better. Overall,it's the best cheapest knife I've bought.I bought three,all were very sharp from the factory. I have expensive Japanese chefs knives that require whetstones to sharpen them. After years of practice,I can get a knife really sharp. One of these Sitivien ST104's came as sharp as my chef knives. The grind angles on all three were very consistent. The top brands I have are Bestech, great overall quality, built solidly,and good action. Ruike, Twosun,Freetiger,Harnds, Ganzo Firebird, and Kubey, are all good brands. I've bought knives from each brand. I recommend the Bestsech Arctic also. Great 3.5: D2 steel knife with a great handle grip. Thinner edge and grind than the Muskie. $52 everywhere.

Spyderco Endura is a GREAT choice. It's about the same price as your first 3 recommendations, but one of the main advantages with it is it is not made in an enemy country like the CCP China NOR is it made by Democrat supporting traitors (like Benchmade for example). Great design for SD and utility, well made.
@deydrm

@@emanuelroth7960 Spyderco Endura is not the same price as my recommendations. At around $90, It's over twice the price of the QSP Pangolin and the Ruike P105. And the Sitivien ST104 is under $25. right now. And another thing. The handle material,FRN,that Spyderco uses looks and feels really cheap. Like cheap molded plastic. FRN doesn't compare to G10 scales in look and feel. NowI could get all three of those knives for about 12 bucks more than one Spyderco Endura.

Bubba, that is the stupidest thing I have heard all day. I have a scar from a knife fight. So what? That was before I started taking Kali and other knife fighting classes. My instructors were great instructors. You would be surprised how many firearms instructors have never dropped the hammer on another human being. Just because I have, that doesn’t make me better than them. Respect is due where it is due. I don’t bring frauds on this channel. Thanks for watching, TR

@@TacticalRifleman your channel is great. No offense intended. To get back to the point, when you say, "I fight with fixed blades," you sound like you do, in fact, fight with knives. Nobody outside of the Third World does that on a regular basis. As you know, there is no one alive who can keep from getting cut over and over in a real, sustained fight with knives. No one can make a career out of that. You can teach people tactics, but you can't fight regularly. I assume your guest meant he TEACHES with fixed blades. I'm just a soft, flabby KZbin viewer, and I don't know much, but I do have a plan for knife attacks. I plan to draw my gun, run like hell, and scream for help while throwing money. Because I know I WILL get cut up if I get close to a nut with a knife, and so would Doug Marcaida himself. There is no expert on earth who can avoid getting hacked up in a real knife fight. I don't want to go into a knife situation with the Internet-fed delusion that I can pull my own knife, fight and emerge unharmed. I don't mean to disrespect anyone. I have no idea who your guest is or what honors he deserves. For all I know, he took Mosul all by himself, armed with a can opener. I was just surfing KZbin and saw this video. I didn't expect anyone to take me seriously and get hot under the collar. I don't see how my comment can be the stupidest thing you've heard today. You must not be following our president's appearances or watching CNN.

Man you are using Doug Marcaida as a example saying even he would get cut in a knife fight as if he is the number 1 expert in the world with real world experience and only his opinion matters and you feel the need to question what the old man in this video said about fighting with fixed blades. I'll help you understand the differences between the two so maybe you think before you add your opinion before doing your research. Doug Marcaida is a great practitioner of Filipino martial arts however he is a TEACHER of the arts. People such as yourself see him as the greatest in the world because he is on TV & KZbin and portrayed as a expert he is a entertainer. However if you were to ever journey to the Philippines for a holiday you will see what seems like frail old man in every town that in their 70s that will show you what a expert Kali master actually is. Doug is Military veteran serving in the airforce in logistics for 8yrs. Now that old man in the Video you felt the need to question is Randy 'Rawhide' Wurst he didn't spend his 27 years in the military in logistics he became a special forces green beret serving in 5 major conflicts throughout his career. Randy is a expert with real world experience and he could probably win a knife fight using only a spoon. Randy along with the rest of the Tactical Rifleman team are experts having spent decades of their lives in SF risking their lives not playing Call of duty in their mums basement. Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young. Old warriors did not get old by accident; they got old by being wise, having the right knowledge, and being tough. Never underestimate an old man who has grown up in a rough profession or a rough environment. These men have been around. They have done things, and experienced things, that you probably have never even thought about. They are tough, their minds are tough, and they have the knowledge, the skill, and the will to finish you off, if you force them to do so. A boy will fight you, but a older man will hurt you.
