I was stuck between the Para 2 and Manix 2 lightweight. I liked the ergos of the Para 2 better. Ultimately the lock was the deciding factor. The lock on the Para rubs my finger when opening the knife. The Manix ergos are really good, the weight is great and the lock is easy to adapt to. I sourced o e from a local knife shop for $145. I know I could have got it cheaper online, but I wanted to support a local business.

I'm partial to my ZT 0452CF. Build quality is excellent, blade geometry works, on larger side but not too large to EDC, came in at 240 at time of purchase. Has titanium frame lock and one side is carbon fiber. I like your picks but its ZT for the win. A close second would be a Kizer bad dog by Matt cucchiara. Can be had around 160 right now and is solid.

They are throughly out of stock, but my one-and-done would be the Bark River Mini Aurora in 3V. Mid-sized blade, thin enough to slice well, convex edge is strong enough for hard work, 3V is the closest we’ve got to indestructible at the moment, general utility shape is suited for almost any task, can literally be hammered through logs, and it’s classy as hell. Plus, super duper warranty in case I mess it up.

Solid recs! I am surprised you didn’t mention the R2D2 in the budget category. And my choice if I could only have 1 would be my 940-1, because it has the most blade real estate of a knife you can’t even feel yourself carrying, and also because I’m a lefty so the axis lock stuff is great for that. Runners up, under the same logic and fun fidget factor would be the large or small Ritter Hogue. I own both and love both.

If it weren't for the possibility of omega springs breaking (ive broken 2), I'd definitely pick my bm 940. Smooth as butter, holds a great edge, lightweight and I can't think of another knife with a 3" blade that disappears in the pocket the way the 940 does. But because i can't change the omega spring problem, im gonna say my pm2.

All solid recommendations, out of those shown I have a Gen 1 Para 2, Para 3 LW, and a Banter. The Para 2 is a little large for EDC IMHO and out of the Para 3 LW and Banter either is great choice. I prefer the lock on the Para 3 but I prefer the neutral ergos on the Banter. The Banter also looks tiny but has pretty much the same size cutting edge as the Para 3. The Banter also looks a little less stabby than the Para 3 if that's a concern.

Just one note: the M390 Spyderco Para3 shown here was not a sprint run; it was a DLT Trading dealer exclusive. The distinctions are that Spyderco sprint runs are limited runs available throughout the dealer network and they are single releases. The dealer exclusives often come out in multiple runs, though some dealers, such as BladeHQ tend to do single run dealer exclusives. Another difference is that dealer exclusives are released at an announced date and time, while Spyderco sprints are a hit and miss thing.

@@butcheredalive I mean, I've got medium-ish sized man hands, though I usually wear large gloves. It fits my hands well with some room to spare. The small blade makes you think the handle will be small, but it's plenty big for most people. I haven't owned a Manix 2, but it's on my list of potential spyderco knives. Especially because it's still available in Spy27, which I've heard is pretty great. I would personally recommend starting with the Para 3 if you haven't had a compression lock knife before. Then if you like it, venture into Spyderco's other offerings. If you've already experienced the compression lock and aren't a huge fan, then I'd say the Manix is an easy choice to make.

The para 3 Is amazing man, it's paramilitary 2 but smaller and imo better. The civivi elementum is also good

After having owned the para 3 LW for about a year. I honestly do not recommended it because you will eventually just want to upgrade to the g10 version or the paramilitary 2. So if you're think about picking up the lightweight just got for the g10 version trust me.

"I'm not a steel snob but... I'll only carry the Elementum in S35VN..." :))) The advantage of the Small Sebenza 31 over the Large 21 (or 31) is the Small 31 is legal to carry in more jurisdictions due to the sub 3" blade length. I'm with you on the Sebenza if I could only have one. One small, one large. Case closed.

I have a Large Inkosi and two Small Seb 21s (a WC and a dressy Unique) just for that reason. I know the blade size of the Inkosi is legal in my neck of the woods, but when I travel to bigger cities, or visit non-knife friends/family I'll grab my H&T Mini Engineer and put a Seb in it. .

In my opinion, the best knife you can get in the $180 - $275 range would be a TRM Neutron or Atom. Great knives that are an excellent value. I have seen that they are a little hard to get but It only took me 2 weeks to get my brand new neutron after first finding out about it.

I've got several folding knives. Yes, only several. Native 5 is the last knife I need. I'll buy another one if I wear this one out, or sooner if they make one with a compression lock. This is coming from a guy that carried an Endura for 25 years.
@blairtaylor9552
@blairtaylor9552 2 жыл бұрын
I have to second that. I EDC my native 5 every workday (tho it is special- sprint run/CF/S110V). You never really need any larger SLICER blade than it has, and with the full choil, I also have full grip and full control even with large hands, being 6'-4". It's just small enough to be non-threatening to most of the general public & easily goes un-noticed in the pocket. (PS: I ALSO bought a second IDENTICAL Native 5 sprint; in case I ever lose it I have an immediate replacement!!!). I have a couple larger carries for outdoors/weekends, but not really appropriate during the work week. I sold a BM943 (un-satisfying feel and sound, like a toy, next to any well-built hard use knife). So no desire for Benchmade. Also won't own another ZT- I've had a couple apart and have seen the miniature PB flat washers they used to guide the blade, so not fond of ZT internals at all. I don't like knives that are mechanically marginal and designed to sell on looks alone. I like knives built as well as Hinderer or CR, though I'm not drawn to their particular style. I also prefer having just a few premium knives, over a junk drawer full of less desireables (buy once, cry once).

When I thought about it, like really thought about it, I had to admit to myself that the best, "if I could only own one knife" knife it would be a lame victorinox SD. It just fits in to more situations because of its size, weight, and versatility. It's as good in the boardroom as it is in deep "haven't seen another human in two weeks" field work. Second to that I do love my boker spillo.

👍 Good overview of some interesting knives. I cannot argue with your what-if one and only choice. Excellent knife. Having said that, I would argue for these in the less expensive ranges: Buck 110, Victorinox Huntsman SAK, Rough Ryder Reserve Common Stock, Cold Steel AD10, Lionsteel TM1. And, one should not forget the KaBar Mule, or the the original SOG Tomcat. Just sayin’. I was shocked & dismayed that none of these made your list either as the selected knife in these price ranges or one of the alternatives. 😀

I’ve got a Benchmade AFCK 800sbt I picked up in ‘95, it’s been in my pocket for the better part of 25 years. A few others found a way into my pocket but never for long, carried this AFCK through three tours of Iraq and most of my career as an Army Infantryman. Does Benchmade even still make the AFCK? 😂
