Bough a new one , in 1990 £4250, actually didn’t realise how tall it was , but it was like riding a magic carpet , you could have run over a house brick and never even noticed, i remember riding down kirkstone pass one nite about 1995 ish, with a friend on a Ducati 900 monster , and he couldn’t get anywhere near me , and everything Paul says is correct , he definitely knows that bike , and the front brakes were just for show !!! 🏍🏍👍👍but I kept it 28 years

I had a '91 machine from '05-'11. It was my daily commuting workhorse. Fitted a new reg/rec, a taller seat and repaired the rusty sub-frame. Heavy brute with a heavy clutch and heavy throttle. Good enough for touring with smallish female passenger but can't say I was particularly enthusiastic about the bike. Sold it to a fellah in the next street from me and he's still using it.

What made the bike great, is that it gave adventure riders exactly what they wanted. Mid weight simplicity that could be repaired on the side of the road with an underseat tool kit and no electronics or sensors

I own and ride my 1990 XTZ750 a lot. I do Enduro rallies on mine (what sometimes is not the smartest idea to compete with 690s/701s :) ). My bike is not a looker, all the panels are cracked, held with tape and stickers. It has character and it is still living the hard offroad life that it, in my opinion, supposed to live. Sadly currently the engine is in pieces, looking for the pieces of the clutch basked spring that decided to explode in the engine at the last rally I did a week ago. Can't wait until I find all the pieces and can put the bike back together again. It is the best bike I have owned over the years.

Been riding mine for the past 7 years. It’s my go to and reliable travel bike. Does everything nicely and most of all very comfortably. Indeed, a 6th gear is missing so I put a smaller rear sprocket to compensate. Mine has a strange flat spot between 2000 and 2200 rpm and still haven’t found a solution to adjust that.

Coincidentally, Itchy Boots (Noraly Schoenmaker) has just bought a 1987 Yamaha XT600Z 1VJ Ténéré, originally a 595cc, 43hp single thumper, for her next tour after her accident. Her bike has been rebuilt, customised, and lowered for her. Crucially, it's a simple lightweight bike, because she'll drop it-a lot!

Great machine to own and ride, i live in the Pyrénées so a mix of all surfaces, pulls like a Norton Commando from 2k no snatching, and it’ll poodle so to admire the scenery, if I was to replace, it would have to be something special, Cagiva Gran Canyon ??

Neevsey- love the channel and the community here. This question has nothing to do with this latest video, but it is timely. I believe you once said that the 'midsize' Panigales were the spiritual successor to the GSXR-750. Is this now true of the R9 as well? Or do you think it will suffer from being based on a platform with the MT-09 and Tracer, and not being designed from the ground up as a true sportbike?

Sorry, but I'm in this moment actually looking for TDM 850, the 2-nd gen. as an alternative because it is very hard to find XTZ770 in good condition. So I want to put on TDM fork with 21" wheel and it will begin to look less asphalt and more rally-like. In my imagination at least. (By the way, what do think about this idea? I don't use bike in hard, wet mud, my main areas are ground roads and I ride staying in footpegs.) I've heard you were discussing TDM, something about oil drink and 5 valves- I caught this. But what else did you and owner say? Something about reliability of TDM' s engine?

Ahh, thats the problem with these old beasts. Looks the part, but goes well, like a big lump. I really love old Africas and Teneres just for the looks, but thats about it. I started on a 650 Transalp and its a wonderful little bike, but the suspension is just garbage. And these big things are no better. Yes, everything can be upgraded, but you get the point. Still I would love to have a Tenere or Africa in mint condition. I would put it in my living room on a display and would never ride it. Would hang my freshly washed socks on the handlebars, sit down next to it, drink beer and just enjoy the thing.
