They leave us hints and bread crumbs into their inner conflict that they battle every day alone and in plan sight. Breaks my heart when I see a warrior get tired of the fight and give themselves to rest and the end of their pain. Tragic. Rest in peace Chester.

The one thing I usually like about Linkin Park that Numb doesn't display much of is Mike Shinoda's and Chester Bennington's ability to interchange their vocal styles. Very few vocalists are actually able to pull off that. Forgotten is a good example of this with their intro and bridge.

This song really shows how simple but effective music can be while still being excellent. If you wrote the lines first, the guitar really emphasizes the stronger notes that Chester’s voice has on this track. And the synth isn’t too crazy either. The bass is simple too. But the simplicity makes so much sense for the song. I personally wouldn’t have changed it in any way.
@LRM12o8 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it a simple song, really. Sure, the individual parts are indeed simple, but the composition is anything but. This ain't your simple pop-punk hymn that anyone could have written, there's A LOT going on in this song and putting all these parts together in such a harmonic and conclusive way is not easy. Imo it's always been a big part of Linkin Park's signature sound to combine lots of simple pieces into a complex composition that lets you discover something new every time without sounding cluttered. My favorite example for that is Powerless. I've probably listened to analyzed that song a hundred times.
@megaascension2748 Жыл бұрын
@@LRM12o8 Oh, I fully agree. I think that's what makes Linkin Park great, the individual parts are designed so that certain parts can shine individually. And Powerless is such a great underrated track by the band.

Van Halen's "Push Comes To Shove" from their "Fair Warning" album. It's almost as if they were paying homage to the Rolling Stones during their "Some Girls" era and yet it's still, unmistakably, Van Halen. Why is it great? Surprisingly, the bass line (and tone) is exceptional. The rhythm guitar part is typically great, but atypical for his style and guitar tone. The guitar solo is tastefully composed, with good phrasing and tone, and complements the song all without suffering from the "Hey, look at me!" thing. I love the sound of the tune and the record as a whole. It's dark and raw and the least radio friendly outing they ever released, but for the better. Anyway, for me, it's their most perfect (unpopular) song ever... which will likely cause it to never be explored on "What Makes This Song Great?" but sometimes it's nice to be wrong.

God, hearing Chester is a straight shot to my heart. It takes me straight back to when I was a teen and all my extended family members could sing. I mean sing! There are records, albums and tracks a glory. I grew up tone deaf. I was that kid who was the loudest in the school play but had the worst voice. When I was around 13 my parents divorced and (years later both of my parents told me that they unfairly leaned on me to help them through it and fear that they hurt me in process) this is when I found Linkin Park. I was hipster in that I was the person I knew who had heard their music. I very quickly realized that my voice was similar to Chester's. At the same time one of my cousin's who I had grown close to taught me how to harmonize(after I admitted that was terrified to sing around my family) so I spent countless hours listening to this band and picking notes to sing to see how they worked with the song and learning how to sing as a result. Fast forward about 15 years years I sang 'What I've done' at a karaoke event my Dad was also attending and he ran up and hugged me after the song and said he had no idea I had a "rocker" growl to my voice. Bear in mind I sing 1st tenor in my church choir. The day I heard Chester had committed suicide, I was a staff member for a summer camp. My sister text me "I don't know if you've heard yet, but Chester Bennington was found dead today" I literally dropped my phone, prompting one of the other staffers to notice and ask what was wrong. I tried to articulate but was mostly unsuccessful and was excused from the exercise. Now life happens and you lose touch with reality sometimes. I hadn't heard 'One More Light' at this point and come across it while reading about his death. I listened to that song while ugly crying for an hour until another staffer came to check on me and I told her this story... God damn, hearing his voice is a straight shot to me heart.

I can sorta relate to that, my entire family is musically talented and every time we have a big like family get together everyone sings or plays something like all of us together and it's amazing but I also grew up listening to Chester and realising my voice was like his in terms of pitch and I can sorta do his vibrato and screams too so I refused to believe it when the news first broke of his death cause I was just so lost after losing one of my biggest inspirations

I lost interest in the band after Meteora with all the electro stuff but Hybrid Theory will always be in my disc collection and was the biggest album at tye start of the millennium when I was 18, even in Chile. This is a major long shot, but I would love your analysis of Type O Negative. My all time favorite band, to me they are musical geniuses. Peter Steele's death hit me really hard

Guys, he doesn't listen to stuff in the comments (for the most part). Go to his website and hit the forum. There is a dedicated place for suggestions for this series. Good luck!

This song is proof to me that Chester’s soul was in torment. Absolutely heartbreaking! Thanks Rick for sharing it. May he rest in peace.

Anyone who still thinks this is "edgy garbage for teens" should watch this video. Numb is the Smells Like Teen Spirit of the 2000's.

I think In The End would be the "Teen Spirit" of the 2000s.

Linkin Park is amazing. Their first 2 albums are stellar. Such an amazing group of musicians, I can't imagine it's easy for that many people to collaborate on something.

Man, I need a loop of those drums. Never realised they had a sick reverb having listened to this song thousands of times. How did you separate stems. Amazing analysis Rick Beato
