Here's the deal, if you can only have one mic, an SM57 is the best solution and here's why: room acoustics. Most home studios don't have have good sounding acoustics/ambient reverb and so the only reverb that we want to mix with is what we add in the box. We need a "dry" microphone signal in order to get that. With a condenser, especially a heavily EQ'd inexpensive one, I've often found myself fighting bad/brittle/boomy frequency build-up in my mix from the sound of the room. especially recording several layered acoustic tracks in the same exact spot in your recording space. A dynamic microphone like an SM57 or '58 is likely the only way to get "dry" tracks for many people. In particular, I'm a soft singer but I play my acoustic guitar loudly. If my condenser mic gain is high enough to get good sounding vocals from me, then it usually picks up the room as well. Condenser mics do offer more detail in the sonic image, but it's not noticable except in songs that have have a lot of "space" in the tracking landscape

I've always found the SM57 sound a bit too unnatural and boxy on some sources especially on snare and amps I always wanted to eq that a good bit away, Behringer recently released a new SM57 clone, which in my opinion fixes that issue. Sounds pretty natural and open. Biggest plus: Its 18€ Couldn't compare it on vocals yet, and it might be a little bit less detailed, but out of the mic, it sounds a lot fuller and brighter, more the way it's coming out of the amp/from the snare

@@yurisilva7860 If you are experiencing noise in your signal due to it: yes. Also a pre amp can give you nice coloration of the sound, but that doesn't neccessarily always makes the signal better, sometimes you want a true to life signal without coloration. Do some research on which pre-amp fits your needs regarding coloration and think about what things you want to record in advance like "Will I record vocals too some time down the line?"
@yurisilva7860
@yurisilva7860 4 жыл бұрын
@@phenix8514 I realize that SM57 isn't very good for classical guitar recording. I just bought an AudioTechnica AT2020 and solved my problem. But about my low input w/ SM57, I need to increase interface gain to a very high level to get a good signal. I'll do a research about those pre-amps for others recording purposes. Thanks!

Our third single will be released soon, and Graham has a large credit in the things I did over the last year. Technical, gear, production stuff, but by far the most valuable advice we can get from him is that musicianship is king over all. Don't mind the gear, just keep trying until a song that's worthy of seeing the light pops up.

The AKG Perception 170 is fantastic for acoustic guitar but keep in mind it needs 45V phantom power. The Shure SM57 is a good dynamic mic for vocals and electric guitar amps. A Sennheiser 906 isn't great for vocals, but is better than the SM57 for electric guitar as it picks up subtleties the SM57 does not.

If you are on a strict budget, then I really recommend one of the cheap Chinese microphones from brands like Tonor, Neewer, or Excelvan. I myself have the Neewer NW-7000 USB and with some proper EQ and noise removal, it sounds on par with the AT-2020. For just $30 for the whole set, including a stand, shock mount, pop filter and foam cap, it can't be beaten in terms of price/performance. I tried doing some vocals today and it just sounded amazing.

I have about a dozen MXL mics from various price points. I first got hooked on them back in the late 1990s when they were called Marshall Mics. I was interning in a "real" studio and we bought a V57M. We ran it up against a Neumann U87, a Sennheiser 441 and a Manley Gold Reference in various scenarios. It held up rather well. Still my go-to vocal mic in my home studio. Your mileage may vary.

I’m recording (ideally live) vocals and acoustic guitar songs. I’m looking to get a nice layered and ambient sound, kind of like city and colour. My voice is 2nd soprano and still sounds young, I’d like to keep the sound warm and vintage. I’m looking into getting the AKG c414 xls pairs and shure ksm32. Any price point, I just need suggestions

agreed with all what you said in the video, there's some more stuff to consider: recently I've had a chance to compare various mics for vocals, and was surprised how nice small-diagraphm condenser mic sounds on vocals, definitely worth the try if you seek for some new flavour for vocals, next thing is an epic mic I've purchased (more pieces actually) is sE X1D, it's large-diagraphm condenser (super-fast responsive titan membrane) designed for extreme loudness pressure, particularly kick drums, but I prefer to use it for close miking drums from bottom, and also saxophones or guitar cabs, as it has fairly straght frequency response and for me the best versatile condenser mic of the decade

Guys - what are your thoughts on using the SM57 for recording acoustic instruments for traditional music - eg fiddles, cello, flute, concertina?
@wolframitered4279
@wolframitered4279 4 жыл бұрын
SM57 is great for all-around instruments. I use two on my snare drum and a third for vocals/voice-over. I'd like to use them on my toms too eventually. I've read of 57's being used on pretty much every instrument with great results. If you get ONE microphone, it should be an SM57 in my opinion. You won't be able to destroy it. It will sound great for almost anything except deep bass or extreme high-end (its frequency response is from about 40Hz to about 15kHz with a gradual roll-off at both ends plus a "presence" peak at around 5-7kHz). It doesn't even "color" the recording very much, not as much as an SM58 does to my ears. 57's are pretty neutral-sounding. Once you get some practice you'll be able to hear how a 57 colors your recordings and it's not a lot, certainly not anything the average listener will be able to detect/notice. The SM57 has been a recording standard for decades. I like 'em a lot.

When I went to a prism interface at over 2k I didn't mix any better and my mixes didn't have any perceivable benefits. I use both and would be just as happy with just my 500 dollar MR816X. I still have an old m-audio 2 channel which sounded fantastic but it's so old i can't get it working on my new systems. Those scarlets look fantastic and would pull great mixes once your mix skills are up there.

Haha dude exactly! I have released professional sounding tracks through a record label using my Scarlett. It does all boil down to skill. If you don't have a good performance to start with, and you don't know how to produce, mix and master properly no amount of high end gear will save you. These salespeople act as if the pre-amps and converters will instantly make you a better singer/musician. I've pulled amazing vocals with an SM58. It's all one big marketing scam trying to overwhelm beginners into spending a shit load of money.

So... just for doing Voice Over work where I am not singing, but possibly yelling or screaming, or doing loud character voices for animation... but also usually almost always just speaking in a normal tone, which microphone is the best? Also, I used to be an actor who specialized in voice-over back in the 1980s and 1990s but fell out of it as I ended up pursuing other things at the end of the1990s... and now I find myself getting back into doing voice-over work as more people and production companies are asking me to do VO work for them again. But, technology has changed a lot, and for the better. The voice-over school that I went to in Burbank, California recommended some incredibly expensive microphones, which I don't necessarily have a problem with spending the money on... at a later date when I am "raking" the money in again... but for now, since I am just getting back into this kind of work, I want to ease into it so my wallet (and my wife... who totally supports me in getting back into this) don't scream at me in pain. That being said, I have a relatively high pitched/toned voice... but I also do a lot of low-toned voice-over work as well. My range can go from very squeaky and mousey sounding to those deep, raspy, guttural, and deep tones. I like your recommendations in this video, but I don't want to have to purchase a bunch of mics to test (although, I might have to do that) and then to have to return the ones that I don't like. THAT is a pain in the neck. Anyway, any recommendations to narrow down my search would be great... that is, if you don't mind. Excellent video, and of course, a THUMBS UP!

Hey, I am looking to get a microphone that works excellent with high soprano/operatic vocals and with the $100 dollar rule. I am looking to record more high soprano/lyrical work compared to the opera. Thank you!

A good one to try is the Shure beta 58a. It's a dynamic mic, so it can handle the power of your operatic voice. It is more sensitive in the high range than the Shure SM 58, so that should work well for you as a soprano. They're $150 new, but you might find a used one for less. If at all possible, try before you buy, picking a mic is a subjective as well as a technical decision. Good luck in your search.

Agree to go with condensers over dynamics in many cases. BUT: only if the place you're recording at has been acoustically treated! I love my Rode NT1a for example, but if I were to use it in my bedroom you would hear my refrigerator, my neighbors farts and a spider laughing about my singing skills. If you have only the slightest bit of noise, or that metallic echo in your room -> go with a dynamic or treat your room. Wouldn't be right to tell people to go for a condenser that CAN absolutely help you get a good recording, but if the room is shitty, the recording will be as well (in most cases).

Respected Sir, Thank you very much for your valuable suggestions!!!!!!!! I want to know that which microphone is best for recording the instruments like a Guitar and a Dholak (Indian instrument)? I have already a Samson Q2U mic. & a Rode NT1a mic. Is Rode NT1a is enough to record a Guitar or a Dholak? or Should I buy another mic. for recording an instrument? You're requested to suggest me.

R34L157 the Shure SM7B is a cool one because it naturally sounds dark. so i think it’ll really accentuate the voice nicely if used for throat singing

Hey Graham, what do you think of the Steve Slate mic emulation hardware/software kit? I hear good things about it. His new thing has multiple mics at a great price. Isn't the concept amazing? When he gets it perfected, we will all have any mics we want at a very affordable price. We won't have to settle for the mics we have. All this insane technology is heading for perfection. Is that what we want? Is perfection in music a good thing. A theoretically bad mic could make a part of a song sound good with a special sound. Didn't you ever get a sound that was cool with a crappy mic? You never know what someone's voice will sound like with any given combination of gear. Are you getting my point? With emulations of everything: mics, amps, guitars, synths etc etc, there is no limit. The next thing will be software that analyzes all the available emulation you have and automatically suggest good combinations. YES, I am going too far with this, but it's fun.

I agree that Mics are indeed the crucial first step in the gain chain ( as well as their placement) - BUT - the mic preamp is JUST as important. But I find it difficult to talk about the quality of microphones - of any price or caliber - without placing the same importance on the mic pre. IMO, you can't speak of the quality of one without the quality of the other. Those who have ever had the chance to use a very good ( or great) preamp, will know there's a big difference - even with inexpensive dynamic mic workhorses, like a 57/58. I'm not knocking entry level preamps, and if all you are doing is home recording as a hobbyist, they work fine, they'll get the job done. But ...use a good condenser, dynamic (or ribbon) on a great preamp (such as a Millennia, Grace, ISA, or a "character" pre such as a Neve, Warm, Heritage, etc.), and I promise you, you'll hear the difference(s) immediately, between that combination, and even an expensive, pro-level condenser through typical budget-level preamp/interfaces. It's a totally different level of fidelity. It will also make the tracks you record through these preamps a lot easier to mix, and provide you with more gain to run low output dynamics and ribbons at their optimum. Upper level tube and transformer based preamps are also much nicer to "drive" hot than budget preamps are. Good preamps will often have sweet spots and nice harmonic distortion when pushed, while lower quality preamps get noisy and harsh. If you don't think that both these things are important, keep in mind that the sonic quality of your recording chain will only ever sound as good as its weakest link. ;)

What mic for classically trained / musical theatre belting singer? My rode nt1a sounds amazing for quieter low sections but clips on loud or high notes. Increased distance to mic and changes in gain just make sound too thin or distant? What mic would be good? For my personal use so don't want to spend a fortune.

A huge thanks for the video man! I have been following your 'record a song from scratch' series and it's damn helpful... Probably the best series of its kind on youtube :) ... Had a small question, I am actually planning to go for a budget microphone to record vocals... Considering my budget and going through most of the available products, I hv locked down upon the MXL 770... Problem is it is a small diaphragm condenser mic, contrary to what you have suggested and reading it's reviews, I haven't found many complaints... What's your take on this... Should I go for it or shd I strictly go for some large diaphragm one?? Will it make a major difference in terms of recording quality??
