When it comes to language, it's not simply East-West linguistic division. The first thing is, in most cities all across Ukraine there is more Russian-speakers but there's more Ukrainian-speakers overall: Ukrainian dominates most of the rural area in Ukraine, including the Eastern perts. The second thing is that most Russian-speakers in Ukraine still identify themselves as ethnic Ukrainians: if you take Kyiv, the capital, for example, there's more than 80% Ukrainians, more than 70% of those who claim their mother tongue is Ukrainian but in fact you're much more likely to hear Russian in the streets of the city. And the last thing to take into consideration is that while there is a certain correlation between language and political views, there were also loyal Ukrainian-speaking members of pro-Russian Yanukovych government and actually a half of those who fight for Ukrainian side in the war on Donbas speak Russian. So you can't divide Ukraine into "Russian" and "Ukrainian" parts that easily: aside from natural transitional dialects between the close languages, they both mix and interact on every level. The language itself would never be the case if not for the polititians who preserved and highlighted the division for the sake of their political ambitions which came to extreme in the years of Yanukovych.

You're wrong and you know it. More people in Ukraine speak russian. Even if your suggestion that Ukrainian speakers dominate in the rural area (say that to Lugansk/Donetsk people) is correct, the level of urbanization of Ukraine is more than 70%.

@MrDannyk123

Patrick Lundström Firstly, it is most definitely not Ukrainian, multiple referendums (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea#Autonomous_Republic_within_Ukraine_.281991.E2.80.932014.29) show this. Secondly, I could go into how Crimea has been a strategically important place for Russia for centuries but I don't have time for that: all you need to know is that the Ukrainian & Russian governments agreed to this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_Treaty_on_the_Status_and_Conditions_of_the_Black_Sea_Fleet which included Russian use of several facilities, as well as their main base in Sevastopol until 2017. Lastly, there are the people themselves, which I'm sure you've heard about. So the fact it was Ukrainian territory in the first place is highly debated and if the vast majority of it's population are happy with the current situation, then I don't see a problem.

Although most of what's been said in the video is valid and unbiased, I would like to stress a a couple of important things: - speaking Russian is not equal to being Russian ethnically or culturally; there's actually quite a large portion of Russian-speaking people from the east of Ukraine that feel very strongly about their Ukrainian identity, considering Ukrainian as their native language even though speaking Russian most of the time. - this divide mentioned in the video is a bit exagerrated; it does exist, but is not as pronounced and crucial as one may think; actually, for many years it was artificially intensified by unscrupulous politicians to obtain personal dividends in the form of being elected. - separatist sentiments do exist in Donbas and in the Crimea, but, again, it's hard to say how the situation would develop without Russian interference; it's quite possible it wouldn't go beyond protests and a peaceful solution.

I am from Crimea and my wife is from Lugansk (probably the city with the largest separatism movement). Here is our family opinion: Regions that want to be independent from Kiev are seeking for another more rich patron to feed them: same situation in criteria and the east Ukraine. These are the most depressed and subsided regions. The level of education and culture there is the lowest in entire country. From the economy stand point, their independence is impossible. "Cultural, Linguistics and Economical differences" really existed in president election in 2010. But in 5 year our country made a great progress in reaching the compromise. In the most recent presided election, the country was more united than ever where current president got 54.7% of votes while his most successful opponent got only 12.8%. That is a huge a progress in the development of the national goals and priorities. I am a Russian native speak and I've never been discriminated in any part of the country. Russian in ex USSR is like English in the world. Any educated person in Ukraine speaks 3 languages: Russian, Ukrainian and English. People I know that felt that that Russia is more convenient place to live just moved there without asking Russia to come and take them. Right now, these differences are just a cover for stupidity and inability to resolve conflicts by people that prefer a war over a dialog. Fortunately, there are only 3 regions left where such people take majority of population. And that's also for a reason: USSR was a terrible place that devastated humanity and culture of people who leaved there. You can see the confirmation of this fact by comparing the cultural and economic level to the number of year country spent as USSR member. There is a clear trend that - than less you were in USSR than better for you.
@indycoon
@indycoon 7 жыл бұрын
I would say that people who joined Maidan movement were seeking for another more rich patron to feed them. People who want to be with Russia are much more reasonable. They don't dream about 3000 euro salaries, they work and understand that their market is Russia, not Europe where they have overproduction. 3 years with EU have proven that good enough. EU doesn't want to buy anything from Ukraine. When Ukraine refused to cooperate with Russia, it was a big mistake.
@BogdanGusiev
@BogdanGusiev 7 жыл бұрын
Everyone is seeking for high salaries, it just depends on how you want to get them. Crimea and Lugandonia (regions currently occupied by russia) are the poorest in Ukraine and probably in Europe. Most of those don't work at all and are not planning to. Russia is a place where they search for easy money from over-profit from oil. In EU you have to work hard to get those 3k EUR.
@indycoon
@indycoon 7 жыл бұрын
Bogdan Gusiev, apparently you are a brainwashed ukrainian if you use words like Lugandonia. Why not check real stats if you want to know which part was poorest or more industrial or more educated. You'd be surprised. EU doesn't need anything from Ukraine, so dreams about those 3k EUR are just dreams. Unfortunatelly stupid peasants from Western Ukraine were used to kill the ukrainian state. EU wanted Ukraine as a market and a source of cheap resources, that's all. US wanted them for their military bases and in order to stop military cooperation between Russia and Ukraine. There were no altruists who wanted to help ukrainian people. You know it very good if you are a clever person.
@BogdanGusiev
@BogdanGusiev 7 жыл бұрын
You tell too much about me by a single word. You'd better avoid that. It sounds offensive. I did see the stats. I am not sure you did. See them here: ru.tsn.ua/groshi/naibolee-dotacionnymi-regionami-ukrainy-priznany-kiev-i-donbass.html. EU needs ukraine as a shield against Russia. Russia government needs Ukraine to ensure that there is someone living poor to please it's people proud of their success. I don't have any illusions regarding any altruistic reasons from both sides. US needs Ukraine to show their power world wide. So from those 3 reasons I would pick EU and US as more interested in making Ukraine stronger. Russia is not interested in that at all.
@indycoon
@indycoon 7 жыл бұрын
Lugandonia really sounds offensive. so this word tells a lot about you. EU and US only want to use Ukraine as a tool (or even cannon-fodder)against of Russia while Russia and Ukraine are useful for each other and there was a mutual benefit in our cooperation. Also Russia is interested to see Ukraine stable while US is interested to create a zone of chaos in order to waken Russia and separate Russia from Europe. US politics tell about it openly. Search Stratfor George Friedman for example.

Dude relax are you really that surprised that I believe(d) this video? I have no idea how I would research about this and find out the real story. It's hard to find history that is relevant to this issue and I'm not a lie detector. Feel free to summarize it for me if you wouldn't mind.

***** Vox has no reason to misjudge the facts and seems accurate and objective for the most part. I don't think the makers of this video would disagree with you feeling that the division is not that great, but agitators in the east that are pro-Russian make a lot of trouble with Moscow's support. When the media reports on a conflict they report the views of each side in the conflict despite the fact that both viewpoints are rarely equally valid.

David J Gill vox does mislead and it is very subtle. Using words like pro Russian or even separates makes paints a narrative on its own. You can't sum up this conflict in a 3 min video because there is just way to much information to take account starting from the very beginning. But in my opinion and just mine if a country is this divided then brake away states should have every right to claim there on sovereignty. So the war would stop the propaganda has gotta so bad it's hard to tell the truth. If the east wish to stay with Russia let them if Kiev to the west/eu let it be. This might be the chance that russia and the eu could work closely to find common ground Thur this Avenue. I'm not an expert and I am also extremely high rite now. But it makes sense to me

Let me start from that I am Ukrainian. I am from the region which according to this video tends towards Russia, however in reality people are against such a friendship. The main point of the video is based on the historical language difference, however there are countries where people speak several languages and are OK with that, e.g., Switzerland. I find that this a very weak argument and a whole video is simply a work of armatures which have no idea what is going on.

Ukraine began its integration into EU in 2008, just after Russia initiated its trade sanctions against Ukraine in 2007. Russian trade sanctions were violations of numerous trade agreements and CIS itself. In this way Russia made a clear message about the worth of its promises. Points for at least trying to look beyond the headlines but there is alot missing here and some outright distortions. The will of the people in Crimea and Novorussiya is not okay or legal under international law but a US/EU coup d'etat in Kiev is? Also the bit about Holodomor is skewed and often used to justify nationalist and outright fascists today. Like somehow a famine over 70 years agojustifies basically skinheads taht worship nazi ally Stepan Bandera today. Also the historical links between Russia and Ukraine go back far further then the 18th century. Kiev Rus was what became the Russian Empire and was founded in Kiev about 1000 years ago. Also the use of Tymoshenko as an example of the "pro European" western Ukraine is funny since she is a Russian Ukrainian who could not even speak Ukrainian till she was in her 40s and has basically sold out her own people for power. And if some of what has been leaked about her has even called for the eradication of her own ethnic group. No mention that the western Ukrainian nationalism is not even Ukrainian and has ties back to the Austro Hungarian Empire and later Poland. Hell the modern Ukrainian flag was a Hapsburg regimental flag at one time.

@redriverscout4404
@redriverscout4404 8 жыл бұрын
ivanlagrossemoule The difference is what I said is backed by facts. What you said is backed by nothing but State Department press releases. RT might be biased (all news is) but at least they deal in reality. Whereas as near as I can tell Western press photo copies White House press releases and has not seen real journalists since the Pentagon Papers. Don't like Russian Press? Fine check out Russia Insider which is staffed by Westerners that created it in response the the absolutely pathetic coverage in the west of pretty much anything to do with Russia. To the point that as they often demonstrate western press even completely contradicts itself or simply ignores reality when it does not suit an agenda set out of the White House. It has gotten so bad that the only people in the US who even know anything about Russia like Stephen Cohen are demonized and ridiculed when they point out basic facts on the ground, basic history of the region and an actual knowledge of the countries in question. Former soviet dissident Edward Lozanzky has gone or record that US press on Russia is now worse then the media in the Soviet Union. That should make people pause. Back your claims with some actual evidence and you might have some credibility. Accusing anyone who presents inconvenient facts of being a conspiracy theorist is beyond childish and comical and again gives you a serious credibility deficit.
@ivanlagrossemoule
@ivanlagrossemoule 8 жыл бұрын
Red River Scout What you don't understand is that your "facts" don't say what you claim they do. This is the classical conspirationist way of thinking. You find something that could be a clue to your view, but might not be, and directly assume it perfectly confirms your view. What's also very classical is to reject US views, then jump right into whatever russian propaganda has to say. RT simply doesn't deal in facts. They find people with a certain opinion, that typically fits their views, and those become their facts. Those opinions don't need to be based on other facts at all, and can be absolutely ridiculous. But they don't care about that, they just want to pass their view along. Even Fox fucking News has the decency to interview people from opposing views (though they'll shut them up if needed). I searched for an article on Russia Insider on a subject russian propaganda loves, the F-35, and exactly like predicted, they spread some bullshit that was shown to be completely wrong. Great source of information there. In fact, google shows me a list of more idiotic articles of the likes. Looks like they aren't any better than RT. Russian medias are in no way any better than western ones, and certainly aren't any less biased when it comes to coverage of themselves. In fact, having been to Ukraine multiple times since the riots and war, I can confirm without a doubt that russian medias are much further from the truth on the general situation of Ukraine.

Well, usually if you're talking about independence there are some things that make it the "right" to independence, like an ethnic group controlling the land and that the people who are fighting for that independence had already seen their own country before. If talking about war being unacceptable then it either breaks a treaty or it goes against UN laws/support.

Mario Aguilar She was there and we appreciated the support, because at that moment Ukrainians felt like they're weren't alone in the struggle. My relatives were there, my friends there, I was there, millions of citizens were there. Because were fed up with the government's corruption and abuse. That was 3 years ago and, unfortunately, despite all the optimism, everything went not as well as we wished. Primarily, because after the pro-Kremlin president had fled the country he had robbed, Putin invaded Ukraine and paralyzed it. Talk to actual Ukrainians instead of swallowing every conspiracy theory out there, if you're interested in the situation.

If they separate from Kiev, will they also remain separate from Russia to form their own independent state?
@ludmylasemeniuk6804
@ludmylasemeniuk6804 9 жыл бұрын
No they will not. Crimea and Eastern Ukraine is rich in oil and gas reserves. Eastern Ukraine wanting to be free sovereign territory from Ukraine is just a front or hoax if you will for Russia to steal from Ukraine. Russia's goal is to make all of Ukraine little russia. Most Russians are tyrannically imperialistic to where they Russify everything and strongly believe Russia is not Russia without Ukraine. Russia's propaganda machine is very powerful and keeps their own citizenry in a total dark collective society state of being. They hate Ukrainians for wanting to live in Freedom, Liberty, and Individual Alienable Rights society. With freedom comes great responsibility.

Locals, who supported rebellions want to join Russia, not independence. Russia wants to dictate it's will through this region. But they want to try new strategy this time, unlike russian previous similar projects (Karabah, Osetiya, Prednistrovye)

brod2man So, if ethnic Russian communities in America decides they do not want to live in American society, they decide they want it to be Russian, would you tell them to go back to Russia and live there or encourage them to take parts of the United States of America away and make it part of Russia? Would you say the same of where you live? Or is it just a double standard towards Ukrainians?

I can see that the Vox's intention was to show that this topic isn't just black or white as media present it. However, the story is much more complicated and tangled. Vox just showed simple and superficial divisions which don't explain the situation that easily or rightly. There's so much historical, political, linguistic and geografical background about this that I don't even want to talk about it here. This topic definitely can't fit into 3-minute video.

At the linguistic graph at 1:08 it shows that the western part of ukraine barely speaks russian , which is really false, i am half russian and half ukrainian and live in ireland, and i used to visit the west of ukraine (as my grandparents used to live there) every year for around 2 months for 8 years . And it is true that there are more ukrainian speakers in the west than in the east but from my experience more than 80% of people i spoke with spoke russian fluently. So i am really puzzled by this graph.

Good to make this kind of effort. There were much more important points to make. I.e. the pro-european protests had a lot to do with the unbelievable amount of government corruption, ineffectiveness and impunity which many see (more or less rightly) with the continued influence of Russia and its king-maker status in the country. The Maidan protests were a kind of believe that moving towards europe would bring the country out of corruption and widespread economic and demographic decline once and for all. Some areas felt this was an outright attack on the ukraine's ties with russia (also pretty much right) but by proxy felt this was also an attack on their proto-russian identities. These views were compounded by the high unemployment and economic depression of post-soviet ukraine in industrial areas. Another underlying cause was the feeling that their identity groups political influence would be withered away in a new more-democratic pro-western ukraine. Finally although, these views were common in the russian-speaking areas of Ukraine. Every poll conducted at the time of the insurrection (before and after) suggested that only a minority of people favoured any kind of insurrection or seperatism in the pro-russian areas. (The highest percentages were in Donetsk and Luhansk I believe with a little over 40%). Russia basically pushed a small number of rebels to become a movement with far greater power than they would ever have gotten only relying on popular support. Popular support would most likely not have been big enough even in the most pro-russian areas to get an influential peaceful independence movement going. Putin did not in fact create the movement outside crimea. He is a political opportunist however and made sure it would be far more powerful than it was inherently as long as it served his purposes. Sorry about the rant, but you need to be clear and balanced when you attempt to paint a balanced objective picture. Not simply repeat the narrative of pro-russian rebel leaders. There is a back story on their side too, but you can't counter a semi-complete slightly-biased western narrative with a narrative that is a far less honest attempt at painting an accurate and fair picture.

The only thing I wish, is that we Russians and Ukrainians can solve this problem and get along together. We are like brothers and sisters, all Ukrainians got relatives in Russia and all Russians got relatives in Ukraine. I hope one day both sides will be friends again and may Western media and politics not rip us apart. Love from an Indian - Russian medicine student from St. Petersburg

This video shows simplified mapping of populations in Ukraine. The border should be drawn between groups of the people, and referendum is one way to settle the discussion. Russia did it in Crimea, and the Minsk agreement included the same, for which Ukraine government is working to against. Why western Ukraine would not separate the eastern part? It may be tax income of the government, like Catalonia in Spain.
