When we attained independence in 1980, the Apartheid SA government tried at all costs through its Destabilization Policy to stop all independent countries from supporting the independence of SA. At that time the white-led SA gvt was so powerful that NO newly independent country could stand to openly support the liberation of SA, plus fears of sanctions for supporting ANC. So here is the point, diplomatically, Mugabe had to publicly reject ANC's call for whatever form of assistance but supported them behind the scenes, which you will never agree and appreciate. I am not persuading anyone to believe this but that's what happened, that is why ANC leaders themselves in their speeches acknowledge the contributions of Zim to your independence. When we say this we are not asking anything in return NO, but a few know that Mugabe's NO for assistance to SA was a strategic move to distract the Apartheid govt because already the Apartheid gvt was launching attacks on independent states through its Destabilization Policy to weaken them so they don't support SA. I wish you know how crucial Zimbabwe's borders were when it comes to the smuggling of weapons from Russia into SA.
