YES there is a "Park" on the old Hydramatic,, what you do is, shut off engine, wait like 10 to 30 seconds, and shift into reverse, it will lock,, had a old Pontiac,, the owners manual tells you to do that

I had a 54 cad ,when the engine shut off parking engaged on any gear but neutral....

@usausa 1 the very first car with automatic transmission was Oldsmobile in 1939, Oldsmobile was the prototype for GM , GM sell Hydramatics to Rolls Royce and Ford ( Lincoln ) when the factory burned to the ground on 1953 GM used "Dynaflow" transmission ( Buick division of GM) on Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Pontiac... "Dynaflow" transmission is very smooth, with no issues... Nissan tried to make a transmission as smooth as "Dynaflow" ...Nissan CVT but... they have thousands of Issues...

I had a 55 Star Chief in high school. I drove it from Wisconsin to California when I was in the military, 1976. It got totaled when I got rear ended by a drunk. I loved that car. I have had many 50's cars but my 55 Pontiac was my fave. Congratulations!! I agree park is reverse when the car is not running. The lighted hood ornament is very cool too!

Very cool, I saved one of these from a crusher last year. That light under the hood is neat, it has a coil of 30ft of wire in it so it can come off the firewall and be brought to any tire change in the dark to help, handy if you dont have portable light. Nice rig!

Yes, and with the correct bulb Chief Pontiac's head was very bright. Just saw one in the shop last summer.

My family had a green and white 55 Pontiac. I loved it. The transmission does have park. Reverse is park with the engine not running. There is a down side to the reverse is park thing. If you manage to stall the engine backing up the transmission locks up. We always just used the emergency brake to park. One other thing the brakes do not automatically adjust for wear like modern cars do. This means you have to periodically adjust them your self

Ben, Dwight Maxwell from Budget Corvette. My wife and I just started the same deal. Her's is a 1954 Chevy truck. Same deal She wanted to be a part and work on the build together. Last week we put her first new parts on her truck when really excited her. But I can tell you this from the the month we have had her truck, it will a blessing and a PITA at the same time. She is more interested in the looks of things than she is the mechanical. I wish you and your wife luck! Maybe my wife and I will do some videos for my channel.

Ben, I had a '56 Catalina 2 door hardtop a few years ago that I bought from the original owner with 54,000 miles....Your '55 is is SO much like it. The great thing is that so many of the Chevy parts that are cheap and available will work on this car...put the skirts on it and have some fun! Excellent purchase. You could easily build it into a daily driver. The engine is the same basic block as the 326, 350, 400 and 455. Vintage Air sells units for it all day long... I have a '56 Thunderbird and a '66 Galaxie convertible now...

Hey just FYI I owned a 55 chieftain for 10 years and finally discovered that there is a park pawl, it is engaged with the engine off and the transmission selector all the way down into Reverse. I still would use the hand brake too but its nice to know about that little secret!

…it’s truly a “family affair”….so nice to see your lovely wife…soon to be seen with nvthe streets of Westminster in her two-tone Chieftan post sedan… …my dad owned a ‘55 Star Chief Catalina Coupe in Cream and Bronze… it was a sharp and fast car…and at least once a month, Dad would announce he was going to take the Star Chief out to “blow out the carbon” on I-25 north of Cheyenne… my Mom and my Sister, Sue and I all knew that this was a total ruse…Dad just wanted to indulge his “need for speed”… closeted “gear head” that he was… … I’m sure that you’ll have this one road worthy very quickly, Ben…

Nice. It's great to see that a 4-door post sedan survived and looks so good. This will be a fun one to drive around in, when it's ready to roll. At around the 10:30 point, the little guy is quiet & occupied with something interesting to him. That will be good if he can do that all the time when you 2 are working on the car!

That light is called a Reel Out Light. It should have a cord on it. It you have a flat tire or your working on it at night, you would pull it off and Reel it out to see what you were doing. Sorry to send so many messages, but it's nice to a woman buy and old car, a Pontiac and a 4 door. You could also get a Light for the trunk. It looks you have some options on the car. Rear bumper corner pieces and back up lights. If you have the clear Hood Ornament that would light up at night.

Nice car, we always had Pontiacs and my dad had a 55 coupe company car. I would go for seat belts and a disc brake conversion after all the necessary repairs, the drum brakes on these cars were horrible.

Wow, the baby has grown a lot. Your wife is beautiful and very nice. I don't recall hearing from her in other videos. The under hood light detaches and has a long cord wound inside of it. It's to reach to each wheel to change a tire at night. I seem to recall when the engine isn't running you can put the gear shift into reverse and a park pin engages.

My Dad purchased this exact same car, brand new. I remember this car very well in my childhood. It was a very nice and big car. My mother hit a parked car and smashed the right front fender, then my Dad sold the car and bought a brand new 1962 Pontiac Catalina. What are the odds that your car is the same car that we once owned. Maybe, just maybe.......

My mom's cousin, an old maid, had one just like that she bought new and kept her whole life. Living in Illinois cars would rust fairly rapidly because of the salt on the roads in winter so she would repaint the car with a brush every couple of years. It was one of those cars that looked good for afar but up close was far from good. She passed away in the 1980's and I think they just scrapped the car.

There is a parking pawl it's in reverse. On my Olds I would stop the car, put it in neutral , shut the car off, then pull it down into reverse. It acts just like Park in the subsequent transmissions

The other option you have is the grille bar that crosses at the bumper guards. Looks like the white was repainted , but that ok. It's me. I notice stuff. I'm not picking it apart, I just spot things. Some white paint under the chrome door trim on the right front door. Good luck with it.

The light under the hood that you saw is a neat little accessory. The light slides up and out and is connected to a wire which can spool out to help drivers notice the car on the side of the road. I saw a trace of red on the inside of the light. That red can be restored by repainting half the inside vertically so the red can warn other drivers when the light is put on top of the car. The cord is about 10 feet long. Enjoy.

I've been watching you for several years now Ben. What a beautiful wife and little boy. I think it is so neat that your wife takes an interest in your "hobby". I think the old Hydra-Matics locked in park when the engine was shut off in reverse. This locked the transmission until it was then shifted back into neutral for starting.

so funny...as a young man i never would have looked twice at a 4door sedan, but now i want one...esp something upscale like a pontiac. Something about the solidity that implies security, and the weather resistance, and just simply more metal...plus extra doors to conveniently bring friends and family. of course i'll always have a 2door hardtop - my fav body style, but the sedan is now a want too. Once fixed up, it will be a nice car for your family.

Oooops we got it home and it’s got four doors !!!! Hey at least it’s a great pic I’ve got a ton of great parts for it. There is NO washer hoses to squirt the windows they had vacuum wipers and no washer bottles. You could get that as a add on from a aftermarket guy back then .

I bought an All Orignal 64 Catalina 4 door sedan that was missing the floor mats and had incorrect plug wires and heater hoses. I also replaced the Heater Core. Everything I bought came from AMES PONTIAC. Good luck.
