From policeman to politician, Hong Kong’s incoming chief executive John Lee has his work cut out for him when he takes office on July 1, 2022. In an exclusive interview kicking off the new season of Talking Post with SCMP chief news editor Yonden Lhatoo, Lee promises a more aggressive approach to countering “fearmongering and bad-mouthing” by the city’s critics, and reveals plans for a possible easing of tough Covid-19 restrictions.

hong kong has unaffordable housing because taxes are very low, if hong kong developed all it’s available land and used as much of it for housing, property prices will drop- its supply and demand, hong kong would need to increase taxes to cover up for its loss of money as most of the money hong kong gets is through property.

But the truth is, HK is NOT what it was, work on HK make it the place you say it is, then what can ppl say. It’s not like China will stop bad mouthing the west no matter what they do, so why is China so special it can’t be great unless the world says it is.

I wish he used an interpreter. He articulated his policy visions poorly. Nothing concrete, substantial was offered. Other than high school style phrases which he likely memorized from briefing book to impress journalists about his command of English, he basically said nothing. To proclaim itself an international city, a financial hub, is such leadership quality the best HK has to show for ?!? HK is fanatical about its culture of exquisite culinary cuisine, mahjong, horse racing, not to mention its penchant for high pitched, agitated conversations among its citizens no matter the subjects. They are annoying, aggravating, disturbing to say the least. Beijing oversees everything anyway. Why bother even to say it has its own elected leader ?!?

I hope the best for John Lee and Hong Kong, but there are fundamental economic issues that need to be addressed, and it seems that he is a bit unclear on those issues (brain drain, financial uncertainty, hostility towards foreigner enterprises, etc). His security policies are fine, but economic issues are important as well. One way Hong Kong could reinvent itself would be for HK to make it self a favorable jurisdiction for new technologies like computational finance and crypto. These are things that would require Legco support, but something really needs to change in the status quo to turn around Hong Kong.

@@IcanseeeverythingwhatyouDohere not really IMO. Carrie Lam struggled to connect with Hong Kong’s unrest on many occasions, aggravating the tension and giving bad actors more opportunities to hijack the movement, which they eventually did. We know this because the original goal of the peaceful protests was achieved (stopping the widely disliked extradition amendment). That didn’t stop the movement-instead it got more violent and the demands more vague and subjective.

Hong Kong should take responsibility for the atrocities that happened during the riots. A old hk man was burnt alive for telling them to be quiet on the street, a Chinese guy speaking mandarin on the phone was beating by over 50 “peaceful” protesters with hammers, umbrellas, knives and more. There are hundreds of other incidents where both Chinese and hk people have been burnt alive and stabbed and most likely killed without any media attention.

John Lee has a tough job ahead of him. But after years of dithering, half-baked measures, and a morbid fear of how Hong Kong is being perceived in Western capitals, a resolute and decisive leader is sorely needed in Hong Kong. There's no shortage of talent in Hong Kong, and the Greater Bay Area "大湾区" is a growth engine that Hong Kong's positioning and experience can benefit. The outlook for Hong Kong can be bright. There are going to be obstacles and negativity from the familiar actors who want to destabilize Hong Kong, but Hong Kong people can build a bright future for themselves and their children if there's unity in the territory.

It is extreme inequality. The City with the most Rolls Royces per square kilometre anywhere in the world, is also the one where more than aQtr-million residents live in "cages", literally 6ft-by-4ft-by-4ft. I respect John Lee. He sounds very intelligent, wise and knowledgeable. I hope he succeeds in mending the differences in Hong Kong society. I hope his Minister of Education will examine the syllabues and textbooks in Hong Kong schools. I believe the syllabuses and textbooks designed by the British colonial masters are obsolete but are still colouring the views and lens by which the younger generation see the world and the Mainland. Many of the younger generation have acquired a prejudiced and superior attitude to people from the Mainland, denying their own identity and roots! Of course pleasing Beijing is critical so that John Lee is allowed to stay in power, but maintaining the political neutrality of the former syllabus is very important to ensuring zero bias among students continues to be the case. It's important that people arrive at their political conclusions through logic, rather than simply being told, so that they can see more easily if something doesn't work well and can propose a better solution. In addition, maintaining the 'global' perspective rather than local is very beneficial to HK's status and efficacy.

The way HK's law is now being layed out to cut freedoms back in order to maintain the establishment's order. That is how governance works everywhere, not just in China as no person in power voluntarily gives away his competencies. And that's why human rights are so fundamental, to stop people hungry for power to accumulate too much of it.

A stable and well-run society is the premise of any other things' development. I am confident that in the future Hong Kong can still keep open and well protect citizens' and investors' freedom and rights because this was and will always be hong kong's biggest advantages. but at the same time, no matter what kind of activity shouldn't destabilize society.

The biggest social problem is housing, especially among young people. No one wants to live in a city, yet alone stay happy where you cannot have the right to live.

@@planefan082 we can’t turn back time…the world has gone through an extended period of economic growth, and HK as a major investor base naturally wants to put its money into assets. Thus pricing out us peasants. The strategies before 2012 won’t work anymore IMO.

It is also to protect the people from bringing the mainland attention to them. Nobody wanted to get into Mainland style lockdown after all. Everybody wears mask to reduce covid from spreading and also to not bring the government's attention so nobody get locked down, that way all of us can continue to work. For the sake of being able to work, just swallow your pride a bit this not about ideology or any of that, it is about living a life. Who cares who is a lion and who is a sheep when both are in a cage?
