Jiang's family is very privileged in China and have built up a wealth of over $1.5 billion through corruption. He was more powerful than Hu Jintoa. On par with Xi Xinping. Deng Xiaoping could have been President for life but gave it up, dying in early 2000's.

I laughed and joked about this interview 7 years ago and now I realize how foolish I was as this was indeed a great interview. Both sides demonstrated respect and thrived on the mutual aim of diminishing misunderstanding between people of the two nations. Not to mention that Mr.Wallace threw out difficult yet valued questions which made the interview worth watching. Time has gone and quality conversations like this are so hard to find on conventional medias (if there's any). My respect to 江主席 and Mr.Wallace.

I remember his interviews on American television 60 minutes with Mike Wallace and televison host Barbara Walters. The journalists were baffled how sophisticated Jiang Zemin was in answering the questions even the controversial ones. Though he never gave interview in english, but not many people knew he can speak perfect english and is very fond of english literature himself.

This wasn't an interview. It was an interrogation. The interviewer forgot himself. Journalists deal in facts, not speculation or arbitrary ideas like "heart" like he brought up many times. Even at the end while Jiang talked about promoting mutual understanding, the interviewer rudely continued to cross his arms and act defiantly. The man was literally a guest invited by the president of China.

Like many, he really could not comprehend the underlying philosophies and realities about life and politics of a very different culture. Jiang Zemin really demonstrating patience here, the questions were all emotional stuff, the definition of dictatorship was nothing one could actually respond to but some weird metaphor and the question about the tank man was leading as well. Not really a way of interviewing that'll lead to understanding the Chinese system of governing or what actually went down in '89, but I guess that's American TV.

Actually, it's the exact way of interviewing to understand Chinese governance, or any politician for that matter. Notice the way he was happy to hide behind kind words? Interviewers should strive to make the other party elaborate and defend their point of view. The definition of dictatorship can easily be defended against. The CCP isn't a dictatorship, simple. That's a stupid smoke screen. There is no inconceivable cultural mystique lurking in the shadows & the US's ills stem mostly from its lack of democracy (the Senate which should be abolished, the Electoral College which should be abolished, Gerrymandered districts, irregular & unjust primary rules that allow incumbents to run unopposed, lifetime rather than 12 year SCOTUS terms with 3 judges appointed in the 1st year of each Prez mandate, the ability of states to deprive voting rights to felons (along with a blatantly pay-to-play legal & criminal justice system), private & for-profit prisons, an all pervasive surveillance state where the NSA still in 2024 can watch Americans through their cell phone cameras even when turned off & all their texts (since authorizing programs of project PRISM were never ended but in fact strengthened earlier this year), the fact that elections are sold to the highest bidder, the lack of federally funded education system throgh university level so that all can access the necessary tools to high-level economic & informed political participation, the list goes on and on).

This looks more like an interrogation than an interview. The way Wallace had his arms crossed during most of the interview shows he is not willing to take in whatever Jiang has to say (i.e. not willing to have a conversation). Wallace is just asking questions and he thinks he already knows the answers. Unfortunately, this kind of arrogance is adopted by most of the US politicians/decision-makers as well and really put the US at a disadvantage in a US-China standoff that looks increasingly unavoidable (just think how much China knows about the US vs. the otherway around).

Jiang was no ones fool. He spoke multiple languages (including english, japanese, korean), studied multiple cultures, and was a gifted diplomat and speaker. Im not a fan of his personal politics, but, incredibly intelligent man.

As a Chinese I can confidently tell you he is a good leader, I wish for democracy, I’m against dictators like Xi Jinping. But democracy doesn’t mean everyone selects their leader, in his term most of the people were granted the basic human right, and his contribution to economy of China is just too significant. You might say he’s corrupt and persecuted falun going, but his accomplishment far overweight these flaws .

I didn't see this originally. I didn't even understand why they were showing it until I read that he had passed. This is an incredible incredible insightful view into the Chinese Communist party 22 years ago. I expect from some point many of the beliefs are still the same and some have changed just as we have our Republican party that was on one track at one time and on a completely different track now. Incredibly insightful conversation that has taught me more about China and I think I even understood.

Great interview and very eye opening to how one of China's leaders thought. Very different demeanor compared to prideful western leaders who believe they know what is best for different countries. I find it very nice to share similar sentiments about governing and politics with a man like Zemin even though I live on the over side of the world. If only American politicians would put their pride aside and focus on what this country really needs.

During Jiang’s tenure 93-03, China’s GDP increased fourfold. He introduced the village level local election ( this is extent of direct election china can tolerate btw). Liberal spirit fills the air. Massage parlors were out of control. Not like now. You know what I mean. Deng is good at rural policy. Jiang is good at building up manufacturing bases and reforming state owned enterprises.

China can tolerate a lot, it's persisted in some form or other through the ages. Who knows if China could benefit from regional elections or the like as well? (It works in HK and Taiwan after all). Or maybe not elections but some other form of formal political participation, other than trying to make your way up through the CCP. If the society can factually tolerate more democratic elements is obviously not the immediate concern - of course it could in some way. It is merely the party that deems it more beneficial to its own, and thereby presumably the countries future, and most people nowadays just accept that as true.
