Hi, Jacqui. Actually this area was never land, it is actively forming crust emerging from this spreading ridge between the Pacific and Juan de Fuca plates. These volcanic ridges are formed by the uplift of molten material coming out of the earth's mantle as these two tectonic plates pull apart. That's why these places are so interesting to study.
