Hi everyone :)
I’m back with a video talking about what it’s REALLY like living in Korea long-term.
Again, I love my country and I love being Korean and my intention isn’t to scare anyone off about coming to Korea nor is it to diss my own country!! I hope to bring more light on some topics that are considered “problematic” that people may find challenging to overlook if they fantasize the culture and country. I hope in doing so, it may spark some great conversations and bring about societal change.
My DMs are always open to talk if you ever need to talk or have any questions!

I think its time as women we normalise pretending to know each other when we see another women in a bad situation just walk up and go, “hey, how are you? its been so long, wait… I wanna show you something I got.. can you come with me?” cause honestly as women we are struggling in almost every country and it‘s scary.

I was born on a military base in South Korea in 85. My mother is Korean and my father is Mexican American. As a child i experienced racism, sexual abuse, and bullying/body shaming. A lot of times I feel like some ppl would assume I didnt speak or understand Hangul and would talk crap right in front of me. There were also those that didnt care if I spoke or understood Hangul bc they were going to give their opinion anyway. I cant tell you how many times someone would tell me "you'd be so pretty if you lost a little weight" or "dont play out in the sun so much, your skin is already dark" I read ppls comments about how they lived in Korea and never experienced racism and I wonder if those ppl spoke Hangul bc I know, someone probably said something racist about them but they probably never knew bc it was said in a different language. K dramas paint all Koreans out to be polite and respectful, dont get me wrong, yes, there are a lot that are but some of them can be so rude! Something I feel like no one brought up are the short tempers that are so common among Korean ppl. My Mother vowed never to date another Korean man after her 2nd marriage bc her ex husband had the worst temper!!! I understand why the women blow up, I would too if I was treated the way they are but the men? I dont understand it!!! Something needs to change.

Police didn’t come out even though they insisted they sent officers to search the area for the pricks day later I got a call from the officer about any updates told me they didn’t have any suspects and but they did have a car reg on that night while I was with the woman I started to do some investigating shit on FB and remember the little prick called his mate by his name so I typed in his name on Facebook and location of area and funnily enough there the prick was went on his friends list and there was the other guy told the police the names and what did they do? “That’s great we’ll definitely look into this” Did they fuck nothing happened. To this day when I hear shit like this and the results of law enforcement it pisses me off to no end because if I had not been there this woman would definitely had been kidnapped. This woman was also a work colleague of mine. Sorry for the vent but needed to get that shit out.

@@justine5804 I haven’t been to South Korea yet. I will go in the future to see for myself but I have heard stories about racism so much there. Even your own TV shows have mentioned it so it must be something that happens within the social culture. There have been a great amount of racist experiences that have been described to me or sexual assault cases. I’m from America, so trust me, I’m not judging South Korea or pointing a finger because I know my country has LOTS of issues as well BUT the difference is, in America there are ways to go about seeking justice and forcing people to correct their errors. Discrimination based on race is illegal in America but in South Korea, restaurants and clubs can literally say “No foreigners”….but when Koreans travel to America, they don’t expect to be treated that way. If a store or restaurant in America said “no Koreans” the world would lose its mind. I know these issues take place in other Asian countries as well but saying something like “it’s worse in Japan” is dismissive. Just because it’s worse somewhere else doesn’t mean the problem shouldn’t be addressed or fixed in the country that is currently being talked about. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always wanted to come to South Korea and visit. I’m fascinated by the culture and the food, I LOVE bulgogi and kimchi etc but I think if we talk about the issues and address them, we can make things better everywhere.

Last time I checked RAPE IS ALWAYS WRONG. It's a good policy to stay out of countries where rape is a hobby. One has to ask what is wrong with men???? Yours is not the first video I've seen on this subject. Australia 60 minutes did a whole program on how common gang rape is in Korea. It seems like a terribly sad insecure culture, where conformity is the mindset of the herd. And I experience the "bystander syndrome" here in Hawaii. The first week I moved here I saw a nasty car accident where the offender took off. The girl whose car was hit was damaged and everyone just stood around looking like zombies, doing nothing. So I ran over to her to see if she needed medical help and called 911. I was in shock because where I come from, Boston, everyone rushes to aide or help. Not the case here.....just saying. It really helps to understand the mindset in advance,no matter where you go.

As a Korean male I agree 100% with everything you have said. Worst part is that this stuff is so normalized (cause everyone does this) that the authorities dont see it as an issue (i.e. rape victims are easily dismissed). Be especially mindful of the nightlife there as most Korean males there will be thinking on the lines of "If you're not here to hook up why are you here?". I would also like to suggest any foreigners travelling there to try and not get into conflict with a Korean citizen as the law will not be on your side. I'm from the UK and whilst I was travelling in Australia, a South Korean guy at my hostel approached me and asked to hang out. He was travelling alone and he was trying to make friends with people. His English wasn't very good and I could see that he struggled to start conversations with other people. I wasn't attracted to him but I did want to help him make friends. He suggested on the first day we met that we go to a nearby pub. When we got there, he insisted that he buys me a pint of beer. I declined his offer and repeatedly told him that I don't drink alcohol (I dislike the taste of alcohol) but he bought me a pint of beer anyway. Over the corse of an hour, I took several sips of the beer to be polite but he kept insisting that I drink more. Then when we were leaving the pub, he pointed to a bench outside in a quiet area as he wanted to chat some more. Just as we both sat down on the bench, he forcefully PULLED my head towards his for a kiss. It was aggressive. In shock, I quickly ducked my head and asked him wtf. His personality suddenly changed. He shouted "I bought you beer!" whilst looking very angry and entitled. I tried to explain to him that I wasn't interested in him and that buying me a beer doesn't mean he gets to do anything to me but he didn't understand my explanation and walked off angrily. I was always confused by the fact that he truly believed buying someone a pint of beer is a trade for sexual favours. Now I understand, from watching this video, that he probably believed the false stereotype about Western women. Thank you for the video 🙂

In most Asian countries, even those who are generally less racist and really friendly the perception about the sexuality of people from western countries is skewed. Most immediately will generalize that if you are from a western country, regardless of race you are more likely to be sexually active. Which is kind of true but that stereotype they have is because of the sex tourism in Asia. So they all automatically think we’d be down for s*x easily and casually even if it is by force. I dont think they can, did you see the hate Naeun from apink got for having a phone case that said girls can do anything or something similar? Anything feminist related or barely adjacent will be seen as anti men, as the most infamous types of feminists in korea are misandry leaning, so they assume anything feminist is anti men. I think that is why they also never speak up about many social issues unless they regard children and are not super controversial. Like the one where that little baby was abused by her adoptive parents, and the one boat tragedy. My country isn't as backwards thinking like this in terms of speaking up, but you can go a little into the rural areas and it could be very risky to even insinuate women are not slaves to men. So I can understand the fear especially if it is not socially acceptable to speak up about these things.

In college, I lived in international student housing with mostly Korean men. As a Southeast Asian and a woman, I cannot emphasize enough how much this experience soured my impression of Korean men. I still know several lovely respectful Korean guys, but those are the ones who had deep early exposure to other culture (gyopos, guys who grew up abroad, Queer guys who seek out progressive media). The guys who were born and bred in Korea were so disrespectful to women and got away with it because the media shaped their impression as a handsome charming Korean man. If a woman was pretty to them, she would be sexualized and (worst case) physical boundaries would be crossed. If a woman was not pretty to them, they wouldn't even be treated like a person. I used to think they were my friends. Then our English got better and my Korean got better, and without the language barrier I realized what their uncensored opinions are. I'm not the type to stereotype so I would never write off a person for their nationality, but internally I can't help but be cautious when I meet a Korean man now. And I feel bad for any lovely Korean women who normalize this because they think it's their only option.

Everything she talks about in the clubs in Korea is TRUE. When I visited Korea and went clubbing, I was groped ALOT. It was horrible. I have never experienced that much groping in a club and I’ve been to a lot of clubs. One guy chased us around the club trying to KISS us. One guy grabbed my hand and put it on his pe*is. I was literally dragged on the dance floor when I was trying to leave. I tried to stop a dude from taking advantage of a Korean girl but I was the only one helping her! It was ridiculous. Also side note: be aware of taxi drivers when its late because most will try to over charge you for the ride. Luckily i was with my mom and she knew what was up and called him out.

My latest Korean GF (among many others) would easily generalize and talk stereotypes about certain people groups, and I found that she did this because it’s normal for her to generalize about her own country’s people as it’s a mono-culture. It didn’t seem to compute that other ethnic groups, countries and regions, etc, are not monocultures. In this same line of thought, I find that Koreans don’t want to talk about their own cultural problems in a negative light because image is everything. Ignoring problems, however, is not going to help progress. Finally, you’ll hear Koreans say “ We developed a lot economically, but we still need to develop socially. We just need more time.” My comment is always that you’re not going to change if you don’t focus on what needs to change. Social progress doesn’t come naturally with economic development. That seemed to be the assumption though. (That it was destined)

that is false. korea is one of the countries with the least drug consumption in the world. it is also incredible strict similar to dubai. if you get caught with weed as a foreigner you get deported and banned. as a korean you can get sentenced to prison time. also, rape isn’t nearly as common. the same way as kdrama paints an unrealistic peaches and oranges picture, the same way the haters will throw hyperbole on the dark side of korea. people with no experience can never be trusted. I have lived in korea for over a decade and the only harassment I saw was sadly from foreigners thinking korean girls are easy. koreans don’t think booze is a bad thing. just like the US, Europe and the rest of the world. they do drink stupid much, which is a problem but they also compensate as most koreans work out, go hiking and have an incredibly healthy, balanced diet. rape isn’t a common occurrence in korea and is known to get the strictest punishment next to drugs.

So true. I lived in Korea for 13 years. My wife and daughter are Korean. I was there when there were only a handful of foreign teachers, before the boom, so I've seen the rapid social and economic development and how these changes had an impact on Korean society. I taught at a university and a high demand for English professors and not enough supply to meet that demand, as well as my M.A. degree in English, made it easier for me to find work at the university. But yes, I did run into racism when it was between me (a Latino) and a white man for a position (I also looked for other work during the summer and winter breaks). White foreigners know this and understand this privilege. Many times it didn't matter if they were qualified or not; they had the look and that was enough. What I found interesting was the behavior of the westerners, how they felt privileged and immediately thought they were minor celebrities. Just to stay on the subject of racism (I can talk about so many things, both positive and negative), there was a man who owned an English language academy and employed a woman from Canada. The corresponded through the internet. All the paper work and visa were in order. The man went to meet her at the airport, as soon as she made it past customs, he saw her for the first time. He left her at the airport after realizing she was black. Sad story, but true. Imagine making a 14 hour trek and being stuck in a country where you do not speak the language.

I lived in Korea for a few years, and I remember being really shocked by a comment one of my friends made. I'm male, she's female. She had a boyfriend in another country but we used to hang out all the time. One time we were out doing... I don't even remember what... I think there was alcohol involved, but I'm not a heavy drinker. She drank more than me. Anyway, I just crashed at her place because it was so late when we were still out. The next day she said, "You didn't try to have sex with me." I was like, "Ummm yeah..? We're friends. That's not the kind of relationship we have, are you saying you don't like your boyfriend anymore?" and she just said, "I don't think there's anything I could have done to stop you if you tried to have sex with me last night." Me being male didn't see the world from her point of view exactly, and I thought she was being a bit dramatic. Listening to you talk however it becomes pretty clear that a lot of women have come to expect this kind of thing from guys, especially if they are hanging out after 9PM. On a side note, Koreans DO treat white people differently, but I'm not going to try to say that we have it just as bad as everyone else. I've been to clubs that would let foreign women in, but guys no way. The one time I got a straight answer from a door guy, it was because they believed that we were sexual plague vectors and they felt it was their duty to protect the women in the club from our disease. Pretty presumptuous if you ask me... There's also this thing where we have one role if we are living in Korea and it is extremely hard to break out of it.... teacher. If you aren't a student then people expect you to be a teacher. On the same note, Sadly most of the jobs there come from Hagwons and there are a LOT of shady business owners who take advantage of their foreign employees by breaking countless Korean labor laws because they think we don't know any better. Sadly they are usually right. My employer over there did some stuff and I ended up having to file a lawsuit to get my last 3 months of pay. They got some kind of black mark on their record for the lack of pay and asking me to do things that were far beyond my contract without compensation. The sad truth is a lot of business owners who hire foreigners for their work (so mostly teachers) view us as commodities rather than humans.

Tip for anyone who looks at the travel advisory warning on google before traveling: never trust their crime reporting. They only base their crime evaluation on reported crimes, so it doesnt include a lot of crime you might face especially sexuaI crimes which are rampant in many countries deemed "safe". For example, Japan is listed as one of the safest countries in the world but sex crimes are extremely rampant. They crime is almost never reported because japan has strict defamation laws that prevent victims from speaking about their abyuse even if they can prove it happened. Proof that the thing you are talking about happened does not exempt you from being sued for defamation. So dont trust those. Talk to many people who have lived in the country instead and ask them what to watch out for

If you were to die today, are you a 100% sure you will go to heaven? If no, here is what the bible says, (1) Romans 3:23 KJV [23] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Q1. Do you know what Sin is? Sin is anything bad that we have done. Q2. Have you sinned before? Yes or No? (2) Revelation 21:8 KJV [8] But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Because we have sinned, and God does not allow Sin into Heaven, the punishment is burning hell. What is the way to reconcile our peace and relationship with God? Q3. Do you know the Story of Jesus? (3) Romans 5:8 KJV [8] But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Jesus = God who lived up in Heaven, but he came down on earth and became a man like us, he lived for 33.5 years without committing any sin. Then there were certain people who were jealous and therefore framed him on phony charges, and crucified him. Then he was buried and resurrected on the third day; Now he lives in HEAVEN. Q4. Do you know why Jesus went through all this bloody mess for us? A4. As mentioned, our sin is the reason why we can’t go to heaven, and the only thing that can wash away our sin is the Blood of Jesus. (4) Romans 5:9 KJV [9] Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. According to the bible, the only way for us to reconcile with God is through Christ Jesus’s blood, and not through any works that we do or merits we accumulate, such as water baptism, attending church, or any good thing that we do. The following verses clearly support this. (5) Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV [8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. (6) 2 Corinthians 7:10 KJV [10] For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. In order to get saved, repentance of one’s sin is needed to get saved, we need to be sorry, and repent, with conviction, that we are a wretched sinner. (7) Romans 10:9 KJV [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. If you truly do believe in everything you have heard in the gospel, ,I strongly suggest you to make a proclamation to GOD! You can say it to God in less than 15 seconds !Repeat after this simple prayer, to make sure you truly get saved. Remember repeating this prayer doesn't save you, it's you telling God you BELIEVE THE GOSPEL. Ok, here is the prayer : ‘Dear GOD, I know I am a sinner, as I repent, I put my faith, that Jesus is GOD, and that he died, buried and resurrected, so that his blood, can wash away my Sins. I put my faith in that alone to save me, not my good works. In Jesus’s holy name, I pray. Amen! Congratulations ! Now you are a child of God. Download /Buy a KJV bible (I highly suggest getting a hard copy bible , as one day, it will be illegal to buy, own or even have an online version of the bible) and search for youtube channels like Truthunedited, REAL Bible Believers , The Bible Project, AoC Network, Robert Clancy, Spencer Smith to help you grow , study dispensationalism to understand the bible ( How do we reconcile the verses in the New Testament that tell us that we need works to show our faith, and another that tells us that nothing that can take our salvation away? That's why we need to study biblical dispensationalism to rightly divide the word of God.( study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth, 2 Timithy 2:15) (I recommend the dispensationalism video from Genesis to Revelations by Dr. Gene Kim, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXqXdKebequrhc0) , join a bible believing church. I felt like I was crazy because everyone around me (my Korean husband, friends, etc.) seemed very uncomfortable with calling it out and talking about it in the open the way I am accustomed to as a Canadian / having lived in the US for a long time. While there are many wonderful, progressive and hip young people, I also encountered a lot of ignorance and got the general vibe that many people were interacting with me more as an extension of a living, breathing stereotype and less as an individual. I felt like everyone was expecting me to be fcking stupid, because they would be visibly amazed by the most basic things such as using chopsticks, preferring rice to hamburgers for every single meal, saying literally anything in Korean, operating the self checkout machines at supermarkets, etc. People constantly stare, but no one wants to interact unless they want to use you to practice English. If I displayed any sort of unhappiness or negative emotion, I felt like there was an expectation that I was going to be aggressive. Some people even suggested to my face that the only reason my husband was with me was because he couldn't get a Korean girl and I was always self conscious about the sentiment that western girls are more sexually available and so on. It was always something that was unspoken, but there. I've had people get up and leave when I sat down next to them, had a restaurant change my waiter to someone more "English friendly" who refused to communicate with me in Korean after I asked one question about a dish IN KOREAN, multiple women telling me not to eat anything cold / salty because "a woman's body should always be warm so she can grow babies well" (like that is my only purpose in life???) and so on. I am thankful that I didn't experience anything worse like some of my acquaintances have experienced riding the subway in Korea and I was never refused entry into somewhere on the grounds that I am a foreigner, but these small everyday things do wear at you and make you feel quite isolated and dehumanized. All this said, I had many many many wonderful experiences during my time in Korea and made many wonderful friends! As with every place there are great and horrible things about Korea, and I think that anyone looking to spend extended time in the country should be realistic about their expectations.

As an asian american who's been abroad pretty much my whole life. I've been through some shitty situations. The usual Asian slurs. Whatever. But it's just appalling to see how xenophobic and bigoted my own people are towards others. The blatant discrimination and the bystanders who don't take action. The worship of black people while they look down upon every other ethnicity (even their own). The horror stories I hear. from exchange students and expats are abhorrent to say the least. Thanks for the warning about how Korean's treat Filipinos, or Southeast Asians, in Korea. It's amazing, The Philippines was one of the first countries to send troops over to South Korea to fight the communists in 1950 and this is how Filipinos are treated and viewed. What I don't understand is, how on earth could anyone make any snide racial remarks about anyone, when we all borrow, steal and copy certain cultural aspects from one another. For example, cafes were essentially a European thing. S. Korea is now also known for their beautifully comfortable and comforting cafe culture, but it wasn't theirs to begin with. It was an aspect they found cool from the Europeans. Rap music and hip hop comes from the African American culture and is also something the people of S. Korea find cool and wanting to imitate. The point is, there's no need to make snide remarks about anyone, when everyone has something that would look or be fascinating in someone else's eyes. We're all here on the same planet to learn and to share each other within reason of course, but overall, being racist to people you've never even met, but have taken some cultural gem from just to make your life better, isn't right and makes no sense.

I'm really appreciating you sharing these informations, because I'm moving to Korea next year, and every piece of information are very precious. I have korean friends who lived here in my country, and now, moved back to Korea. And they always say me to keep in mind how different the culture is, and that I'm lucky to have them there to give me some safeguard when I finally move. I have a very lovely and nice friend called Bomi, that here, we used to call her Angela (because she thinks a beautiful western name), and she already founded a place to me, near her house. She says basically the same about the korean guys, that they cross the limits, but, it's not their limits. She are always warning me, because of my appearance, saying "you're a wonderful natural red-haired, with light brown eyes, with this wide hips and legs, very red apple cheeks and freckles all over the place! You will stop Insadong Street instantly!!!" She are exagerating, of course, I'm not that beautiful, but she said me that korean guys go crazy just by the sight of a western woman, and they have that way of thinking about "easy western sex". Yes, here in America we are less careful with this, because it's common young or single people have one night stands, girls go out to drink alone, and have no problems, because nobody care about our private life. But she also warned me that, there's a lot of decent korean guys too, that will respect me, take care to make me feel confortable, and will take interest in me, not only what color my panties are. I just need to be careful, not looking reckless. And also, a I have male korean friends, and they gave a lot of advises too. For example, if a guy approach you in a bar, and he looks sober, just look him with grim, and say nothing, and he will simply realize I'm not interest. But, after some drinks, they will forget the limits, and I need to pay attention. If this happens, before things become dangerous, he said me too "simply go out, call a ride and go home... No matter if are 6:00PM or 2:00AM, simply call a ride, buy some beers on the store before, and go home, watch some funny videos by the rest of night and don't get stressed about this, because will happens a lot". And he said want me to stay safe, and this is the better way to avoid problems. I don't know if this works, but, I appreciate that there's korean men that not approves this behaviour, that knows to respect limits. Well, there's a lot of things I still have to learn before move, and your channel are a fantastic information source. Thanks a lot, and, well, you can see, I will not forget your name so easily... Take care....

God bless you brother/ sister ☺. See you in heaven one day!

I was almost kidnapped in Korea (not by a Korean) but I kicked the guy as hard as I could and ran into a grocery store (I spoke barely any Korean)… but the people in the grocery store immediately helped me and called the police to take down my statement and help me get back to my hostel. They helped me calm down because I was freaking out, and I was so grateful for the help and they took me seriously.

This is very good. I am a white person who always tried to shed a light on this matter ( I was subjected to very intense racism when I attended korean school :/ ) and I HAVE ALWAYS been accused of being racist, because people cannot really see that Korea and Asia in general is not kpop bands and cherry blossom flowers. Thank you for speaking up about this, I think that shedding a light on the matter will make Korean people improve on these matters.
