I've lived here my whole life 45 years. It used to be a nice town a nice place to raise a family. Now it's an overcrowded. Failing overcrowded schools. Nightmare traffic. This girl is full of bull. Cost of living outweighs any salary. Drug infested, crap out of town people. Its saddening what this town has become.

Lifetime Midlander. Narrator shows flat land, long stretches of highway, 18 wheelers and other large work vehicles. Spot on. Rent, spot on. Gasoline isn't cheap just because you work in the oil industry, you're going to pay a hefty price for gasoline. Housing and apartments are scarce, day care for children is scary scarce! Traffic is deadly! Let me repeat that, traffic is DEADLY! Nothing to do on the weekends unless you like to drink. Grocery prices are unreal. Most people go out of town on the weekends in order to have fun. Some of their favorite spots are Austin, Dallas, San Antonio. Yeah, you have to drive at least 300 miles to have something to do. If you're out driving around late some night, be careful that you don't run over the people on drugs. They will walk right in the middle of the road and unless you're watching, you could run over one. Does it sound fun yet??

Corona is dealing a blow to the oil industry. I grew up in Midland and saw during the busts the survivors were those who hadn’t accumulated a big debt and kept their overhead down. This applied to big oil companies and to families. Some didn’t apply this strategy and bankruptcy followed. Be safe!!

I very seriously considered heading out to west Texas for work... a few times. The money sounds great but being away from my family like that, and working 80+ hours per week makes it not quite worth it, IMO. Fortunately, I lucked into an operator position at a local refinery that pays decent and I only work 2 weeks per month (Dupont schedule). I had to swallow my pride and drain my bank account to get the job though. Had to work with a subcontractor making laughable money for a year before I got on with the terminal. I busted my ass to make an impression and fortunately, it worked. Right place, right time, hard work, and a whole lot of luck got me in. I'm thankful but if it ever fell through I would likely start thinking about heading to west Texas again.

Yeah, making insane amount of money without a degree but say goodbye to your life and family time ba cause you’re working crazy hours like 80-90 hrs a week. I work in Odessa Tx as a Physical Therapist assistant. It’s very expensive to rent an apartment. Apartment owners are so money hungry and thinks everybody works in the oilfield. A 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment there is 1300-1500 a month and it’s not even luxurious.

I was born and raised in Midland TX. In the past 10 yrs locals have become more rare. I would say this is one of the reasons this town has become so trashed. We used to be proud of how clean and beautiful our town used to be. We didn’t have homeless people living on the sides of the highway because we were able to accommodate those in need. It’s has become so sad to see what our town has become because people just come make money and leave they don’t care to put back into the community because it’s not their town.

About 10 years ago, I got into a situation where I was in the middle of a divorce and was looking to relocate. I called my aunt down in Midland and she said, "You can find work here easy; a place to live, that's going to be a problem. We have employees that are sleeping in cars (they own a small engine repair shop) because there just aren't any affordable places here."

As much as I loathe there not being much to do around here, I’ve always admired the sense of community we have in these small towns.

I think the reason the trash is everywhere is because of all the wind blowing it around. At least that was the conclusion that I came up with. My family and I lived in Midland for 3 years, from 2014 to 2017. We move there because my husband is in the oil field, And we were trying to keep the family together. I have to agree with you everyone I spoke to prior to movin told me not to do it and that it was a horrible place. Needless to say I was looking over my shoulder for about the 1st year waiting on something horrible to happen , thank God, it never did. We really liked Midland ,the people were nice, The food was good, And the weather was uneventful. Coming from Louisiana that was a good thing ! We had a sun in middle school at the time he had no problems there except for the lack of entertainment for school age kids. In my opinion they could really benefit from a waterpark , or an amusement park, even just a Go kart track or Mini golf course would be nice. The other negative that I found was how far Midland Texas is from , well.... everything ! It really is in the middle of nowhere . So, aside from being in the middle of the desert, and the cost of living being expensive, It's not a bad place to call home, at least for a little while.

The biggest problem I have with the basin, is most of the truck drivers that go there to work, can't drive worth a crap!!! Never seen more trucks pull out into oncoming traffic as if there wasn't any! Part of the reason there's so much trash everywhere, is because it can get windy as hell out there: if trash cans aren't getting emptied into dumpsters or the dumpster lids aren't closed, that stuff ends up all over the place - and nobody bothers to clean it up.

Adam Cox yeah that sounds about right. I got recruited before graduating college by a chemical plant. I was in my way to make 60k a year, but that place was unlivable. It’s a place to get money but not to raise a family. There’s not a day I wasn’t scared of dying in a car accident while I was there, everything is so expensive, especially housing, the people are shit. A bunch of uneducated blue collar worker with too much money in their pockets you do the math. I quit my job, went back to double down on another degree. Best decision I made. The only people who really benefit are people making over 100k a year

Depending on what you're into, Midland has a better quality of life than Houston in a lot of ways. Traffic is almost non-existent by comparison. If you're O&G, there are endless networking opportunities. Close to the mountains and lots of recreation, shooting, mountain biking, etc. There's a small town mentality and people are really nice. There is also a lot of small business love here and the city is working to encourage more economic development apart from just O&G. I'll put up some videos soon but you can follow me on Instagram or Facebook for a peak into the cool shit to do in town.

Born and raised here. Came back in 1983. When oil was at $100 it was not fun living here....too much traffic and crazy driving people. Now, with oil at $60, things are much better. There are still plenty of opportunities and CDL drivers are still needed. You can still make good money here. Schools, drugs, crime on par with a lot of other places so not really an added negative. A lot of dedicated teachers for sure. Roads are getting upgraded thanks to the decreased oil prices which have provided less traffic and more opportunities to improve roads. Your quality of life and your income provide a good life. You can degrade your life with your money anywhere, it's no different or worse here. It's easy to see sunsets here and you don't have to look at the oil slick in the pavement to see a rainbow. Out here you can see the whole thing and appreciate it! Wind is bad and of all the negatives, I have to say I hate the wind more than anything. None the less, with retirement about 2 years away, I'll probably stay in Midland.....good people, quality people, safe living.

I moved to Midland almost a year ago & I hate it. I am from Texas, but Midland is the worst place I have ever lived. Your outlook is positive, but not realistic. Do not tell people to move out here, it was the worst mistake of my life. The city is absolutely disgusting, people are rude here because they are not texan. I moved from Fort Worth and it's a big change. Like she said, there are so many men here. She didn't get out much, but being a girl alone in this town is horrible. Men are very desperate & will do anything to talk to you. Even though you can make lots of money here, you end up spending it here. Since the rent is so high & you see people walking around with their LV purses and luxury cars, you buy into it too. Do NOT move here, it will be a mistake.

I’ve lived there all my life. Was a great place to life. Used to have reasonable cost of living, traffic and crime used to be low. Outsiders would come and make trouble and drive up costs but they would leave with the busts. But during the last bust nobody left so the town got worse, and if you need a really exciting night life or weekend, then yeah midland ain’t for you. Some people will drive down to San Antonio or Austin. It is basically a work town. It’s not a super horrible place to live , but people from out of town made it the place it is now.

I’m 17 and have been a local since 2007 and this video is very well put. The only thing I can say is it’s not a fun place for a teenager. All there is to do is smoke weed and drink. Second, Midland is trashed BECAUSE of so many people coming in and out. The locals take care of their city and want it to be a nice place. Most of these people are temporary and don’t really care about what they leave behind for the people who have always lived here. Another thing is it’s very over crowded. And football is everything here. EVERYTHING.

Basically, Midland Texas is the production side of the oil business. Odessa Texas is the Drilling side. These two towns work together. About 20 miles apart. I grew up in the Oil filled. On the drilling side. I worked for Warton Drilling Company. It’s either boom or bust. All the time. There is great opportunity if you are sincere.

Hi Masie, I stumbled across your site via Schlumberger related links this afternoon and watched a few. Well produced and helpful videos. I spent 30 years in Schlumberger Globally. Midland was and I am sure still is a TEXAS friendly town! In the 90's much cleaner than you show but the shale oil boom and influx has unsurprisingly some negative effects of any boom town in all aspects and some better respect for the local is needed . FYI Schlumberger started hard recruiting of female Engineers in the late 80's and have been leaders in pro female recruitment for for 40 years, in an attempt at balance. If you look at the recruitment videos you can see that continued emphasis, but this is nothing new and it is balanced as the attrition rate is higher. As an FSM in 1991 Mexico I had 5 engineers, 4 female . You do a great job in these informal videos of sending the message that if you strive to be an equal part of the team you will be respected and succeed. Is it a level playing field ? within SLB I hope so. Out-with no, but with the right motivation and understanding of the industry and demands before anyone applies,, then yes now more than ever its Male/Female friendly company. I see some inappropriate remarks in 2-3 of your videos that I watched this afternoon, they do not represent the professional oilfield 2019. Trash will be Trash. Your profile is Hispanic Canadian, you speak French,English, Spanish, have a grounding in the USA Frac intensive Permian Basin, you are Wireline... You are on a great path - Go for it. Oil and Gas will be needed throughout your lifetime , to make energy, materials and chemicals,,, electric will help reduce reliance but cannot provide the modern materials to make, say .. a Tesla. Jump at an overseas opportunity, .. but I am sure they have a plan for you. (oh and put the share price back in the $90s please)! Good luck !

Every city has drugs/crime. The problem is when people like me from south Houston consider going to a population of 150k has a crime rate so high per capita....in Houston it’s too big so if you’re in a pinch police/neighbors/strangers are all right in front of you by the millions, literally. So yeah, I disagree....obviously

Midland is my hometown. Before moving here understand this one thing. The employers will let you go on any day. They really are heartless. Any sign of a slow down and your unemployed in a very expensive city. If you come here you better have a back up plan. What is being presented to the general public is very misleading. 100k a year if you can keep the job for a year. It is very dirty here. Lots of drugs and crime. You will not see the real crime rates published.

@@AZ-js4um I didn’t go to school here. I moved out here a year ago for work, but what I can tell from the schools is that they’re huge! The football games are wild. Football is the number 1 sport out here. The coaches out here will be hard on you, but that is to help build you up as a player. Make sure the friends you pick are good friends, because they do some bad things out here. The oilfield is poppin off right now, you’ll see all different races of people out here. It will probably be a little bit of a culture shock for you, like it was for me. Rosa’s is going to be the best Mexican food you’ll eat out here. If you plan on going into the oilfield right out of high school, take the VoTech type of classes, where they give you training and what not on welding, woodworking, and things like that. Welding classes would be your best shot out here, unless you plan to just start out at the bottom of a company and work your way up like I did. I started out in a machine shop in Houma, Louisiana and transferred to the same company’s shop out here in Midland.
