I worked on a land rig from the time I was 19-24. Double, rotary based out of Illinois but we drilled Illinois Indiana and Kentucky. Anyone who wants to work on a rig, Do NOT be scared. The first 2 months are the hardest but I promise after that your body is used to it. After a year out there the job got super easy and I remember thinking a lot of times “I can’t believe I’m making this much money to do this easy of work. Don’t get me wrong, finish ups are a bitch. But on finish ups I’d always work a 16hour shift on overtime which made it much easier mentally. Sorry for my run-on sentence and my shitty grammar. I just left offshore to go land based. Few things to clarify the biggest differences between the 2. -Offshore requires significantly more vetting due to coast guard regulations along with maritime laws etc. -Offshore also is alot more strict on safety. Almost laughable at times. -Land based will generally pay more, because you will be allowed to work more. Offshore is generally around 50% of the year. Same job from offshore to land was a $20k/yr jump for myself. -Offshore housing is free, but cramped and kind of shitty at best. -Offshore food is 100% free along with snacks and drinks etc. -Offshore is significantly easier in terms of getting breaks. I went from contracting on the railroad, getting 0 breaks, 0 lunch, etc to offshore where (atleast my company Seadrill) there was a 15min break every 2 hours and you get lunch. During the 15min breaks, snacks are brought into break room. Generally things like quesadillas, pizza, sandwiches. Then lunch was usually really good. Like surprisingly good. All in all, I would stick with land if you are looking for money. Unless you get on Overseas work, land will allow for more overall hours in the year along with potential per-diem. Anyone looking to just get started QUICKLY, just apply for "roustabout" positions on almost any offshore job. They hire almost anyone that applies. Easy easy money. 12hr days and you generally only WORK for half. The work is 95% easy. The 5% that is not easy is all in your leg endurance. Be prepared to walk up and down stairs constantly. Idc how in shape you are, carrying tanks from u-deck to heli-deck will kick your legs after chasing tag lines for a few hours. Otherwise very easy job.

Great video, my wife and I are at work out here in west tx around Pecos on the rig as service hands. We are on day 94. We get people all the time asking about working out here and from my 20 years experience all those people are just curious but will never get up and head this way. The only person that ever did was my wife and I wouldn't do this without her here as my night hand. My advise to anyone coming out here is Save your money, dont finance anything, get the crappy truck to start with and buy the next more decent one cash as well. If you have a mortgage start throwing a lot into it to get it paid off fast. My wife and I drive an older murano out here but its paid for, along with our house etc. Use this influx of money to set yourself up to where if the industry crashes tomorrow (and it can) you can go be the greeter at Walmart to pay your electric. So many people come out here, start making 100k plus a year and finance the 80k truck, the 250k house, and the 40k new car for the wife and kids etc, then when the industry crashes they LOSE EVERYTHING. The cash way is harder but its the right way that'll make your time out here actually amount to something.

I only gave the oil industry a couple years. I started as a laborer running OH crane, forklift, acid tank, sandblasting, etc. Worked my way up to an oilfield tech position and even ended up involved in some of the engineering aspects. Was one of a handful of folks able to rebuild our rotating flow control diverter assemblies being that it was in-house designed proprietary tech. First time on a rig I got 8 hours of sleep total in 5 days. I give the rig boys respect where it is due, you have to be able and willing to work hard. But no family time or holidays allowed, and most trades pay better. Oilfield is very anti-family and hit or miss.

Christopher Rivas bro I’d rather have college grinded into my brain than have a job that grinds my body and soul into dust. I make more, work less and get way more time off than these guys. Chem Engineering/supervision is where it’s at if you’re going to be around jug heads 24/7. Besides you’ll live longer(that’s not a joke). No amount of money is worth sacrificing your health and mental well being , especially that line of work. It’s nothing for them to get rid of you on a whim and youre out in the cold with no money or benefits with no guarantee of getting picked up for another project. Hit the books, it’s worth the college debt.
@christopherrivas44035 жыл бұрын
Lemurai no where would this job be for the long haul. This is a job for young men to help build a foundation. I did something similar as a truck driver. Slaved away 5 years of team driving and had $410k. Bought a house, two used trucks, and started my own truck carrier, took online courses in a field that interests me. Young men today are worse off in terms of knowing themselves, in my opinion. 5 years of life on the road taught me a lot about myself.

Lemurai The country needs more skilled workers. The pharmaceutical industry needs you rather than a welder.
@Lemurai5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Rivas brotha, you have no idea how good that is to hear what you’ve accomplished. I wish most of these guys had the same intentions other than wasting their lives and blowing their money on everything from cars to ex wife drama. When id go out into the field with my senior engineer we’d literally try and steal some of the younger guys back and get them into school, my boss had tons of connections around the country to get folks into school on engineering scholarships and truth be told some of these guys were brilliant we got one guy into school that was a machinist, this guy could calculate fitting tolerances off the top of his head and understood pressure and flow rates through pipes (stuff I did). Anyway my point is there’s so much wasted talent lost to these companies in the name of quick money. As far as me getting into pharmaceuticals, there’s no money in that unless you own the company, they pay these research chemists pennies in exchange for long hrs and thankless research that leads to patents they create but don’t own. In that respect you are much better off than someone with that level of education. Plus Uncle Sam is cracking down on big pharma, it won’t be here in a few yrs. anyway, keep it up man! I love to hear people succeed like yourself.

That is why you go to the oil fields just to make good money and invest in assets or start a business. It not a bad idea to work in the oil fields but dont try to do it for decades.
@QueChosen4 жыл бұрын
No faster way to make money, no one has time to go get in debt to get a high paying job. You’re better off going to the oilfield and busting your ass 2 years straight.
@oliwer14024 жыл бұрын
Wtf are you gonna do w that time you’re talking about? Literally NOTHING.
@miguelrobb57194 жыл бұрын
oliwer exactly. People are so quick to try to tell the next man how to live or what they should be doing. Some folks get into trucking just to make quick money and get out and start some kind of business like the other guy said. Do trucking for a year or 2, no rent or electricity, eat sandwiches in your truck and stack that money

I lived in Hawaii and a construction job opened near my house in an area there was little work. I showed up once a week, every monday ready to work and got hired the 4th or 5th week. $32/hr and that was 20 years ago.

I’ve done basically exactly everything this guy has done except im in college, don’t just drive out to west Texas without thinking about it. This work is hard as hell and you’ll be puking out in the sand under the sun if you ain’t ready.

I like the positive attitude and encouragement to help people work who need work. At the same time “get in where you fit in” he said which is true because the oil isn’t for everyone. It’s hard work, and the culture is super ruthless, cutthroat. The ones who are making most the good money kissed a lot of ass to be where their at few are actually very good at their job.

I think people are not seeing that the largest part of the salary comes from overtime. You can get paid $18 an hour and work 80 hours a week and get paid $93,600. Living in the middle of nowhere working 7 days a week 12 hours a day is definitely one way to make $80,000 +, but if you take off a few months to rest at $30 an hour you are losing $12,000 every month so your paycheck can easily drop below $100,000 in 2.5 months of not working.
