A few years ago we were in mid town on holidays and went to buy a $60 sim. Went to a phone/electronic store that was advertising sims with Simple Mobile. They insisted that we use our credit card for payment and kept talking about overseas calls that we insisted that we would not need. When we got back to our hotel we realised that they had charged us $60 plus another $760. Went back straight away and they said they would refund the $760. They never did. We rang Simple Mobile and they knew nothing about the $760. We had to go through our bank to get the money back. We visit every year from Australia and from then on only buy sims from T Mobile. We did see online lots of people complaining about this store and it astounded me that they where allowed to continue trading.

Wrong! Avoid talking to poorly dressed street people and any African American. Basically don't interact with anyone who approaches YOU first. If you need directions ask a cop, go into a business/store as the cashier or pick a nicely dressed person male or female that you approach first. Don't ask someone just standing around, find some going somewhere and stop them saying "Excuse me, can you help me with directions?" They will help you if they can, New Yorkers are helpful.

When we were in New York a few weeks ago, we ran into the Subway Swipe scam but it was slightly different. There was a guy standing next to the 2 metro card machines, and he had the credit card / metro card slots jammed up. The guy asked us if we had cash or a credit card, and then when I said cash, he begged for us to buy him a new metro card with a few bucks on it so that he could get on the train. Thing is, we already had cards, so we needed to fill ours. With the metro card slot jammed, we couldn't fill our card. A quick jump to surface and a block walk (This was the Jay Street and MetroTech station so plenty of stations close by), we went to another station and found the attendant booth and let her know that someone was pulling a scam at the other stop. She said "Big black guy, green coat?", Yup! She got on the radio and said something like "He's back, and this time he messed up both machines." We filled our metro card and got outta there.

This happened to me in NYC. Someone showed up at my apartment at 2am and tried to open the door with a key. I had a bat in my hand to clobber them, but when I looked through the peephole I saw it was two European-looking guys, speaking French. They'd paid someone on craigslist a pile of money to sublet MY apartment. The photos they had was definitely not my apartment (I have no hot tub). Being such a nice guy, I directed them to a hostel in Queens. They later contacted me and said the hostel cost 1/4 what they paid for the fake sublet AND was quite luxurious.

Yes, fake monks. All Buddhist Monks do not go out and ask for money. If they do, it would be for food. But that doesn't happen here in NYC. It is part of a Buddhist Monk practice in other Asian countries. In Thailand, Monks rely on receiving alms for most of their food. The monks leave the monasteries early in the morning. They walk single file, oldest first, carrying their alms bowls in front of them. Laypeople wait for them, sometimes kneeling, and place food, flowers or incense sticks in the bowls.

Two variations on the "Good Samaritan Hustle" described at 4:48, both of which my wife and I encountered at Penn Station while getting ready to board trains -- First, if you're struggling with a bunch of bags and other luggage, someone may approach and offer to help you with them. Second, if you look unsure where to go, someone may approach and ask where you're trying to get, then respond "follow me, I'll take you right to it." This, I assume, was a ruse to get us down into some lonely, isolated area for a robbery. In both situations, we fended the people off by saying stuff like "thanks, but we're okay. We've got it. We don't need help but thank you," in a friendly but firm way. We had to repeat those messages just about non-stop while simultaneously moving toward our destination. But we got through both situations just fine.

Took a day trip to Manhattan during the car show. Went for a walk afterwards. One of those monks came up to me. And handed me a shiny bookmark looking thing with some writing on it. I’m not going to lie I liked it. He told me to keep it but he’d appreciate a small donation. I said sure, had a dollar in my pocket, gave it to him and said thanks. And kept walking. The guy looked pissed. Lol. In terms of parking I definitely suggest booking a spot beforehand. When I go to see a broadway show I use ParkWhiz. I paid iirc $12 for like 6 hours including tax directly on Broadway. If I had just shown up it would’ve been $60/70 + 18% tax.

This happened in the 90's,but it could still happen. A guy I worked with came in one day with a VCR box under his arm, and he was talking about how he got a great price on this brand new VCR. When he opened the box, it was filled with a couple of bricks and newspapers!! He bought from a guy that was had a handtruck by the subway exit. The sucker was so embarrassed. Of course, the scam artist was never there again. Never ever buy anything from anyone on the street. If it sounds too good to be true.....

The apartment tips were great! I wasn't scammed, but the realtor was so responsive up until she got the broker fee. I never heard from her again. SMH

Regarding parking, you can also park in a city-owned lot. I'll usually park at the one at Court Square and then take the Subway to my destination. The rates are significantly lower than at private garages.

The further away you are to “better known places” the less expensive it is. 42 street time square and want water maybe 4$ go the left or right a few blocks and it’s like 1-2$. And a big tip is that sometimes you can lower the price.

oh, and if the price is listed and the vendor gives you a higher price at the counter they have to give you the listed price. this is any state you go to. sometimes the stores dont change the price in the register. you dont need to go to b&h. just go to a chain electronic store.

I’ve heard one tourist ask a street vendor for a pretzel without seeds. One kept telling his daughter to take a picture of the Empire State Bldg. problem was, he was pointing at the Chrysler Bldg. My best advice I tell people coming to NYC.......don’t act like a tourist. Don’t pull out a wad of cash. Don’t ask a stranger to take a picture of you with your cell phone ( or camera ). Don’t eat the street food, you haven’t built up a tolerance to it.

Parking scams have been going on for years. In Chicago they have those same cheap initial fee (signs) and in very small writing, writing to small to see & comprehend when you're driving around looking for parking--they have in small writing the additional hours costs. And of course taxes, which are substantial are either not listed or in that same very small print. I believe the city stepped in at one point to try to change this. I'm not recalling what the end result was. Other parking scam to watch out for in NYC & other cities is the fake valet parking scam. "Entrepreneurs" set up shop as a valet parking service but you give you keys to them & your car is gone. So are the valet parkers when you come out to retrieve your car.

I was visiting first time NYC this summer. On timesqure was approached by this black dude "Hey man, are you from Brooklyn?" Good thing I already knew about the CD-guys, so it only toke about 4 seconds to realise that scam. I actually toke the CD to my hands but gave it back instantly and said "Don't have any cash", and he went away. Funny thing was, after about 30 minutes the same guy opened me again with the same line "Are you from Brooklyn?". I told him: "Hi, i'm from Finland, and still have no cash" and laughed. Hahaha.
