I am so glad to find this video. I loved watching “What Not to Wear”, the clothes were beautiful and did indeed suit the guest’s figures. But my problem with it, as Stacy mentions, was that everybody came out looking the same. This is a problem a lot of us deal with...we find clothes that suit or figures, “normal” clothes, our friends tell us we look good, but we don’t feel like ourselves. When we see someone like Stacy running around in a princess dress with an elven hairpiece, we get that push of encouragement to wear what makes us feel ourselves. Thank you, Stacy! (And I looooove your hair streak!)

The problem happens if all you have are princess dresses and matching headpieces. It's good to know the rules to blend in, dress appropriatly for work or different occasions, bring out the body's best feature, disguise that tummy or heavy upper body, etc. Those white pants with the heels looked cute. I'd probably wear those with sneakers... If you know the rules, you know how best to break them.

Sometimes you need a specific look for a certain situation wherein the people that you have to interact with simply do not have the capacity to accept that it’s ok to wear a Princess dress, and you have to play “normal” for a while because you are hoping for a certain outcome which would not be possible if the Princess dress were worn. Honestly didn't think of that because if I were in a position where I had to do things I morally didn't believe in, I would be out of there, contract or no. I'm a nurse, and last year I broke a contract at a job because I didn't agree with what I was being asked to do. But I understand that not everyone thinks the same way. She might have been afraid that she wouldn't work again if she did that. My wife watched that show and loved it. I was always politely invited to leave the room during it, because I couldn't stand Stacey and wouldn't keep my trap shut about it. 😏

Most of the time they didn’t love the clothing they had. They were hanging onto it to because they legitimately felt that was the best they could do and weren’t looking in the mirror nor believing in the reflection of those who love them. They were allowed to keep items that had special meaning. They did not always buy the most expensive items either but were encouraged to invest in some pieces that would have the most versatility. I think the show was great at the time it existed and I find it amazing that Stacy literally created two whole versions of herself It almost seems like the woman she was on what not to wear (who was dope in her own right) is a completely different woman than she is now, both equally amazing but different. That is a fucking impressive feat.

Her reaction to my photo: "Eww, Dad, that hair! Those glasses! You look so much better now than you did then." And now, Judith, like you here in my 60s, I definitely feel better too. I’ve always felt that what you wear is supposed to be an expression of you, and that it’s supposed to make you happy. I loved watching What Not to Wear, I loved the advice on colors/shapes that are the most flattering on people, but I often felt sad at the fact that a lot of people’s quirkiness and individuality felt lost by the time they got to the “big reveal” at the end. It never occurred to me that Stacy was suppressing her own individuality in the process. I’m so glad and inspired by the fact that she’s finally decided to be free.

I remember watching What Not to Wear with my mom when I was a kid, and feeling sadness and shame when she encouraged me to follow the fashion "rules" Stacy and Clinton set out. I understand now that my mother was trying to protect me in the hopes that fitting in would solve my problems, but really, feeling free with style is what's giving me so much joy now; and I'm super grateful to get to rediscover that expressive side of myself today. My mom would always talk about calling them to come “help” me. I was just a little skate punk kid. It’s weird watching this now-she used to make people through away sentimental clothes and that part always hurt to watch.

Yet there really are some basics that count. Ex. If a woman has a "larger" chest (I used to laugh at how they used that expression, you know, larger than what?), there are styles that will be more flattering than others. Fashion is about style, at least I hope it still is, and you know, if a woman is 5" 2' and weighs 165, she will look shorter and heavier if she wears those (God awful) cropped pants with the voluminous legs. Colors matter, too...I look hideous in orange...it's a beautiful color on some people. And so on. I'm slim, have rather narrow hip, but a "larger" chest...I don't want to look top heavy, you know, like a marshmallow on 2 toothpicks. So, I don't wear skinny pants with a big, flutter sleeved, flared out top. There are rules, that is, if you want to wear flattering stuff.

Rashone I think the idea is where does that idea of flattering come from? What exactly is this one standard that we’re all trying to balance our bodies to? And why that body type? If you genuinely feel good in the choices that you feel are more flattering then that’s awesome ❤️ I think it’s just about questioning, are these choices I’m making my opinion/what would bring me happiness or am I following some rules about what’s “flattering” that I picked up along the way? Then the choice is up to you, but it’s nice to question it and explore your motives a little!

I also have a white streak in front that my dad and grandma also had. ​@@BrittKatSlat Wrong. Not everyone goes gray by 50. You don't know what you are talking about, so no one should trust you, "hunny". Also, gray streaks are caused by trauma, usually in childhood. She has had hers since she was young and mentioned on a WNTW Q&A that she did not remember when it first showed up, which is probably true. I have two friends with a white/gray streak. One of them drowned but was revived when she was 3 years old. Right after, she had her streak and it remains. She tried to dye it but it does not hold dye. The other one was stabbed as a teen and noticed her streak when she got out of the hospital.

I loved What Not to wear as a kid. I admired Stacy London so much! But at the point I started to start dressing the way I just wanted to dress, I saw What Not to Wear as a box. Don't get me wrong. The people really needed help. Their stylewas usually an extension of sadness of trauma. But I got tired of seeing them turn people into clones of themselves. To see that that wasn't completely her is sad but kind of refreshing. I LOVE her current style. THIS is iconic.
