Barry Odom isn’t a bad coach. I think he’s a decent fit for Purdue whose expectations aren’t that high. Should be around 6-6 every year. If that’s good enough for Purdue then he’ll be there for awhile.

After the season we just had, people underestimate how happy we would be to just be a bowl contender. Priority # 1 is building back stability and respectability for a program that played in the B10 championship game 2 years ago. I get it, it was the B10 West, but you still had to be a respectable program to get there.

This is SO ignorant. Odom is an experienced coach that can raise a mid-level program. Do you REALLY think we can attract a "glamorous" candidate right now? This needs rebuild by a coach that has head coaching experience. Brohm and Tiller had the SAME kind of resume as Odom. And Odom ran a Mizzou program IN THE SEC! It's not easy to win at Mizzou either. As for Purdue being "little brother to Notre Dame in the state". First, Indiana football is trash. Second, ND doesn't "compete" with Purdue or IU for Indiana favor. They don't care. And our campus is gorgeous. Clearly, you haven't really gone there. It's hard to win at Purdue because it's in a football weak state, it's not THE state school, and it's in one of the toughest conferences. Odom knows how to navigate this kind of program in tough conferences and he develops players.

Pump the brakes Scott. Barry made one bad decision that changed the trajectory of his coaching career. He hired Derek Dooley. Nick Saban made that mistake too, and retired. Jason Garrett got fired after hiring Dooley. Derek is followed by some sort of toxic sorcery of losing football. Let’s not forget Barry gave Josh Heupel a chance! I think he will do well at Purdue. Though I think he should’ve waited for a more football focused school.

As a Purdue alum, the idea that Purdue should be aiming for the college football playoff is a frankly ridiculous take. Football isnt that important to us. Success is winning more than losing and occasionally upsetting a big school. Playing for a Big10 championship is pretty much the ceiling. The school isnt willing to waste money and integrity on the things you would need to do to make the playoffs consistently.

Who the F is Scott Fisher and what makes his opinion relevant to anything? Odom's background is very similar to Joe Tiller's when Purdue hired him from Wyoming, or Jeff Brohm's when Purdue hired HIM from W. Kentucky. Walters was the flashy, rising star; had just been the national assistant coach of the year as DC at Illinois. it looked good on paper and was the type of hire Fisher would approve. it wasn't necessarily a bad hire, but wasn't the right person at the right place at the right time. So Purdue goes out and gets one of the best available people that fit the mold that HAS worked for them in the past and this numb nuts rakes them over the coals for it?

I don't think this job is as tall of a task, despite what everyone is saying. Purdue could have easily gone 5-7 last year with a decent coach (also consider Purdue played 5 playoff teams. Arguably the toughest schedule in the country). If Odom is able to retain some key players and bring in some experienced transfers, I don't think 6-6 is a tall ask for next season. Wouldn't be a shabby turnaround season in the NIL era.

When has Purdue ever got the flashy recruits? I'll answer, never. The stars all came in as overlooked 3-star guys who was developed by the Purdue system. Aidan O'Connell was a walk-on, and Drew Brees came in deep on the depth chart. The argument of "won't get flashy recruits" is stupid. Walters got more 4-star guys than Brohm. We just need a solid coach, and sometimes lightning will strike.

Feel bad for Pur. Pretty prestigious school and they are a team i root for. Being an Oregon State Beaver, I know what it's like to be in a state where your rival is incredibly well funded(Notre Dame-Pur, Oregon Ducks-Oregon State. Feel a kinship with Pur. My thought for them is the same as for my Beavers. Stop doing what got you here. Stability hires, family atmosphere, talent development(code for future portal product). All that is good but you are heading for 6-6 best case scenario. One must innovate and do what no one else is doing in order thrive(not barely survive). Stop competing and start innovating. Create a new offensive scheme, 2 QBs on field. Interchangeable wr/rb/qb. Trick play every 4th play. Do what no other offense does and you have no competition. Spread NIL to all starters not just best 2 or 3. The ducks innovationed 19 years ago going to no huddle and then adding zone read to it 2 years later. They innovated and had no competition. Hard work, family atmosphere, development, all good. But nowhere near enough. Innovate and differentiate. Morph into what no other team dares to do. And you will no longer need to compete. Competition is a by-product of not innovating. Intellectual laziness. Competing is an overused and stale mental montra. Not to mention, it's exhausting. Work hard? Of course! Family atmosphere, absolutely. Innovate your form? ABOVE ALL!!! Stop trying to "get better every day", and start outscoring your opponent by a different Innovate approach.

Every big 10 school gets a huge amount of money for being in the conference. It is purdue that chooses not to invest that money back into the program. Eventually, when the schools start trying to figure out how to get bigger slices of the pie, and figure out that having less mouth to feed is the answer, purdue will be on the chopping block. They better start investing some of the millions they receive back into the program

Brohm did not recruit that well at Purdue. I think part of the reason he left when he did is he saw how weak the roster was. Purdue finished last or next to last in the conference at recruiting during his entire tenure. It's amazing he accomplished what he did. His best QB, AOC, was a walk-on. Odom did much better recruiting at UNLV than Brohm ever did at Purdue. If you're going to have such a strong opinion you should do some better research. At the end of the day, no one knows if this is a bad hire. Time will tell. If he brings Marion with him, I like the move. Flashy doesn't mean good. Just look at Curt Cignetti. Worked out well for IU.

I think you can do a lot worse than Barry Odom. He won 19 games in 2 years at UNLV. And how do we know these "splashy hires" have any interest in trying to revive a program with the NIL and other negatives at this school? We may be seeing a similar situation at North Carolina where multiple coaches have already declined to talk to the school about the job there and now they are considering a 72 old ( they just fired a 73 year old!) former NFL coach with NO COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. Well, it is a so called "splashy hire". It is important too that schools get their new hires in place quickly because the transfer portal just opened up yesterday. Purdue has done that. @@joshzacher3343 Thanks for the reply. I found and watch the press conference. I don’t want to be too negative, but he was cagey, evasive, and did not directly address the conduct of his staff, what he knew as the head coach, and when he knew it. It was a canned response rather than a reflective answer. Odom’s UNLV staff inserted themselves improperly into a process that was supposed to be brokered directly by their collective. Odom’s staff pulled a bait and switch on Sluka, only to then add insult to injury by stringing him along week-by-week with promises of payment of money that was promised and not delivered. Then, for good measure, they slandered the kid on his way out the door. It was a shady move to pull on the wrong kid. I firmly believe this four year player and Holy Cross graduate over Barry Odom’s staff. If time shows that Barry Odom doesn’t run a clean program, we can’t say that we weren’t warned.

@@Mojo702As a UNLV fan, he would of been VERY secure here even as a 6-6 on off years without breaking a sweat and on up years perhaps even locking in the CFP Spot for the G5. We tried offering him 3-4 mil but couldn't come near what Purdue offered him. Not sure if he can lock a CFP spot considering the B10 will only have 4 spots max.

With as cutthroat as college football is, I am surprised more coaches don't stay where they are beloved and make less, but have less pressure ans way more job security. Mike Norvell was beloved in Memphis for example, but FSU can't get rid of him fast enough, even after a 13-0 season. He would still be welcomed back in Memphis by most of their fans very willingly. I wonder if you could have an honest conversation with him or scott frost or Tom Herman etc, if they could go back in time if they would stay or go. I realize that every coach usually has an ego and wants to be the best, but is it better to be a head coach at a fairly successful group of five program for 10 years or a head coach for a power program for 4 years and then get fired and go be an assistant somewhere and job hop for the next 6?

@ I assume he is hungry for the BIG college football game day atmosphere, NIL money and playing against iconic schools like Michigan and Ohio State. Let's see how he does, not sure if he'll be on the CFP path like he was at UNLV considering the tough competition in the B10.

Barry Odom is a much more flashy hire than Brohm was. Your deranged bro. Purdue is a 6-6,7-5 type of school if everything is great and Barry Odom will give them that. Be grateful not dumb 😂😂😂

@ScottFisherCFB i don't think most people view him the way you do. You described how you viewed him, but as you can see, in the comments, most people view him as one of the most successful coaches the last two seasons, turning a traditional doormat into a near playoff team.

Seems funny he was interviewing for other hc jobs around the country and now since Purdue hires him he says it was a dream come true give me a break money talks. Purdue wins 3 games next year and fans will think he's the greatest...bad hire he reminds me of Danny Hope.
