New Mexico is one of the first U.S. states to drug test its public schools' wastewater for a range of opioids and stimulants. Wall Street Journal reporter Sara Randazzo joins CBS News to examine some of the data released earlier in December.

There are trace amounts of pharmaceuticals and other hazardous chemicals in the drinking water across the country bc water treatment plants are not equipped to completely remove them from waste water. Therefore, the test results in these schools may not be an accurate representation of the amount of illicit drug use that's occurring there.

I would hope that they are also checking the drinking water coming through the tap to compare those waste water results and make informed conclusions.

@@BrooklynBaby-1”Drinking water” is what you flush with and wash your hands with. It’s also what you drink sometimes, the chemicals there in entering your body, some passing into the waste water just as they would if those chemicals had entered your body through some other means.

During the Reagan administration, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company (amongst others to a lesser extent) lobbied to relax the standards for tap water purification. It was billed as “fiscal responsibility” made the water out of the garden hose taste weird and have things in it like benzene, and resulted in untold billions in revenue for the bottling corporations as they became the only way to obtain moderately safe drinking water. Just another win for the common person, right?

I wonder how much of that wastewater belongs to the staff and how much of it belongs to the students. I've been on this planet through eight decades, I chose to homeschool my children over 30 years ago simply because I grew up with and know way too many teachers personally! There was no way in hell I was going to let any of those people around my children unsupervised.

Since they implemented detectors at our local high school this year, they've found kids vaping weed in the bathrooms daily. One case was a staff member (an instructional assistant from the county ed office). Each time, the cops and the parents are called and each time the parents say the same thing: "It must be a mistake. Not my kid!". SAD.

As someone who has followed toxicity in the world around me, I can confidently suggest two specific concerns for people to understand the magnitude of US water quality: first get current chromium-6 stats for the nation (or even just your county and surrounding counties) and then compare those numbers to the numbers used in the Erin Brocovich debacle and second: gather current lead stats for the nation (or just your personal and surrounding counties) and compare those numbers to the crisis of Flint Michigan. Then consider the fact that counties can test over the legal limit of heavy metals BUT IF a neighboring county is under the legal limit of that contaminant, the defaulting county can buy the neighboring county’s difference and then they can claim their levels are within the legal limit. A friend who worked for the government told me about the buying of under limits and called it something but I can’t remember what it’s called, it either sounded like cat something or the word cat was in the term used to define this very common and deceptive practice that affects what people see on paper while absolutely nothing is done to the contaminated water.
