Alisha, could you eliminate the that from the sentence? 5:18 / 13:29 Show me that you can help me. F. ex. Show me, you can help me. Show me, but what? In the 1 ex. the that, you can simply exclude the that from sentence, right?

You might want to describe relative pronouns the traditional way The rules for transitive verbs • The girl that I saw. To see somebody Saw who? the girl (Direct object expressed before the verb) • The pizza that I ate. To eat something Ate what? the pizza (Direct object expressed before the verb) • I knew that he liked pizza. To like something Liked what? pizza (Direct object expressed after the verb) • I don't know ... to eat To eat something To eat what? It is NOT EXPRESSED BEFORE OR AFTER THE VERB. The direct object will be expressed in the relative pronoun WHAT is the relative pronoun for transitive verbs. IT TAKES THE PLACE OF THE DIRECT OBJECT ------> So if you have a transitive verb and no direct object expressed, the direct object is expressed in the WHAT. Otherwise if the direct object is expressed before or after the verb, you simply need a that to link sentences (THAT is a subject relative pronoun)

These examples are noun clauses, not relative clauses, because their functioning as the direct objects of 'said', 'know', and 'show'. Therefore, 'what' and 'that' are NOT relataive pronouns, and as far as I know, 'what' is NEVER used as a relative pronoun. Relative clauses function to modify nouns or noun phrases. The information can be unnecessary (non-defining) or necessary (defining) for the identification of the noun. EX: California, where I was born, is on the West Coast of the United States. -- non-defining relative clause EX: The state where I was born is the biggest in the Union. -- defnining relative clause
