I think peer programming is very useful when one person is skilled but not in the zone, and one person is new and willing to learn. Or two persons just so compatible their productivity complements each other. They need to be facilated by their own will, which is kind of difficult.

I do this on an almost daily basis with some of my co-workers. I literally have to tell them where to move the cursor, what to click, and letter by letter what to type. It's fucking insane. Even saying something like "index the array at position x" they literally can't do with me explicitly telling them "Open square bracket, the letter x, then closing square bracket" It's disgraceful but those people still receive paychecks. I bitched multiple times to management about it but as they still get their work done (by having me literally do most of it by baby feeding them) they aren't firing them. But of course I can't say no to "helping" them that's expected of us to help our co-workers. it's an absolute fucking joke. The even "funnier" part is these people have YEARS of "experience".

unless both people bring unique and relevant skills to a task that is difficult for both to solve, I don't think it's truly 'pair programming'. If one person knows a lot more, it is teaching at best, and remote control fingers at worst. If both people find the task easy to solve, it will turn into nitpicking about which programmer's style is better

If you are pairing with the wrong person, this is scary close to how it is. You try to teach them by having them control the mouse and keyboard while you tell them what to do and instruct them along the way. But they're so lost that you just take over and do it all yourself. I had one person who called me over to "help" him fix a bug. It ended up with me at the computer doing all the work while he played games on his phone. Literally. I am not making this up. I never helped him with anything else after that. I later learned that this was his way of getting others to do his work for him.

I would like to get more experience with pair programming. I remember being a fresh summer intern who got paired up (coincidentally) with my University teacher. I was anxious and we were doing a full-stack task while I was mainly back-end proficient. Thankfully, I am very good at touch-typing, so I could quickly translate his intentions into code and learned a lot. I would have gotten even more out of it if I didn't think this was a test. The other time I did pair programming I was already an experienced middle programmer who had a fresh junior in the pair on a hobby project. We worked using the pomodoro technique and he helped a lot with the bigger picture while I was focusing on the fine-grain details.

Hmm for junior engineers: keep in mind that some senior engineers will try to exploit this stereotype to excuse away why they’re not finished with their stories. Make sure you interact with multiple engineers on your team so there will be a general good perception of you working hard. Avoid asking questions to seniors who are struggling to finish their own work. Recommended: before pairing, ask the more senior engineer what your first step should be or what you should read about (esp documentation) so you can be prepared for your pairing session. If a more senior engineer is insisting that they do your work to hurry it up, that’s their prerogative and respect their seniority but fight for your right to try...even for 20 min will help you understand the problem so much better and helps you learn more from the pairing session. . Remember many engineers are not teachers so don’t allow their judgements to affect your learning process.

Ok...that video was funny! Those scenarios happened to me in mob programming sessions but since we have a retrospective at the end of the session we decided that commanding how to do every shortcut and every coordinate distracts from the main goal of the driver. So basically ease up on the frequent detail and have patience and throw in some shortcut improvements for the next day or less frequently.

I feel so blessed, that my pair programming is nothing like that. As a junior i do get things done and get nice and comprehensive feedback. It's a great way for me to get things to know i wouldn't normally step upon and get that wider angle of view(what and how things can be/are done).
