That's why I don't get why the same people bash on Epiphone. They are the same Les Pauls, same design, same materials. Only very slight detailed differences that have 0 effect on playability and sound, which is the reason you're getting a guitar in the first place anyways. And with all that Gibson hardware and tuners you're still getting it $4k less. Flamingo is totally right and spot on with his assessments. People are idiots.

I have purchased 2 Epiphones this year (a Marty Schwartz 335 and a Les Paul Studio). The LP was $550 and the 335 was $750 (Normally the 335s are $900, but this one was reduced since the case had a scuff). Both are wonderful guitars. I purchased 3 different Epiphones in 2020 during the pandemic, wasn't impressed with the sound quality, and ended up returning all 3. I then purchased a 2021 Tangerine Burst Gibson LP studio which I really liked for $1500. After discovering the Marty Schwartz 335 (I love the sound and feel of big body semi-hollows), I decided to try one out and was blown away at how much better the sound and quality of Epiphone guitars had become in just the last few years. At the same time, Gibsons have steadily increased in price until they have simply become too expensive for me to even think about owning. I have wanted a Gibson 335 for a few years now, but $3700 is just ridiculous. The 355's are even more. BUT, now that Epiphone has an Inspired By Gibson / Custom Shop 355 in white for $1299 with a case, my mouth is salivating again. I've watched a slew of videos on it and tried one out in person last week. The quality and sound are simply amazing, so I've decided to pick one up very soon. The $1300 is not something I even thing about. A Gibson BB King Lucille 355 is now $7k. Oh, the pain. Gibson has become the brand for CEO's who have too much money, and want something pretty to put under glass in their office to stare at all day. Bars and venues have cut back on what they pay gigging musicians lately, and KZbin and Music on Demand sites are a long slow slog towards financial independence. Earning enough to afford a real Gibson these days requires a lot of belt tightening and pain. This is where the IBG Epiphone line is helping musicians afford quality guitars on a budget. They are still selling the $400-$700 entry level Epiphones, so no one has been hurt by not being able to afford a decent entry level guitar. The people who seem to be upset are the ones that have paid $2000-$5000 for a Gibson (guitar name here), and are now afraid the high end Epiphones will undercut their Gibson investment. That may be so, as I recently sold that Gibson Tangerine LP Studio for a $700 loss recently. Guitars aren't selling right now (new or used), and people are looking for value in their instrument - and don't care about resale because there IS NO RESALE. So with that being the case, isn't the smart bet to buy a Epiphone with Gibson Custom Shop parts for 1/3 the price of 'the real thing'? I guess if you are made of money, you'll disagree, but if you're a gigging musician like myself, you just want the best guitar for the lowest price and highest quality you can get - and at this moment, that's Epiphone's IBG Custom Shop line for $1300.

Few people seem to realize that the $1399 Epi's are the $800 model + Gibson pickups ($300-$500) + good electronics (~$20) and a hard case (~$200). All that mostly adds up to the price of the individual parts. They are charging more...but giving you more as well. I got one of those Kirk Hammet V's recently and it's a great guitar.

I have two recently built Epiphones. One is a red Broadway, and the other is a 150th Anniversary Sheraton. Both of them are very well made guitars. I struggle to find a flaw with either. They play great. I'm happy with the price I paid for them. The Chinese factories making these guitars have really stepped up their game over the years and are now competing very well with USA & Japanese builds. My first experience with Epiphone guitars goes back to 2008 and the Chinese guitars left a lot to be desired. There is a night & day difference these days.

No complaints here about the direction of Epiphone with the inspired by Gibson line. The CustomBucker pickups alone are worth $500. Placing these pickups in a guitar under 2k is awesome imo. It's not like Epiphone has abandoned their entire lineup. So, if you want a more budget friendly Epi, there's plenty to choose from. But, if you want the Gibson hardware and the incredible CustomBucker pickups at a cost significantly less than Gibson's counterparts, what's not to love? Way to go Epiphone. I'll be happy to hang a 1959 ES355 Epiphone inspired by Gibson next to my 1964 Gibson ES335 VOS reissue.

I think you are right about saying that the people complaining to have more for less! I brought 2 Epiphone guitars in later years, one like yours, the 50's inspired by Gibson in Gold top and a magnificent 335 with the licensed Bigsby last year and both are very good guitars. But I think that those new models look very gorgeous!I also think that the price they ask for the new models is fair with the things they add, like the best pick-ups and the case, it's worth the price! I will wait when the price go lower but don't need that for now and I will go with the Les Paul Custom, also a part of the new line. Just a little mistake in your video, it's not a 335 in the new line, it's a 355, the equivalent of the Les Paul Custom in the ES line. Good video, very interesting! 😎

YOUR AIDING IN THAT! Your a tool dude.. These epis aren't what you think they are, they cost Gibson roughly $89 dollars to produce in China as in China they don't have workers compensation, insurance and they pay these people nothing gibson also takes advantage of being an American company so importing costs them next to nothing.. Let that sink in with materials and labour it cost $89 usd to produce one guitar and your going to pay $1200 😂😂😂😂😂

Most guitar companies use CNC machines to make their guitars. There's nothing wrong with that. Hand-made stuff is a bit overrated. It's cool, but if I can have a machine do it right every single time and pay a decent price versus a cool story if a dudes hand slips and makes a funny mark, which somehow adds another $1000 to the price, give me the CNC machine made thing all day.

Changing the shape of the headstock costs almost nothing, just some tweaks on the machines at the factory. Pots? It probably costs them a few dollars for upgraded pots. Pickups mostly cost the same to produce unless they are handwound ECT. I don't even think Gibson's pickups are hand wound anymore. Does anyone think that these upgrades warrant the prices they are charging now? So man, love the video and just subscribed as a result. Although I agree with the general idea of what you are pointing out (I think), I am not entirely sold on the Epi strategy. I didnt think of myself as a complainer until I watched your video. I have been leaving comments to the tune of WTF Epiphone??? Let me first say that I am an Epiphone fan. I have two very special Epiphone guitars. I also have 3 Gibson Les Pauls so I know the difference. Here is where I sit with the recent offerings by Epiphone - I think they are moving a bit out of their lane and I really feel like its by Gibson design. Gibson prices are blowing up and it feels like the Epiphone pricing is going up to somewhat validate paying Gibson prices. Now, this is complex of course because its more expensive to build guitars in general just based on inflation (not a political statement - just the current reality), and Epiphone is upgrading these higher end guitars in their line - but - at the end of the day, they are still Epiphone guitars. As an example, I bought a Epiphone 61 reissue Les Paul SG (with the Gibson collab upgrades). I paid about $750 for it (discounted) 2 years ago. They are now $950 new - no change to the guitar, just a flat out blow up in pricing. I would be lucky to get $600 for it used. On the other hand, I sold a 2011 Gibson Les Paul Studio that was $850 new for $1100. Here's the rub - I am finding that the price increase is just not worth it regardless of the upgrades because the dont age well in terms of value. I thought the Epi Greeny was actually genius - Signature guitar with Greeny pickups AND the open book headstock - ok, unique, special, maybe worth it - now all the new releases have the open book which just dilutes the uniqueness. Love the video man and look forward to catching up on your content and your future content - for me, I will wait out Facebook Marketplace and pickup one if these for half of retail. Cheers!

My only concern with these new Epis is the neck. It's a one-piece, as opposed to a scarf joint like on the older Epis. If they use the same grade of wood and cut it the same way Gibson cuts theirs, it's got less chance of warping/twisting. However, if it's softer, less dense wood, I wouldn't even bother. Otherwise, a guitar that's basically a Gibson with a different word on it for thousands less? I'm in.

I think that most of the people complaining didn't try them out. The same people will buy a $1300 phone though lol. Epiphone is not holding a gun to your head, you don't have to buy it lol. I like what Epiphone is doing and I own 4) Gibsons and one Epiphone that I kept and upgraded it. Now they have the proper headstock, electronics, parts, MOP inlays, and the list goes on. I might even go for that Epiphone ES-355 in white! it has custombuckers in it! The only other guitar that I own that has that is my Gibson Custom Shop R8 for much much more money. You don't have to be a fanboy of anything, If I like it I'll buy it. As long as we play guitars is all that matters.

I immediately jumped on the new Epiphone LP Custom at the full $1299 price. Childhood dream fulfilled. I've wanted a Gibson LP Custom in Alpine White after getting to play one for about 10 minutes back in 1998. I always thought I'll get one when Im an adult but you I can't justify the price as a hobby guitarist. I tried the different variations of Epiphone's LP Customs and they're wonderful but they looked and felt like their own thing and not THE thing. The 2020+ model was really really close, but I never could pull the trigger. This release hits all the high notes with the updated neck shape, open book headstock, pearl inlays, gibson pickups, and hard shell case. This premium lets me mark the LP Custom off my bucket list. It shows up on Friday and we'll find out if it actually meets my expectations, but I think it's going to be perfect. I can take the $4k I saved and get a Epiphone Greeny and 59 Standard.. and still have more money burning a hole in my pocket.

I gave up on les pauls after graduating through all Gibsons up to a custom shop R0. Just didn't play them enough...too heavy an un-lapfriendly. Saw a '59 Epi for $900 recently and bought it because I had to know why an epi is $900. Absolutely loved it and bought a second one in a different color. Just ordered the 355 ($1300) and cannot wait to get it. Epiphone has hit a HOMERUN here. Not sure if that speaks to their profit margins on them since these may be intro lost-leaders, but the buyers will certainly come once they experience what I have. I suspect these Epiphone "elite" guitars will soon be considered equivalent to eastmans, prs S2s etc.

If the pickups don't matter and the wood doesn't matter what does matter? If you can't hear the difference, it might be your ears not discerning the difference in frequency response. I will grant you the amp and even more the speaker have a massive influence on what you hear but the signal from the guitar is the tone generator. I do agree that better guitars cost more. 1299 is not bad for a nice 335. A used gibson studio model will be $2K on the low side and come with issues.

I agree 100% with one exception: It doesn't cost anything more to rout the headstock to a slightly different shape. Electronics, detail on the bindings, sure, costs in time and materials, but shaping the headstock differently, no difference in time or materials. For me, the Kalamazoo headstock is fine, but no one can convince me it cost more to do any more than the Gibson traditional shape would cost. And I figure the lawyers are getting paid either way.

Who actually thinks they should get an Epiphone with all the works for $500? No one who’s reasonable thinks these new guitars should be $500. I get that people are unreasonable sometimes but at the end of the day the most this criticism is valid considering how much guitar prices have inflated over the years. The price of these new epiphones only look good because they inflated the heck out of the regular Epiphones for a few years before this. Like for example the original 59s with the regular Epiphone headstock use to cost $800 a couple years ago but now they cost $1,000. Don’t get me wrong these new epiphones are pretty amazing and I really want one but the price should be a little lower than what it is. At the end of the day these are great guitars but I just feel like you’re paying more than you should. If these were like $200 less than I think they would be more reasonable. I just really hope the factory workers are getting raises because all that money from inflating these prices has to go somewhere.

The only disappointing aspect of the new range is the Indian laurel fingerboards. I saw on an andertons video that they said their example was darker than usual but I think at that price they have to make an effort to stain/darken the Indian laurel if they refuse to offer rosewood. In my opinion, laurel fretboards can really kill the look of a neck. I'd rather have ebony on a LP standard than laurel, even if it looks wrong.

For me, looking at the 1959 ES-355, I think it is worth it; the actual Gibson Custom Shop equivalent is +£6000, Epiphone sells the guitar which has the same electronics, the same hardware, the same body specs (single piece neck, ebony fretboard and what else), with a hardcase but with a poly finish and made in their Chinese factory (which has been making guitars for nearly 20 years) for £1200. To upgrade a new Epiphone dot (ES-335 at around £600) to these specs, it would cost me £500 to £600 (with me doing the installation). Because of this, IMO, the price makes sense, sure it costs less for Epiphone to upgrade a guitar in the factory but they are a business and their goal is to make money. You cannot please everyone all the time, some people will not be happy about it and that is their right, other will be happy to get the equivalent to a £6000 guitar for £1200, to each their own.

Spot on, you get what you pay for. Buy a cheap guitar, you get a cheaply made guitar. I own 50 guitars, mostly Gibson. But even I know a good value, when I see one. If people complain that it isn't a Gibson, guess what? It's never going to be a Gibson. I just saw a guy complaining about the price of $1299, for the Epiphone Korina Explorer (for the record, I bought one). He says, I can buy a Gibson Explorer for $200-$300 more. I reminded him that while that is true, he can't buy a Gibson, Korina bodied Explorer with 1958 Specs, for a couple of hundred dollars more... That will cost him $8,700 more @ $9,999. Some people just lack any critical thinking skills. Instead of looking at what they are getting for their money, all they see is the price. As for the one's that complain, "but, it's an Epiphone"... my advice to them, since they just want a name brand on their gear... don't buy an Epiphone... you'll never be happy, because the quality of the instrument, doesn't matter to you... only the name on it. The same goes for amplifiers... if you're buying because of a name, you're buying for the wrong reasons. I own Marshall, Peavey and many other name-brand amps... I play Ceriatone Amplifiers.

I actually thought the new line is too cheap. They all have Custombuckers in them don't they? 500 € only for the Pickups? The normal 335 has a price of 600 €. Add the Pickups you are already at 1100 then add the one piece neck, the fancy Inlays, the Headstock, that's an easy 200 € and they come with a case 100-150€. So in my opinion they could have easily priced the new 355 at 1600 and people would have still bought them. Thomann (biggest seller in Europe) is already out of stock.

The biggest problem is that with every upgrade and subsequent price increase, they get a *little* bit closer to the impressive spec list of other import brands, but *FURTHER* from those guitars' pricetags. While those competitors are giving better and better bang for the buck, while Epiphone's giving worse and worse bang for the buck. Don't give us $200 worth of upgrades for $500 extra. Don't even give us $200 worth of upgrades for $200 extra. Sweeten the pot a little. I'll bet money these new pricey Epis have better profit margins than the regular ones. And that's the problem. Also, it's obviously hyperbole when you say "you want an upgraded epi with gibson pickups and brand-name electronics for 500 bucks." No, I would want that for $1,000 or maybe $1,150. Not $1300. Not $1500. If you pose to your audience "y'all want an upgraded Epiphone with Gibson pickups and brand-name electronics for $1,000?!", I think the answer would be a resounding "yeah!", cuz that sounds downright reasonable to me. The Yim Yames signature, for example is $899. Now we're talking! They can do those prices. This is profiteering. This is increased profit margins. Again, I'll bet money on that. And we don't like that. We asked for better guitars, not worse value. We don't want 60% better guitars for 100% extra money. Import competitors are doing stuff like stainless frets, full-thickness maple caps, figured tops, ebony boards, high-end brand name pickups like Fishman/Nordstrand/Lundgren, locking tuners, Evertune bridges, easy-access neck heels, etc., for very reasonable prices. Their upgrades run circles around Epi's. The game has changed. They can't give us a few moderate upgrades and charge these kind of premiums. The market has blown past them. They may not want to touch those upgrades because they stick to more vintage-spec designs, but then stay outta that pricing league.

I think the new Epiphones are very cool. Especially for the price. And the fact that they have Gibson pickups and electronics in them. $1300 isn't really unreasonable. I have to disagree about the pickups not mattering. If you switch out the pickups whether you have $600 Epiphone or the $1300 one with a set of Seymour Duncans you will notice the difference. Especially in the $600 one with the Epiphone pickups.

I agree with you 100% about the complaining… I don’t understand it. However, I am a fan of the new models. I think the price makes perfect sense. The new 355 for example; has Grovers, open book headstock, ebony fingerboard, real pearl inlays, and $400 Gibson pick ups…. So in my opinion, the price makes sense. I would pay that. The other thing I would mention is that it’s not like they took the old Epiphones away. So again, the complaining makes no sense to me? The great guitars that Epiphone has always offered at their normal price points are still there, yet everyone is laser focused on their new (premium) models which are meant to satisfy the Gibson fanboys. In short, they now have something for everyone… So rather than get upset, it’s a reason to praise Epiphone for having something great for every player at any budget.

I think the main reason why people are upset is because Epiphone seems to refuse to put the Gibson headstock on the 600 dollar models for some reason. I think most people don't really need the improved specs like the Gibson pickups, wood, bridge and all that as there seems to be no shortage of players I see online saying good things about the specs of the 2020 inspired by Gibson models, like the 50s you shown in the video, even though they use less expensive components. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think shaping the laurel necks to have a Gibson headstock shouldn't really constitute as using "better quality" components, it's just a different shape (that they already have so no need for a redesign), thus shouldn't add much if at all to the manufacturing cost. Now the only way they could get a Gibson headstock is if they're willing to pay for those other upgrades as well which they don't really ask for. So I can get the feeling that people are somewhat feeling like they have their hands tied. It's just not an answer for the problem of "I want a Gibson headstock on my Epiphone". I think if Epiphone decides to update the 2020 models with Gibson headstocks but with the exact same specs they have now, people would be really happy with that. Also the reason why I keep banging on about the headstock is because I feel like no one else changes the shape of their headstocks for their budget brands. Squier has Fender headstocks, PRS still has the same looks on their budget models to their more expensive ones, so Epiphone's insistence on not putting it on their guitars is a bit frustrating. If they want to put their own headstock, they have plenty of models they could do that with, like the Casino or Riviera. Idk for me that's the only issue that the current Epiphones have, but I might be wrong so feel free to debate me on these points.

There is something to be said about not wanting to pay over $1000 bucks for an import guitar but this is something ESP, Schecter and all the other manufacturers have already been doing. Epiphone is essentially Gibsons import line. Its a Gibson without the name on the headstock. Gibson just doesn't want to put their name on anything but their premium usa models that cost 4 times more, which makes the Chinese models look pretty reasonable price wise. And with the same electronics, mop inlays, and hardware as the more expensive Gibson USA models, and comes with the open book headstock and a hardshell case, 1300 is a pretty reasonable price. Give it a nice set up and it will be worth every penny and sound just as good as the one with the name on the headstock that cost 4 times as much.

Epiphone had really improved its quality. I’m looking at the new ES-335. But Gibsons are better in the sense that they are made from higher quality woods and there’s a higher level of craftsmanship. Gibsons also have a better “feel” in terms of the neck, fingerboard, and body. I think you would have to be an advanced player with experience on different guitars to notice, however. In the past, Epiphone was generally targeted at beginners. They now seem to also be targeting professional working musicians with their new models. These guitars play well and sound great, but the player isn’t going to have a heart attack if his Epiphone falls off its stand or gets damaged in transit.

While I agree with you with the wood argument, the level of craftsmanship argument is not so true (Custom Shop guitar excluded), they use the same processes in both factories, labour cost is vastly different, it is not that they cannot make the same guitar, is that the Chinese factory has to produce more guitars so workers spend less time on each guitar. The number of successful musicians that use Epiphone guitars speaks for the quality of their guitars (Jared James Nichols comes to mind).

3:04 Meanwhile Jackson JS22 guitars are $300 and are that.... Like assuming Gibson getting good prices on the stuff thyey put on guitars/make them in house... Why not put the good stuff in budget guitars and just make less profit you know like Jackson does? Like Gibsons are vastly over priced and now are epiphones they don't have to be.

People just want to trash anything associated with Gibson. But Gibson is changing with the industry. Has anyone paid any attention to what Indonesian and Korean made guitars are going for- no matter what brand it is? In fact, Korean guitars were getting so expensive that PRS moved their SE production to Indonesia to save on costs. Let's also remember that a vast majority of Fender branded guitars are made in Mexico. Has anyone checked the price of a Players series guitar, or a Vintera, or a signature model? All of them are made in Mexico. Gibson USA is getting out of the sub $1800 space for guitars. Everyone whines that they're so expensive- but in reality they were the only US manufacturer still making guitars below $1800. Epiphone is taking up the slack. I'm not so sure they should be making them in China, but that factory that they own has been making some very nice guitars, and they have complete control of the quality. It seems to me that Epiphone is just covering a wider price range now. There's nothing wrong with that considering that they are competing directly with everyone else that is doing the same exact thing.

Seems strange that people think it’s OK for Gibson to offer Les Pauls in a range of prices from two grand to ten grand but Epiphone can’t do the same, at a QUARTER of the price, without an outpouring of online vitriol. Nobody is dragging you to your computer keyboard and forcing you to buy this stuff at gunpoint - if you don’t want to pay the price then shut your gob and buy something else! Guitars are luxury items, they’re toys for God’s sake - there are things happening in this world that deserve our disgust and anger, but the price of petty trinkets isn’t one of them

There was a huge hole between 600$ Epi and 2500$ Gibson. There's a big market in that hole. Each budget has an option with that brand now. These new Epiphone will be in the same range as Japanese guitars now. Clever. Fender already had the Mexican range for that.

That's true. I don't really have a problem with it, as long as the brand maintains its accessibility to those of us who like that under $1000 to $1000 mark.

I think you are missing a point a bit. Epiphone can be a good sounding guitar but will still feel cheap. Thick poly finish, not resonant bodies and heavy. I would take any day of the week LP Tribute over Decked out Epi Greeny. You can get 2 used Tributes for Greeny. But when it comes to standards for imports, for example I have Revstar RSS02T and this is what I expect in a range of 700-800 bucks. I owned some mid to higher end Epiphones and they are nowhere close.

Man honestly - to me this is totally fine... Epiphone purposefully moves part of the range upwards a bit and frankly there is nothing wrong with that as long as these are going to be quality intruments (which they are, i am sure the price difference is not just the different pickups and the headstock). I dont think the models 'standard' and so on will get much more expensive. what you see here is a new Epiphone line for more money, but still insanely great deal. Who has 6k to spare for a beautiful Custom Black Beauty or Alpine white? does original epiphone custom come any close to the quality of the Gibson customs? Not a bit, sorry. But if Epiphone can offer something maybe more pricy, but much closer to the actual customs - taky my f$~^&ng money! :D (same thing with the Korina models or the SG 1963, comon guys dont you want it??? i do!!! and i own gibsons too- and yes i want many of the hiend models but i am not spending that money, not even second hand screw that lol) point being - to me Epiphone finally did what they should have done a long time ago, offering us worthy alternative to the hiend models, i say bravo! :)

I say bravo too, I just think it's funny seeing all of the people who were most vocal about it STILL finding things to complain about. lol
