Cash only policy in many places is not due to technological delay, in fact, we have the most developed ATM system in the world. It's just that the Banks taxes on commercial ATM machines are very high and the small commerces do not want to pay them. I say good for them.

A fair review. We're about 50mins south of Lisbon - plenty of things to see and do within an hour or so from Lisbon. Amazing beaches, great restaurants, friendly people, very easy transport system - everywhere it seems. We're happy we chose Portugal for our new home.

Thank you, definitely agree- some days the UK really makes me think "should i just pack up my packs and move to Portugal permanently?!"

@@CharlesKerr easily done - D7 visa then you’re on the path to temporary residency, permanent residency then citizenship in about 5 years.

Thanks Charlie! This will help in my upcoming holiday trip to Portugal! In regards to clubs - I understand what you mean. This has been my typical experience with popular clubs here in the USA also. It's not unusual for a group to try to get in, and all the guys get turned away. Sometimes they will relent if the girls won't go in without them. It just feels wrong in this day and age imo.

Yeah the ground does get very slippery and its sloped (a lot) so be careful and wear really good walking shoes. As for "cash only", well if you had to pay the bank fees we pay here, you would too accept just cash. Bank fees here are ridiculous for local monthly salaries. I have to pay 10US a month just to have an account. I have to pay for my debit card, cc, and as of May 2022 my fee is going up, so no wonder. The issue is not technical, it's economic.

Hi Charles, I'm in the process of applying for a long-stay visa for Portugal. Trying to move to Lisbon from Cape Town for a new experience in life :) . One of the requirements is a 12-month lease contract/confirmation of accommodation for 12 months. I'm battling to find an affordable studio apartment or a private room in a house/apartment share. Any advice for someone to look /search who is not on Facebook? And areas? I have no idea, so confusing :) Also, I am a light sleeper, haha. Have you been to Porto?
@CharlesKerr2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian! Hope the search is going well. It might be worth setting up a dummy Facebook account as I know there’s a few Digital Nomad groups there. Otherwise Twitter is a great place (use advanced search to find people in Lisbon right now/tweeting about Digital Nomadding in Lisbon) or Reddit too. One other alternative particularly if you want to meet people is to stay in a Selina for a few weeks/months so you can visit places/find house sharing friends. Kyero also looks like a good platform to find properties

Please don’t describe some things as backward. Portuguese people place a lot of importance on appearances and conduct so if you’re looking a bit scrappy or dodgy then bad luck to you. It’s cultural. Nothing backward about it. Also, paying with cash is a great equalizer since not everyone has a credit card or should be expected to have one!

Nobody spoke about not accepting cash... Most people nowadays dont carry cash. I have an issue with my corner shop, where they dont accept cards. And often the ATMs in the area dont have cash! I have no means to pay unless I get in the car and go somewhere else to get cash... I live near Lisbon by the way. The solution for me, is paying later to the grocery store, as they know me. Oherwise I'd have to shop somewhere else.
