While I do agree that fragrance isn't the devil, I still feel like fragrance ingredients that are *known* to potentially cause irritation should at least be mentioned on labels (the same way allergens are labelled on food). That way people who do have reactions to a specific fragrance ingredient won't have to avoid every single product that has any fragrance and it would still protect a company's trade secret since they would only have to disclose a few ingredients in that sub-formula. Even if ' ' only ' ' about 15% of people experience reactions, I still think they deserve to know what exactly is causing their problems.

Thank you so much for saying this! I get migraines from some products with fragrance but not all. I try to make sure it's further down on the list of ingredients but sometimes I react anyway. It's a complete gamble every time I buy a new product and it's not as easy as one might think to avoid it all together.
@A.I.M.934 жыл бұрын
@Karen Karen The problem is not that fragrance isn't on the label, but that what the fragrance is composed of isn't disclosed on the label. I understand why because she explained it really well in the video. However, it's still unfair to people that have reactions to fragrance because we have no way of knowing what in that fragrance is causing a reaction and therefore cannot avoid it.

I bought into Paula's dogma about fragrance, that any irritation is bad because it can break down collagen. And I appreciate Dr. Dray's argument that over time you can become sensitized. Ultimately though, I just noticed that it seemed to benefit my skin when I started minimizing the amount of fragrance I used in skincare. I might use cleaners with fragrance occasionally or periodically try moisturizers that contain a bit of fragrance, but I just don't really trust products that are fragranced and wouldn't regularly use any. if anything, this video just further illustrates why it's important to know your ingredients so you can know if a face cream is packed with unnecessary fragrance or something, especially if they are fragrant compounds that don't mix well with the sun.

@adk59974 жыл бұрын
It also is weird the other way. I have tried many products and had most problems in 2012-13 and then there were no videos to help me figure why can I not use any of the creams without burning and irritation afterwards. So I used nearly nothing, some jojoba oil. (Eczema developed badly if I experimented) At that time there was not much in UK to use for ‘sensitive’ skin, but there was Simple, so I tried that. It was better than others, and their cream or lotion burned less. But far from 100% comfort for really irritated skin of mine... I even used Shea butter for my dry upset skin, as that did not burn me.. Then I tried others like aveene-and this did not work, and first thing I noticed is that it had fragrance in it! Because I was so not used to it after time of simple or jojoba oil.. 😂 was subtle, but my nose was like that of the cat... I figured myself to look for anything that had no strong perfume smells, as I naturally associated it with those creams that burned the most.. 😅 Now when I compare the Simple cream to what I use now, simple stings me a bit. I am so glad that Europe opened to S. Korea market with cosmetics, as there is few more good non fragrance, really mild options to compare and choose from, which inspires market here too.

@sidlowe42094 жыл бұрын
@@sarahmunson1778 Then you shouldn't use anything at all. That's literally what the studies have shown: yes, repeated exposure to common fragrance ingredients will sometimes (see: very rarely) eventually cause you to become sensitive to them (see: those specific allergens, aka just because you become sensitive to one fragrance doesn't mean you'll become sensitive to EVERY fragrance, just that specific one, ex. linalool), but that is the case for virtually all potential allergens. Plenty of mainstream skincare actives share that same potential. Repeatedly eating the same food can eventually cause you to become allergic/sensitive to that food. Various medications can cause you to build up sensitivity to them when taken over a long span of time. That's just how the body reacts to compounds it wouldn't normally encounter. Again, it's rare that this happens, and when it does, the solution is to just...stop exposing yourself to whatever you've become sensitive to. Used lavender-scented lotion for 20 years and suddenly you're breaking out when you use it? Just stop using it and you're fine. It's really not a big deal.
@sarahmunson17784 жыл бұрын
@@sidlowe4209 it's extremely difficult to figure out which fragrance ingredients you're allergic to so that's not so simple, plus it is far more likely to become allergic to fragrance than other potential irritants - as Cassandra said, probably about 10% of the population is sensitive to them. It definitely isn't a big deal, so why are you all so upset that a VERY FEW products are fragrance free and people want to use them? Why are people acting like those of us with highly sensitive skin are hurting fragrances' feelings?
@JamieNotLamie4 жыл бұрын
A lot of you didn't listen to the full video. Yes. There are people with legitimate fragrance allergies, but I have a feeling most of you haven't been to an allergist as I have and had a patch test done for fragrance. (I had a big test done, it was just one of the things they tested but you can ask to have that specific test done) What cassandra was saying, was sometimes people can be using something that has a different irritating ingredient, and assume it's the fragrance, there are some things classified as fragrance, but they actually shouldn't be as they're there for skin benefits. There's more to it than "we don't care about people with allergies" There will always be skin care with fragrance, and more and more, we will see some without it, but, don't think money hungry companies are going to be bending over backwards for a hypothetical 15%. Only 5% were confirmed anyway.

But the people that actually get irritation or bad reactions from it I understand why it’s forbidden in their skincare but as for others who don’t, just quit following the leader an do what works for YOU! simple.
@machoke6664 жыл бұрын
I'm really happy that someone with as much influence as Hyram talks about the fact that fragrance can be bad for skin, I've noticed that many recent skincare launches are fragrance free, and as someone with a fragrance allergy I'm glad that the products that are available to me as a consumer isn't just like 10% of what people who aren't sensitive to fragrance have available to them, but more like 15-20%, you know?

Paige Alexis as i said in my comment i see why it’s forbidden in people skincare who actually have irritation or reactions to it. I 100% agree that it should be more inclusive with people who are ACTUALLY allergic or sensitive to fragrance im strictly talking to ppl who are just gullible an follow anything someone else says. Not saying these people or “experts” don’t have valid points but it’s ok not to take certain advice an do what works for u.

I use aveeno eczema and restorative skin therapy products and skinfix products and they don’t smell bad and I’ve used a lot of other fragrance and essential oil free products that smell good so the notion that all fragrance free products smell bad needs to change too. I was never allergic to fragrance and one day that changed and it sucked and it still does because I’m allergic to so many things now. My opinion is that companies need to at least offer fragrance free and essential oil free products and use good preservatives since these “natural one” seem to becoming more of an issue and causing allergic reactions.

I would definitely like to share this video to those people or even skincare influencers who 'anyhow' demonize fragrance out of their shallow knowledge. This is very insightful and convincing.

My wish is that companies would made fragrance-free products and put it in elegant packaging like they do with the perfumed junk. Just bc I have a fragrance allergy doesn’t mean my eyes have an allergy to beautiful packaging. I’m tired of having to use products with bland packaging just bc my skin won’t tolerate being suffocated in volatile substances that don’t even smell good to me anyway.

Your videos are sooo informative and relaxing!!! Not only you helped me get consistent with a skincare routine i really needed to put together but avoided for years (i have kp) you also changed my perspective on skincare being self care (beforehand i would see all products as marketing schemes and moneygrabs) anddd you really promote a healthier mindset, critical thinking and morals in consumer choices!!! Influencers who don't support fragrance have significantly less opportunities to get sponsorships by more expensive brands (which are typically fragranced). I feel that might be the main reason why more and more influencers are switching their stance from 'fragrance is bad' to 'fragrance is not THAT bad'.

I think everyone needs to stop arguing, because none of this is our fault. Some of us are highly allergic to any scent, some of us are all about lathering on something that smells good, some just don't even know that fragrance can even be bad for skin. What we need, is transparency from companies, they need to inform what exactly the fragrance being used is, as cassandra said, some fragrances shouldn't even be classified as such as they provide a different purpose, but they have a scent. Scent doesn't always equal fragrance.. This was a well rounded video. I feel a lot of people missed all the info in it's entirety though. No one is saying people with allergies shouldn't use fragrance free, she clearly says to avoid these things if you're one of those people. But she also says that you should get a test before claiming to be allergic to all, and every fragrance. It could be another irritating ingredient. Just be open minded, but yes it is still a possibility. The point is that it's fear mongered way more than it should be.

Hello Cassandra, congrats for the very detailed science behind fragrance in skincare and beauty industry! I, myself am a fragrance lover and like not only to wear it such as an accessory so to speak , but also include it in my skincare.Since i have suffered from comedogenic acne , i tried to step away from fragrant skincare on my face but could not help it not to include it in body moisturisers.It's just what i call a guilty pleasure that makes skincare overall not just a rutin but more of a ritual :) .Btw I would love to see more videos about haircare, what really works and what not for each hair type, products, etc.Good job :)

Maybe fragrance is fine for most people, but those who can't use fragrance are left with limited options. It seems like everything is scented nowadays. My mother has SEVERE asthma, and can't be around anyone wearing any fragrance at all. It really limits what skincare products I am able to use, and it's very frustrating that there aren't more fragrance free options available. I have to do a lot more work and put in a lot more effort to research and find products that work for me and also aren't scented. If fragrance does cause someone a reaction, then any "benefits" that fragrance might offer are useless, so what's the point? I'd rather forgo any tiny benefits that a fragrance might give me and not risk a reaction, and actually be able to use a product. I'm glad that more brands are starting to embrace the fragrance free route. Anyone who won't use a product without fragrance regardless of what it does for their skin doesn't really care about the effectiveness of the product for their skin, so let them just wear actual perfumes (since that's their sole purpose) and leave skincare for the people who are actually trying to take care of their skin.
@hannaelawil87934 жыл бұрын
Exactly! That’s why so many people get irritated when companies add fragrance in skincare. While it won’t cause severe reactions for certain people, it makes their products less inclusive, because some people can’t use fragrance.

It really depends on the strength and preference of the fragrance for me. For instance, I dislike the smell of lavender, although many people like it. I do have unscented skincare products. They either smell like plain yogurt or hospital, so I don't really mind.

I can’t wear perfume because it makes my throat feel really “scratchy “ and I also get a headache from some scents. I can tolerate some and some not. I usually stay away from fragrance in other products also because my skin is super reactive and I am eczema prone. I can tolerate skin care products with fragrance as long as it’s very low on the ingredients list. The most frustrating thing it trying to find skin care with actives at the drugstore without fragrance. There’s not a lot of choice there.

I wouldn't say totally acceptable :P 5% of the US is still 16 million people who can't use a product just because the word "fragrance" is on the inky list; there's no way in telling if their specific allergen is mixed in unless every thing is specified.

I feel like people shouldn't be associating aromatherapy with their skincare and vise versa. Like the whole idea of "i dont use skincare if it doesnt smell good" just makes me uncomfortable for lack of a better word. Like its not supposed to smell good its supposed to take care of your skin, and if fragrance doesn't help skin, whats the purpose? But I completely get that a lot of scents arent the worst and that different things are important to different people. Thank you so much for all your videos Cassandra. I learn so much every time! I appreciate the video. Very informative. And well made. I have mild rosacea so I tend to just steer clear of any fragrance in my skincare on my face. I feel like my face gets irritation very easily so, it's better to just eliminate fragrance just for the purpose of smelling good, just to be on the safe side. My heavy-duty body lotions for every day, I also like them to be fragrance-free... I'm always so blotchy. However, I do use scented lotions to layer with perfumes so, I'm ok with it on my body, just not all the time.

Such a thorough, interesting video! You're killing it with your content. I personally choose to avoid fragrance in skincare because I have rosacea, and fragrance is a vasodilator and potentially irritating. I'm also pretty sure I have a genuine fragrance allergy, as I've gotten allergic reactions from highly scented bath products and certain incense. Never from skincare, but that might be because the concentration is relatively low. It's worth it to me to avoid it altogether, but I get why fragrance is so important to others and their self-care routine.

I think when you use a lot of actives, such as Tretinoin, fragrance becomes more of an issue...also, some essential oils have been shown to cause photo damage...me, I use fragrance free as much as possible and my skin is much happier...I light a candle during my skincare routine for a nice sensory effect...

I think it's SUPER annoying that "safe for sensitive skin" products or even "fragrance free" products will include fragrant chemicals like limonene, linalool, geraniol, etc. I react to those and it is very hard to find affordable products for sensitive reactive skin without these ingredients. I'll buy perfume if I want to smell nice.

My point is most brand just labelled fragrance or purfume which we don't know what they put in their. I don't know if I will become sensitized to it in future or not and the people who are already allergic to it why there is not a fragrance free option. I think it is dermatologist job to aware us about the fact what can affect us. I think there are a lot of preservatives and substitute for those ingredients that are multipurpose and also fragrance. And the fact that products are not regulated here. Why we are not on safe side when it is possible to make a product fragrance free. For me I just want brands to make a version of fragrance free for people who are already allergic or sensitive to it or for those who want to avoid it bcz brands tend to make same products with cherry, jasmine, lemon..... A lot of version. I appreciate your video🙏🙏
