Great video. I love your down to earth style. Everyone should give camping a go, I would go all the time if I could. Some of my best camps I’ve had is where the weather has been really up and down. A lot of people buy expensive kit but without mastering techniques it’s useless. I went to bed recently in my OEX EV 400 bag on a Thermarest xtherm mattress and I was cold all night because I didn’t change into fresh dry clothes. Had a layer of cold sweat on my from the walk and it only dropped down to 9c. I’ve slept in that bag down to 5c and been completely fine. Ear plugs have been superb for me, dry boots is also nice. I’ve got a few waterproof jackets with big hoods, always annoying I now wear a cap while wearing them as now the hood sits perfect and keeps the rain put my face. I always come home shattered and beaten and I always appreciate my bed when im back. But within 24hrs I’m already planning and desperate to get back out on the next camp.

Some very good points Andy. Sometimes people are so focused on things that are not right about their wild camping experience that they actually deny their own enjoyment. The whole point of being out there is going back to basics, living simply, getting in touch with nature and improving our wellbeing. It's easy for some people to lose sight of that.

I’m just getting back into camping and backpacking having more time now I’m retired. I’ve set up an entire light-ish weight kit from watching lots of KZbin videos and buying low price or second hand kit. I found a VauDe tent for £80 Facebook, as well as a DD tarp and a bivi bag. It’s very do-able on a budget and I’m grateful for all the vids like yours that share information so freely.

Thanks for making this video Andy. Going in, I thought you'll address my biggest thing about wild camping but you only partially did at the end with the mindset thing. My "problem" that makes wild camping less enjoyable is that I feel very exposed. I'm doing a big motocamping trip in Norway now and ended up staying less in the wild and more in cabins so far than I expected. Sure, the cold and rain have something to do with it. But also, finding a decent wildcamp spot at the end of a long day can be challenging. Also, twice now I've been woken up in the middle of the night by moose howling right next to my tent. Yes, it's very much being in the wild, which is part of the fun, yet if I am having not a great day and some bad weather, I can get antsy about the whole wildcamp stuff, sleep really badly and then be groggy the next day. I'll try to practice more your mindset advice and try to enjoy all aspects of the experience. But if you'd have any other advice, it'd be much appreciated.

Urgh condensation is a mare. Just back from a 5 days hiking & wild camping the Rob Roy Way. The temp dropped to 3° at night & our lanshan 2 pros were drenched by morning. We sponged off as much as we could but had to pack up wet. Luckily we had sunny weather with a light breeze so could air & dry the tent later in the day when we made a cuppa but it is a ball ache having condensation. X

I would have frozen in my Lanshan 2 Pro if the temp got down to 3 degrees. Did you find the tent really cold? I only use it in summer.
@niks_healthy_lifestyle16912 жыл бұрын
@@BackpackingUK I actually thought for June it'd be warmer overnight. They're also our lightest tents, we were all carrying 12kg without food & water so didn't want to be carrying heavier tents especially as myself & daughter were also using hiking poles anyway. Out of 4 of us I was the only one cold but I'm cold in bed with a thick duvet & heating on too 🤣. Definitely considering a Naturehike cloud peak 2 (my other tents are OEX Phoxx 2 or a Vango 300). X

@@niks_healthy_lifestyle1691 That's fair enough, I'm looking out of the winter now thinking where's summer!!! Lanshan's are great tents, just not good in the cold. To counter this I would recommend using a 4 season sleeping bag even when the weather is relatively mild.

I've just had my first wild camp in the lakes (easedale tarn) with the better half and my youngest daughter 9 year old. £600 for all our gear. 2 x 2 man tents, 3 backpacks, 3 sleep mats (self inflating) 3 sleeping bags, collapsible cooking pot and all the necessary stuff for eating, walking poles, collapsible chairs, gas burner on a hose and gas, walking boots for us all and all the clothing that's needed ( hats layers of tops and coats, pants socks) the only thing I over did was the amount of water we took with us because I haven't picked up a water filtration system yet. Most of the kit I've got is Peter storm and oex. Had a great time sunset stars and sunrise 🌅. And the best thing is that the initial cost comes down every time we go trekking 👍 I'm part of hiking buddies uk so it's just a bonus to be able to camp on hikes .

Well, if you have an earth floor in your tent and are on top of a hill or whatnot. You could poke a hole at a 45 degree angle or so that starts in the tent and exits down the slope of the hill. Then you can take a 5 gallon bucket, turn it upside down, cut a poo hole and fix a seat to it. When you poo it goes into the hole and down the slope until it exits the other side. Might have to chase it with some water, but it would work.

Hi I'm having an issue finding the right rucksack. For starters I don't know what capacity to take, I'm not the tallest of people so 60L plus bags just make me look tiny, but 45/50L bags don't fit everything in. Secondly.. If I carry anything over 15 kg my back hurts after a mile or so.. Do you have any advice or recommendations for any good rucksacks?
@elliottwright37722 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you're carrying and what you're planning on doing! Generally 40-45L will do for weekend trips, while 60-70L is closer to week long expedition size. If you're carrying 15kg+ and 45/50L packs are too small, it looks like 60L plus is what you need. This might be a matter of looking into what you're packing, to see whether you're carrying anything non-essential, or whether you can swap out gear with less bulky alternatives. As for the pain, I'd say try to lighten the load as much as possible for now, but try getting some strength training under your belt. Hiking is a physical activity - train for it and your body will thank you. A lot cheaper and healthier than forking out £££ on ultralight gear.
@stetrainer2 жыл бұрын
@@elliottwright3772 Thanks for that.. so the back pain is more of a health issue thsn a backpack issue? I was thinking im buying the wrong kind of pack.. but i guess I'll have to get myself to the gym instead 🤣 I do tend to overpack and end up taking things I don't need so I maybe need to look into that. I'm terrible for telling myself it's best to have something and not need it rather than need it and not having so I end up taking as much as I can. Thank you for the advice I really appreciate the help. Love your content it's perfect for people like myself and I'm learning more and more... so thank you 👍
@elliottwright37722 жыл бұрын
@@stetrainer Really impossible to guess! I know it's a struggle as I pack the same way, but I'd start by temporarily reducing your pack weight as much as possible to stop the pain. Then get in contact with your local outdoors gear store to see if they offer backpack fittings so they can recommend the perfect pack for your needs. I would still advocate looking into exercises that strengthen the posterior chain too for the simple fact that it's going to reduce any chance of a real injury developing along with making hiking much easier and more enjoyable. I'm not actually Andy (Backpacking UK), just another subscriber trying to help where I can! Good luck with the backpack hunt 😊
