I apologize in advance for being serious on a humorous video, but this made me think of something important. When you play by yourself, it’s natural to try to play something that sounds good by itself. And when you also practice by yourself, the two bleed together. So you end up playing complicated things that take up all the space in the “composition”. A “solo piece for (x instrument)”. Playing in a band, and playing what’s right for a song are different things from playing by yourself. So if you just play solo bass for KZbin videos, etc, then one kind of thing is called for. But if you play in a band and play for the song, sometimes “Thunderstruck” is the right thing. Neither is right or wrong. It’s all about context.
