Thank you so much for this video. I'm 36, and starting a Music degree in September. I'm absolutely petrified as I was taken on based on 'professional experience' - basically I played drums on a couple of professionally recorded albums and performed hundreds of gigs over the course of my adult life. I had unwittingly had done the interview while speaking to the tutor during the open day, so they accepted me purely just on a 45 minute conversation. I went looking to do a diploma but they said it would be too easy for me based on my experience. I had never studied A levels as I was bullied out of school. I haven't had to do an access course and there is no foundation year, so I am really worried 😨 I'm worried because I don't have any formal grades. Im working to get grade 5 music theory in just before uni starts. I am probably grade 7 on drums according to Trinity Rockschool but can play some grade 8 songs. I'm rusty as hell as haven't been able to drum during covid as my studio got condemned and couldn't find anywhere to relocate my drums with no job 😞 Been learning piano and started grade 2 after 7 months. So I hope this will help with using a keyboard for composition modules etc. Since as I have not done an access course or A levels, I'm trying to do some reading on the modules for a similar course at another uni, that has a foundation year. Luckily I'm studying at a college, rather than a Uni, so it is smaller class sizes etc so a lot more support on hand. Sorry for going on. 😀 I'm excited but extremely nervous. I've tried to express this to the student support at the college but they are telling me to just relax until September.

Education is now democratised, University for me never helped me get a single gig or opportunity, it wasn't good for my time, or for my savings, for any musicians considering a degree in music, I'd suggest looking into finding an industry mentor, someone who's done it before and can guide you from musician to producer, to onstage at festivals, art spaces, and night clubs around the world, because this is how you are going to develop the skills and experiences to be able to live a musicians lifestyle. Use your time efficiently and think carefully, if this is a game of chess, plan out your next moves / years accordingly.

Hi Francesca I’m a violinist and I would love to study music at university. However, most unis I’ve looked at require at least grade 5 in piano and I’m not in the position to do that any time soon. I know a little piano and I do have good theory knowledge. Do you know if universities/conservatoires make exceptions for lack of g5 piano?

Hi! That’s so great that you want to do music! Birmingham say that if you don’t have A Level music, grade 7-8 theory can be a substitute. Or you could check out other types of music courses. The University of Huddersfield have a wide variety of music courses & I believe there might be some places that do a diploma course, depending what area of music you want to go into. Definitely take a look around because it’s so worth it😊x

@@sophiexx8188 Depending on your level, you would have to work your way up to grade 7/8. They're the ABRSM Music Theory exams. Once you're confident that you can pass the exam (after learning the content and doing practise exam papers), you can enter for the exam on the ABRSM website and then attend the exam at a venue near you. I'm in year 11 atm, and I've picked music and music technology for A levels and I'd love to pursue music and study it at uni. I am currently doing grade 7 acoustic guitar and I love the performance side of it (I also play electric). However I've only got a basic understanding of music theory, would this be a problem with studying music at Birmingham or should I try and improve it over the next couple of years?
@francescaburbela9004
@francescaburbela9004 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameron, that's great that you're choosing music and want to pursue music at University! It depends what course you choose. You will need to look at the modules that the university offers to find a course that fits your strengths best. I reckon you'll be fine getting into a University, especially with A-level music and your grades in acoustic guitar, but it is always useful to have a good understanding of music theory. There may be some compulsory modules that you find difficult at uni because you don't have a more comprehensive understanding of the theory, but you have plenty of time to work on that before you apply :) I hope this helps and good luck with your GCSE's!! x

What do you think about it?

Hi! I'm so glad you liked the video☺️ I'm really sorry that you felt pressured to do a degree that you're not passionate about. My advice would be to pursue what makes you happy, because whatever you're passionate about, you'll be happy and successful in whatever you end up doing! Music is also a great degree to have and is incredibly versatile! You can even do a law conversion course if you want to. You gain so many skills from music that are so vital to everyday working life and I can't recommend it enough. I've known many people change courses and at the end of the day, it's your future! Maybe write some points down and have a chat with your family about what is best for your own future. I hope this helps❤️xxx

I’m in year 9 at the moment and I’ve been invited to do a Scholar’s Programme at Oxford University. The aim is to educate me and some other chosen students in a PhD tutor’s specialty and it will look extremely good when it comes to writing Personal Statements. I would like to do Music (possibly at Oxford) because it’s something I’m extremely passionate about but I’m finding it hard to find piano lessons. They’re either too expensive or their duration isn’t long enough. Is there any advice on this as I know I need at least a Grade 4 piano to get into Oxford?
@francescaburbela9004
@francescaburbela9004 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chloe, this sounds like a great opportunity! If a music/piano teacher only has certain length lessons, e.g. on their website, it's definitely worth getting into contact with them and asking for a longer lesson. I don't see how they can turn this down. Obviously, this will be more expensive for you and unfortunately, due to current circumstances, a lot of music teachers are having to up charges just to stay afloat. If you're only just starting out, you might not need a full hour and you can start off with 30 mins to see how you get on. Another thing to remember is that the pandemic has shown us that virtual lessons are possible, so this might be another viable option for you. I hope this helped and let me know if you have any other questions. Francesca x

It really depends as they will look at your application as a whole and other skill sets that you have but you should be able to go with grade 8 theory and 2 a levels. Is it possible to without knowing how to play an instrument?
@francescaburbela9004
@francescaburbela9004 3 жыл бұрын
This depends whether you can sing or have accomplished a high level in music theory. Usually, the answer is no if you can't play any sort of instrument/sing, sorry.

U need to be completely oblivious to reality. That’s pretty much the only prerequisite. You don’t need it.

What are a and b levels
@francescaburbela9004
@francescaburbela9004 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. There is no B level, it's just A levels (Advanced Level qualifications). They are a U.K subject-based qualification for students aged 16 and above. They are usually studied over 2 years, and lead to qualifications recognised for entrance to higher education institutes in the UK and many others worldwide. Most higher education institutes require a minimum of 3 subjects. Hope this helped x

Hi, i’m in yr12 atm and i haven’t done gcse or a-level music and neither do i have a grade 7/8 but i’ve been playing guitar for about 9 years and do live shows all the time. I’ve also got a few songs to release later this year. I play guitar and a few other instruments and have taught myself theory with books and other resources, is this enough of a portfolio to substitute for what i’m lacking?

There are so many ensembles that you can join to get the full music experience without doing the degree. There are unauditioned choirs at university, auditioned choirs, big choirs, small choirs, choirs of varying standards and genres..all sorts. So there should be plenty of extra-curricular musical things that can keep you in the music stream. Hope this helped. :) xxx
