Hey Carlin! Love your videos and have been watching your family on TV for years and think you’re all great. I noticed that you and Katie described Katie’s preferences for her nails as OCD in this video. I know this is a common thing that a lot of people do but it’s actually very harmful when people throw the term ocd around to describe pet peeves or preferences or cleaning etc.. OCD is not something that everyone has a little bit of and it’s not just a word that means clean or organized or liking things a certain way. It’s a very deliberating anxiety disorder that involves unwanted intrusive thoughts, rituals, phobias, and many many other things. When people throw the term around wrongfully it discourages people from getting the help that they need and makes people with real or diagnosed OCD feel more isolated. Personally I struggle with never being taken seriously when I try to open up about having OCD because people just think I’m saying I’m “so ocd” like the people who throw the word around. I also struggled with not knowing I had OCD for years and not knowing there was help out there for me because I always thought OCD was about cleaning and didn’t know that my intrusive thoughts and rituals and other symptoms were real OCD. I hope this didn’t come off rude I just really want the world to know how harmful it is to do that. Best of luck!

Thank you for this. @stewartfam I know Katie didn’t mean any malice, but it’s seriously damaging to those with OCD. Comments like that totally stigmatize our disorder. We don’t enjoy the intrusive thoughts or rituals. We are already ashamed of what we do, and those comments just make us feel more ashamed. Just wanted to educate on the emotions behind this. Also, I do have OCD, and I am totally disorganized. I am not a cleaner. OCD has so many more manifestations besides having things perfect. And, we typically think that something awful will happen if we don’t make things “perfect”.

Doesn’t look good when Carlin is ignoring comments about it and Katie is blocking everyone on Instagram who are nicely trying to ask her to stop. You’ll never know how damaging adding to the stigma of ocd is if you don’t truly suffer from it.
