Stainless steel bowls are easier to keep sanitary. Never buy rawhide bones, not digestible. Kong toys are pretty sturdy but will depend on how big of a chewer she is. Buy the best quality food you can afford, check the ingredients.
@m7con5063 жыл бұрын
First of all, Fenna is the perfect name for her but here's a tip from a fellow dog owner. Do not give her any rawhide. It can obstruct her digestive tract and require surgery or even kill her. Instead give her bully sticks or Himalayan Cheese chews. Both can be found at pet stores, Walmart etc. Congratulations, she is a perfect addition to your family.

You want a crate with enough room for the dog to be able to stand up completely and turn around. It’ll be really uncomfortable for her if she can’t move positions while crated and might trigger hip issues which is more common in shepherds. Something to look into is breed specific dog food. Different sized and different breeds have different nutritional needs. You guys are so lucky to have the opportunity to have this gorgeous and brilliant girl.

I think you can get something like a playpen for dogs, or an enclosed dog run. It gives a dog more room than a crate. I've never used a crate for my dogs, but we did have a dog when I was in high-school that was in a crate on occasion in the beginng (at night or if we were not home and could not supervise her. She was out of the crate more than in and had plenty of playtime in the yard) Then we switched to having her In a small area of the house that was blocked with a gate. The crate was there with the door open and blankets so she could go in and out as she pleased. When she was fully house broken, she the gate came down and got rid of the crate when she got too big for it.

Good job adopting a dog from the shelter. Seeing as this is your first dog I highly suggest getting some books about dog care and positive training from the library. Clicker training with treats works well. Also many vets offer Basic obedience classes for pups (FYI dogs are puppies until two.) As others have said better quality food and bones/chew toys, bigger bed, and be positive with her. Dogs do well with lots of love, just like kids. That breed/mix is smart. Will need lots of exercise! Lots of walks outside! If she gets bored she will find her own fun (chewing your shoes.) I suggest going to your vet or a speciality dog store for healthier food options. Better food may cost a little more, but your dog will be healthier & happy. It pays off in the long run.

My family owns a pet food distribution company. The breed of dog you have will require a high protein diet because they are very active and the dog if still considered a puppy. That being said I know some of the foods are pricey. But keep in mind the better the ingredients the less food you will have to feed them. A cheap line like puppy chow you will feed more. Also stay away from corn and wheat. They are finding that a lot of dogs are allergic to wheat and corn. I stay away from all grains. Also a food that has a lot of corn and wheat in it means more poop to pick up. When adults go #2 what do you see in it, Corn!! Wheat and corn are nothing but fillers. Heres the best recommendation I can make for a grain free food that is affordable, Taste of the wild. It comes in 5 different flavors and you can switch from flavor to flavor without upsetting their GI tract. If you or Derrick have any other questions message me back. Along with owning the pet food distribution company my parents also own a feed store. I know a lot about dogs and dog food. I've been in this industry for 25 years. You can ask me anything. But trust me get that dog on Taste of the wild. It's doesnt cost that much more if you feed taste of the wild vs puppy chow. That is if you feed according to the directions on the back of the bag. Good luck y'all.

So happy for you! A few things I learned from working at a pet store. IAMS is a good choice for dog food and won't break the bank.. also when looking for Dog food always make sure the 1ST ingredients are real food, Chicken, Beef & Vegetables and Grains and not the random ingredients they put into the processed foods. Also they Raw hind you got can be dangerous to dogs because they don't break down well in their stomach so try to get Real animals jerky or sticks! And for for the Cage, you got a crate and that's for on the go travel stuff, you need a Cage and a bigger one since she's a puppy you are gonna need room for her to grow! Congrats on the New Dog!❤

Belgian Malinois and Shepherd type breeds tend to need a large breed food and something with a higher protein content that you can feed a reasonable amount. They also need omega 3 fatty acids and carbs. Being an active breed they use up a lot of energy so higher quality food will more often give you a bigger bang for your buck. They tend to put on weight easily so be mindful of portions and activity level as fat on these types of breeds can lead to other serious health issues. They should be trim with lean lines. A lot of what brand you want to feed your girl will depend on allergies and taste preference for her. It could be trial and error till you find one that works. Pumpkin and Sweet Potato will help if she gets an upset stomach. A lot of pet stores will have sample packs you can test her on. Grain free foods lately have been getting more notice as being not as healthy as people thought they were. My sister in law is a vet tech and her clinic have been getting more news about the negative long term effects. Starting with a super basic food is a good idea as pounds tend to use that and switching to quickly to a better brand could lead to gastric issues. My family bred them and other similar breeds for close to 100 years. Working dogs not show standard.

YAY!! Thank you so much for getting a shelter dog and not buying from a breeder or pet store! Belgian Malinois are extremely smart and can quickly become the "alpha" in the home. Training is key. Start with a puppy class or basic obedience training. Don't stop there. Super important to train at home about 15 mins in the morning and again in the evening. She will become bored without this. Bored dogs get mischievous and start tearing up things in your home. Oh, get the boys involved with the training. They'll love it and the dog will look up to them instead of thinking the boys are her equal. I use "sit" the way you teach your boys to say "please". Sit before you give her food. Sit before you put on her leash. Sit and wait before you open the door (whether the house or car). You don't want her running out in the street and yanking your arm while holding the leash. Also, long walks once -- or even two if you have time -- are super important. To teach her to stop jumping (or prevent it), teach her to sit if she wants to be pet. If you're standing and she jumps on you, turn around and say sit. Don't pet her or give her attention until she sits. Keep turning as she tries to follow you. Tell visitors the same thing. They will thank you! I know, it's a lot but in the long run, you'll have an awesome family dog instead of an out-of-control wild, large animal. I second what most other commenters have said -- no rawhide, that carrier is too small and don't buy food at Walmart. Go to PetSmart (also has training classes) or Petco or a small pet supply business like those. They'll have the large kennels and higher quality dog food. Transition her gradually to the new food (directions on bag) I wish you all the best with her! She is an excellent breed with kids. They'll grow up together and have a strong bond. Malinois are extremely loyal to their family and will be very protective with all of you but most especially with your boys.

Best 42-48 size crate for your puppy! And You want to make sure that it fits the dog comfortably and is not too loose or too tight. Wrap the measuring take around their neck, and make sure it's snug (but not tight).

Just remember the 3 day, 3 week, 3 month rule with rescues. 3 days to settle in and 3 weeks to start to feel comfortable and relax and show real personality and 3 months to be 100% settled in to your house.

Yes! I have 2 rescues. I had 3 but had to put him down 2 weeks ago. He was almost 18. He was the love of my life and actually saved me.... Rather than me saving him. I miss him! Anyway that is a great bit of information you gave. Patience and make sure the kids aren't to rough. They don't know any better and they get excited. Not their fault

yup - 3 3 3 rule/. this goes with all rescues we place. some take even longer but this is a general rule of thumb. so many dont understand what they have to go thru or have been thru with shelter life. thanks for sharing that, i posted it as well... blessings..

Thank you so much for adopting instead of buying. I know it is a hard choice to make due to not knowing history of animal, and many choose to buy for other reasons. I worked in a shelter for some time and it makes me happy to see.

I wouldn't want to get a dog from shelter bc u never know what their temperament is and u don't know what the dog has been through.

Rawhide bones are really bad for dogs! They’ve been known to splinter and cause stomache and intestinal damage! Congrats on your new dog! I can tell you love her and want what’s best for her.

I would stay away from anything rawhide. We have 7 dogs and I had to take one to the vet due to the rawhide bones, where as my sister's Boxer had to have surgery to remove the rawhide

She's a beauty. Rescue dogs are the best! I'd recommend switching out the cow rawhide bones for pig twist stick bones made out of pig skin to chew on. Cow rawhides as they tear pieces off or they get smaller expand as they get wet and get really gummy. They can get stuck down dogs throats, and cut off their airway, killing them before you realize there is a problem and/or may not be able to get it out if you do. I've had them get stuck in two of my dogs, and thankfully the were pPugs with short necks so I could reach them with my fingers and pull them out. They can also get lodged in their sto.ach or intestines. My vet later told me they were a really bad choice and recommended the smoked pig skin twists instead. You can buy them in packs of 10 or 20 at Walmart or Target. Don't by the ones that are filled in the middle with chopped up hard junk. Works kind of like a frisbee but not hard to throw. Lands on "legs" so it's a bit off the ground and easy for a dog to pick up. Main part is sturdy canvas. My labradoodles LOVE them and hold up! Get a harness it’s easier on the pup and won’t hurt their neck! And you will have better control. Also I had a corral type cage for my dog he liked that better than the kennel. Sending lots of love!!! You will have so many great memories with her!❤️

Chewy is THE BEST for food, toys, and treats. The customer service is incredible too. I go between Purina Pro Plan and Victor for food. They have great deals on the foldable metal crates too. I personally avoid rawhides as well. Bully sticks are expensive, but highly recommend!

Thank you for tescuing! As a lifelong dog owner and now a rescuer and previous shelter volunteer it warmscmy heart to see her in a living home with 2 little boys to live her and burn off energy with everyday! She will love that yard! During her period of adjustment, please take her out frequently to learn her potty routine. Since she is still a puppy, keep her on puppy food for a few months. With food you get what you pay for! It has a big impact on their health. Costco brand food is excellent or look at dogfoodadvisor.com; they do quality ratings. You can find quality food at all price points. Your vet can also make recommendations as well. Also take her to a vet soon for a general health check and to establish a relationship with a vet. Please be cautious of buying cheap flea/tick prevention products at stores like Walmart because some brands are harmful. And monthly heartworm preventativescare also important. Heartworms can cause significant damage and is expensive and painful to treat. I also recommend a microchip for permanent identification and make sure to register it! Your 6 foot privacy fence will be perfect for her! Her breed has a lot if energy and if not regularly exercised could get into trouble but with Israel and Sam she might be the one needing the break! Congratulations!
