There is some false information in this video, The mansion was sold to the neighbor and he agreed Heff could live there till he died. When he died the new owner was going to tear it down because it was a complete dump. He was going to combine both his properties and build a massive estate. The city would not allow him to do that so now he has torn down all the zoo stuff and the grotto and is renovating what's left.

That was not true until late 2000s. Like 2006 maybe. It definitely wasn't like that in 2002-2004. It was before smartphones and social media. No cameras were allowed and there was security there, whom would confiscate any cameras they saw. The reasoning wasn't dark as it sounds. It was because the parties were full of the most famous celebrities at the time and the allure was it's anonymity. Beautiful women, partying, and nobody hassled the celebrities, no autographs were requested and they didn't need security to keep people from hassling them. They were amazing and I never saw anything alarming (unless you consider his girlfriends sneaking upstairs to their own rooms doing coke all night. But I personally heard them say that Hef would freak out if he knew. They were worried there might be cameras in their rooms, but Hef never said anything and they were high and paranoid).

As in everything all the people who complained or sued only did so once Hefner was old and weak. Nobody was forced to be there or even work there, but they act as if they were. They just wanted one last paycheck out of the place and man before if fell. It wasn't just entertainment celebs that were there. Sports , business even politicians were regulars there. Heck it was so well known and popular it made into Beverly Hills Cop II and as itself, not just a random location. Just glad it wasn't torn down or so renovated that it became unrecognizable. Many people owe what careers they had to that place. All of which would've NEVER happened if Hefner had stayed in Chicago. The internet killed both this mansion AND Playboy as a whole. But unlike other mags, Playboy had some class to it. Real stories, advice and some of the biggest well know people from authors to diplomats came there and did interviews. Some did so at this house.

The original Chicago mansion was unique. The building took up a city block, had a swimming pool hidden inside with a fire station brass pole for quick entry, it rocked. I think it had a better vibe than the L.A. location. At the Chicago mansion, the penthouse hosted "Playboy After Dark", a black & white recorded show featuring celebrities in a smaller, more intimate setting. L.A. was a sleazy free-for-all, lots of drug fueled parties, not classy like the Chicago era.
