Will Smith Slaps Chris Rock
During the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022, Will Smith walked onstage and slapped presenter and comedian Chris Rock after Rock joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head with a reference to the film G.I. Jane. Smith then returned to his seat and yelled to Rock, twice, saying "Keep my wife's name out your f***ing mouth!" Pinkett Smith had been diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and would later shave her head due to the condition. Later in the night, Smith was named Best Actor for King Richard and apologized to the Academy of Motion Pictures and the other nominees, but not to Rock, in his acceptance speech. Following public backlash, Smith issued a formal apology. ABC, The Academy, and the Screen Actors Guild condemned Smith following the incident, which is currently being reviewed by the Academy's Board of Governors. Rock declined to press charges against Smith, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
On April 1, 2022, Smith pre-emptively tendered his resignation from the Academy, writing in part:
"I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate."
The AMPAS President David Rubin accepted the resignation in an official statement but said they would continue their investigation. Smith's resignation means he is no longer able to vote on Oscar nominations as a member of the Academy. Commentators have speculated that Smith's resignation from the Academy and other related fallout from the slap would damage his "family brand."

Will Smith was more concerned about keeping his wife's name out of other men's mouths, than his wife's mouth off of other men. That was the joke he artfully delivered without delivering it when he responded to Will with "I could..." but won't.

I don’t care what Jada has said or done. I don’t care what Chris said or did. This slap was assault, not self defense. People need to stop making excuses for a man who responded to words with violence. A man who then smirked as he sauntered off. Refused to leave when they asked him too. Took an Oscar and gave a speech in which he did not apologize to the person he assaulted. How many days did it take for him to apologize to Chris…

The fact that he was allowed to come up and get his award, and having everyone clap for him, given what just happened with him slapping Chris, truly disgusts me. It tells me other celebs and people there, will praise a currently violent person as long as they win an award. Will doesn't strike me as a continual violent person. He made a mistake, he knows he did, and the real rage inside of him came from Jada and their relationship. Chris should have never gotten slapped, period. No one should ever experience violence of another, over a joke. I agree with Mark here, where the slap was a last minute decision. Maybe Will thought, if I show her I can stick up for her, she might want to make our relationship work? In reality though, Will needs to get away from Jada asap. They clearly aren't right for each other, and Will keeps on getting hurt and manipulated and cheated on from Jada. Imo, I believe Jada settled for Will all them years ago, meaning when she lost Tupac, she said, okay screw it, I'll marry Will because I don't want to be alone. I know she was dating Will before Pacs death, but she said in a few interviews at that time that her and Will were just having fun, and it wasn't anything real serious, so I believe she seriously latched onto Will after she lost pac, even though pac has stated multiple times that he would never date or marry Jada. She was just a best friend, a sister who not bonded by blood, but bonded by their close relationship over the years. Again, these are just my opinions on the matter, so please take it with a grain of salt. Thank you gentlemen and thank you Lola!! 💜🤝

I think Will Smith is actually most angry with his wife, not truly Chris Rock. They have made it known they have an “ open marriage”. She has spoken about a relationship with a younger man, who lived in the family home for a while. I suspect Will smith was hurt and angry about that and for whatever reason, Chris Rock’s remark made Smith feel he had to defend his wife’s honor, because all the gossip about the wife. I do believe Rock controlled his own emotion beautifully . Far more obviously, than Smith did! I lost respect for will Smith that day and I admire Chris Rock far more than I already did, because of his comedic talent. Bravo Mr Rock.

Full disclosure: I'm a woman of color who has lost over 50% of my long, thick, black, course, curly ethnic hair and essentially all my eyelashes due to medical issues. Rock is a comedian, the only people who still can exercise free speech without fear. Rock didn't know about her alleged alopecia. For years, she blamed very overly tight braids and other hairstyles for losing her edges and eventually some of her hair. Look at her beautiful, almost perfect head. Hairline waaaay back. Like when you lose your edges. Even if she has alopecia, Rock wasn't referring to that. He joked about her being the next badass GI Jane. Will groveled and squirmed and cried while she made him sit at her red table for an hour, trying her best to justify her adulterous acts with their son's friend yet insists on calling it an entanglement and blamed Will. Now, perhaps there were needs she she had which weren't being met. No husband or wife can meet 100 % of your needs but you owe them an opportunity to resolve matters...privately without telling the world all the details. So, he's been humiliated and emasculated by his wife and made fun of by the nation and he let it build up and took out his pain, anger, embarrassment, and frustration on Rock who btw, handled himself like a true professional. Most people would have either frozen or defended themselves. He did neither. He kept hosting and kept his composure. ¡Bravo y bendiciones, Chris Rock! 🙏💙

Mark, you are the first person that has commented how dangerous the hard slap was. Smith could have broken Rock's jaw. or Rock could have fallen and broken his neck or split his skull on the hard floor. I have been on many County Grand juries and had to hear so many friends and brothers get into a friendly drunk brawl and end up accidentally killing the other person. There is never an excuse to hit another person except in self defense.

There was a whole media campaign here in Aus a few years back about the dangers of the sucker punch, slogan was "one punch" or something because a young man died from one coward's punch. Really dangerous. Law enforcement should have pressed charges regardless of rock's wishes as it was a live televised assault.

Absolutely could have injured Rock seriously. And even though Rock took it like a champ, he still could have some injuries that he hasn't disclosed. Sore neck, sore jaw, headaches? Interesting to hear about the campaigns in New Zealand and Australia to teach people that a sucker punch can kill. In the US, we're happy if somebody punches somebody instead of shooting them. Sadly. I mean that partially jokingly, but partially 100% truly.

I think it is worth 1 important note about how Smith handled this during his speech. When a person craps themselves in public like Will Smith did here, quickly showing regret is a good strategy. Will had a ONCE IN A LIFETIME opportunity to give a speech 15-minutes after this happened (how often do you get a public forum after committing battery). By showing no real remorse, accepting his award, failing to apologize, accepting a standing ovation, and giving a self-serving speech ... he condemned himself to the reasonable human (which most people are). The support he received should shame Hollywood for a while. Imagine if Will stood up and said: what I did was wrong and I apologize to Chris for losing my cool, please do not applaud me because I don't deserve it, I will not accept this award because of my actions here today. He may have even gotten a ton of support for showing some class.

It was an unprecedented incident. This is the most prestigious awards show for actors so it is assumed everyone will be on their best behaviour. Smtih was never known to be a typically violent troublemaker of any kind and it was a live broadcast so in the moment, when something unexpected happens, it's not always easy to figure out how to act. On top of that the Academy would've known he was minutes away from winning his own award. I can imagine it was chaos behind the scenes trying to figure out what to do, especially as it was an isolated incident. I think that's why they eventually banned him for ten years because they had to set some sort of example after not acting in the moment.

Scott Rouse, you’re absolutely right that this bizarre event changed perceptions, probably forever. It’s interesting: I was a Will Smith fan for decades. More specifically, I admired his acting skills and really liked the guy he *seemed to be* IRL. Apart from the head-scratching wonkiness in his parenting and “life partner” decisions, I liked him a lot as an actor and individual. Conversely, for whatever unknown reason, I had never been a Chris Rock fan. BUT…that all changed cataclysmically after the attack on Chris Rock. Smith couldn’t have shouted more loudly that he was never the guy I thought he was, which has permanently altered him in my estimation. Inexcusable! Fortunately, Chris Rock was also not the guy I had perceived *him* to be, and my respect for him has skyrocketed. I can’t imagine anyone else who could/would have handled being HIT, onstage, at the *Oscars* for Pete*s sake, and in front of an international-freaking-audience with more professionalism, more aplomb, and more dignity than Chris Rock. I hope the rest of Hollywood takes a leaf from his book, because Rock showed the world what “adulting” is all about. My only regret is that he hasn’t sued WS over this in Civil Court. Even so, count me as one of CR’s *many* new fans. Your analyses were all spot-on, guys!👍🏻

Chris Rock has said in the past he had an adult diagnosis of non verbal learning disorder (NVLD). This basically means he struggles to read body language/ facial expressions in other people. While he was laughing nervously as Will Smith walked up to the stage Chris Rick himself was wrestling with the fact that had no idea what was going on. He also has a lot of trauma around being bullied as a child so perhaps has had practice at down playing being assaulted whilst being watched by others. Poor guy.

@Lindsey yep exactly 👍🏼. It also goes to show why Chris behaved the way he did as Will stormed the stage, that is, he was standing with his hands behind his back instead of a more defensive posture. Everyone goes on about how he made a joke about someone with alopecia (although Chris has come out and said he did not know of Jada’s diagnosis) but I just wanted to highlight that In that moment Will Smith physically attacked someone with a disability….. and Jada thought it was hilarious.
