I'm a child psychiatrist. I met a teenage patient two years ago, who was a rising star in the regional MMA scene. His reason for coming to see me was difficulty focusing. At first, I suspected he had Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But he declined medication to treat that. Later, he told me about being anxious all of the time. Then, I figured his focus problems were caused by the anxiety. In later office visits, he opened up about nightmares, flashbacks, panic attacks, and hypervigilance. The picture became complete, that he has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He didn't have any of the normal risk factors - no abuse, abandonment, financial problems, or other trauma. But the one stressor he had was the ongoing need to compete in MMA competitions. He started attending psychotherapy, and soon after, he decided not to compete anymore. Since then, his anxiety resolved, and he is much calmer. The lesson here is that young people may not be mentally prepared to compete in high-level blood sports. So parents should be careful not to push their kids to compete.

@@fnc5369 This is one of the dumbest conclusions ever. The amount of documentation on mental disorders and the characteristics of them are undeniable. Maybe someone doesn't have x y z... but when I was diagnosed with PTSD and I went home and looked into PTSD symptoms, I literally had almost all the symptoms. I would have helped myself a lot sooner by going to someone who could have pointed it out to me.

I am so deeply saddened by the realization that beautiful and talented Victoria has passed. And then to hear that big sister Angela has also been struggling with the darkness that plagued young Victoria is just overwhelmingly tragic. I hope the Lee family continues to work on healing their mind and spirit. Martial Art without spiritual enlightenment can lead to darkness that can be difficult to recover from. I pray for their well being.

As a football player from PW to College to semi-pro, and fighter, I know I have CTE. It drove me to rage, alcohol abuse, depression, and caused a lot of pain in myself and others. Please people, when you see someone that has been in contact/combat sports for a long time, that person has a medical reason, NOT an excuse, for snapping at things to which others may not. I know, NO one should behave the way I did. Not trying to justify, but just trying to bring awareness. I was told CTE affects youth-brains more than mature ones. Victoria may have been a victim of it.

I used to train with her parents before she was born. Her parents were really competitive. However, they couldn't be champions themselves. They just pushed them too hard.

Right before I moved from Hawaii in 2012, I had the pleasure of meeting Christian, and later Angela at a church camp for teens. They mentioned MMA almost like it was more of a hobby than their dream, at the time we were all just happy teens at camp. Christian ended up being part of the group within camp we formed, and man when I tell you I remember how kind he was, I'm convinced he was the humblest, and kindest teenager I've ever come across to date. And his sister wasn't that much more different. After camp we all got each other socials, but didn't keep in contact for long. Seeing friends whom I knew are good people, rise to the top of ONE championship over the years gave me a sense of pride and genuine happiness for them. Now I can't help but feel sad for the kids at camp that I remember. It makes me wonder if they even actually wanted to fight in the first place, or if it was something forced onto them. Especially considering how they talked about training MMA like it was something they did to pass the time. It's been so long now that I'm ashamed to check in on them, and don't even know if they remember I exist on their friends lists. I hope they found the peace they've always deserved.

Angela is so sweet. It's terrible that the girls in this family attempt to end themselves, one of them tragically following thru. If you want to end it, remember the people in your life who loved you. And try to remember that every day you're alive, the haters seethe. The moment you choose to exit, the terrorists win. Literally just breathing everyday is a W over them. Its very alien to me for athletes to want to end themselves because fighting sports usually save people from depression, self-hate & other demons. It teaches people how to love themselves, builds self-confidence, ignites a will to overcome, etc. I know stuff like making weight, injuries, losing or having to give up the sports when u weren't ready yet, put you in a dark spot (been there) because they are pretty rough obstacles that are massive hurdles but this was crazy. I guess it's the pressure from being the greatest & feeling you might let down those who depend on you but u can either win or lose in this kinda sport. Ending yourself will let down everyone even worse than losing because you can't make a comeback. You can't ever win again. You lose a fight, you can go cry, flip tables & go back to train for a comeback.

I believe the reason is due to the extreme pressure of her Asian parents who also are martial artists. Coming from an Asian immigrant household and observing all my Asian friend's families, many traditional Asian parents have children due to the reason of societal expectation of having children, rather than the desire to love and care for them. Asian parents are quite selfish at heart and raise them to be expressions of success of themselves as "parents", rather than supporting their children in their own interests. Asian parents do this to prove their own worth in the world at the expense of their children, like tools. Many parents do this in general, but Asian parents really take it to an extreme and they do not have much capacity to show expressions of love. Imagine living with your robotic boss at home and not your mum and dad. It explains why the Lee family also closed down their family-owned MMA facility after Victoria's passing. For a lot of Asian children, once they grow up, they desire to meet someone and leave this toxic family culture/household behind and create their own family with more care and love. Angela seems to have done this and gradually left the MMA world after having children and starting her family. I believe Victoria was suffering while competing and suffering at home as well. May she rest in peace.

That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. Putting pressure on children is not a selfish thing. Also, pressure on children to excel and love are not mutually exclusive things. I think that not putting any pressure on children is more selfish and lazy. It is more like an excuse for being lazy to properly prepare your child for an adult life. White parents maybe show their affection and not put pressure on their kids but it is simply because they don't care. So called "loving" white parents end up in nursery homes when they get old, placed there by their "loving" children who also don't care about their parents. Old people ending up in nursery homes are very rare in asian families.
@mc68kf
@mc68kf 4 ай бұрын
@arystanbeck914 I think you are mistaking what is being said. Putting pressure on their kids out of their own desire to be known as successful parents is very different to supporting their children and giving them their own opportunity and path. If the children felt supported in what they wanted to do, why would they attempt suicide? Because they are mentally weak as MMA fighters? No, it's rather they feel like they are locked in a prison of their parents desires and rationalise that they may never be happy and free. Americans desire for a country of freedom, rather than a country of restriction like North Korea for a reason. Parents bring children into this tough world out of their own desire, not the children's, should they not give them at least try give them a life of opportunity with the resources they have?
@arystanbeck914
@arystanbeck914 4 ай бұрын
@@mc68kf I think you are mistaken if you think that parents who put pressure on their kids do not shower them with love. You are also mistaken simply spoiling kids and over-indulging kids showering with love. I have lived long and have seen a lot of different cultures, and believe me, in cultures or families where kids are required to work hard, look after their siblings, help their parents, those kids grow up less selfish, more understanding of needs of others, more parent loving, harder working. In contrary, in the Western culture where kids are overindulgent they grow up selfish, consumeristic, weak, they. more likely to become drug addicts or alcoholics.
@mc68kf
@mc68kf 4 ай бұрын
@@arystanbeck914 @arystanbeck914 then I guess you must come from a white family? You won't understand what how Asian families live their lives unless you live it. You can try your best to understand, but at the end of the day, it's more of a life experience to understand. There is a clear difference between supporting and giving them opportunity and spoiling them. You are mentioning two extremes, what is desired is balance. Disciplining is extremely important, pressure is needed but not from the parents own desires of what they want the children to become.

Agree.. I also think her parents just gave her too much pressure to win. I know her parents back in the days in Canada before Angela was born. They were really competitive in martial arts, but they never won a championship. So, they're trying to make their kids achieve something that they couldn't achieve themselves.

Feels like too much pressure to do great in MMA took its toll on them. And it's the biggest reason for suicide attempt and Victoria's suicide. Therefore I understand why they're not gonna be back fighting again. Enough is enough. They lost one precious life already.

I think this is pretty positive spin, but this is a horror show run by the parents. What's unspoken is how tiger parenting works in martial art circles among Asians. Look, besides the Bruce Lee and Wing Chun era, dude, no one takes martial arts seriously in the Chinese community. The martial arts scene in America is mainly due to the Hong Kong expats and Taiwan folks that kept many arts alive which barely survived the Boxer Rebellion and other countless Chinese issues that plagued the continent since the dawn of the Black Death in the 13th century. It's kinda like muay thai in Thailand. Only foreigners and old men care about it. It's seen as low class. Flip back to the 808 and the Hawaii scene. Lots of minorities here mixing. Lots of martial arts cultures from Japan, the Philippines, China, Indonesia, etc. And in this mecca and Singapore, the Lee parents thought the winning move in the 21st century was to turn their 3 children into prize fighters. Look, I'm 37, no kids, I just have dogs. But damn, I am not fcuking letting my kids turn into prize fighters. You do not risk CTE damage for money if you're in my family. Period. I will not send MY CHILDREN to do go do what I cannot. I will not send them into a gauntlet of knock outs, TKO's, strangles and blood for mere dollars. I've known some other martial arts families, lots of Portuguese families from jiu jitsu of course, Wing Chun and I even got to know Cung Le's family cuz my girl was a bestie of Cung's sister. I DJ'ed the wedding for the sis, it was awesome to have Cung Le as a groom's man hahaha. Still, brawler culture is dumb. I get that there's martial arts clans out there, 100%. But they're mired in self-destruction and pain, despite the success, cultural impact and general lifestyle. Just look at the Gracie clan. Rockson isn't quite Victoria Lee...but there's just danger in taking a fresh young soul, teaching them only combat skills and turning them loose into the world to fight for mere fcuking dollars. Just ranting. I blame the parents. And it's never about the score at half-time as Tom Brady teaches us, it's all about what you have in the end at the final score. And shit, nearly burying two daughters sounds like you fcuked up dad. Maybe I'm taking too much accountability for this father, I don't know. For K-selected Asian folks, this is an unmitigated travesty and tragedy. You do not send petite well-fed little Asian daughters out there against third world hyenas out there...for rent money.

They are such a beautiful family. It’s so sad what happened to Victoria it’s obvious how Angela feels partially responsible since she went through similar issues. Angela has a family now. She got to retire in her own terms and has cemented her legacy. Her little brother Adrian is being coached by Christian (the other brother) and is currently 1-0 with a crazy debut and has another fight in early September.

But their health is and should be the utmost priority. Take care of yourselves, and sane goes ti each and everyone reading this.

There has to be studies that shows correlation between anxiety of teens in individual sports vs teens in team sports. I think youth athletics needs to be team oriented so that their experience is shared with their peers and supervised by coaches and trainers with training/certification in sports psychology. The PAL boxing team I trained with in my youth enjoyed competing because we (the peers) motivated, cheered, congratulated, and consoled each other during each individuals competition, as a team effort. Parents main focus should be seeing the joy sports bring to their children. If they don't see enjoyment, they should seek counseling and possibly withdrawal from competition.

My dad forced me to compete in sports I never wanted a part in. In high school, I wanted to go to church and paddle. My father had different plans. Football? I sucked at. Wrestling? I was a natural, but it wasn't for me. The two sports I wanted to play were baseball and basketball, and my mom supported it. Then, my dad (who at the time was separated from my mom) stepped in, and his "training" took all the fun out of that, too. My biggest regret is not standing up to my father about what I wanted and that he needed to stop enforcing his way of doing things. To this day, Im healing on everything my father did.

Ya I was asked to join a team once I turned 18 in San Diego. Once I started having to fight 30+ adults. I decided I didn’t want to. I was doing it for fun and these adults were doing it to prove something to themselves. Something about having to fight people who didn’t have any reason to live other than fighting really fucked my head up. I’m a hairstylist now and rather than make people suffer I want to see people happy. Do I miss fighting, fuck yeah. But seeing people at their lowest after fights hurt more then ever losing.
