I underwent the same journey. At first seeing nothing wrong with the concept. Whether it was designed at the outset to be thin-end-of-the wedge I am now wondering. Perhaps it was sinister social engineering and orchestrated desensitizing against resistance to change. Trudeau always told Canada “diversity is our strength”. During his recent Christmas address he said: “[Let’s…] find strength in our differences”. See how the message has changed. Now it seems the burden has been shifted. Now it’s OUR (Canadians) job, effort, energies that must be harnessed to reap the promised benefits which were heretofore heralded as understood, self-evident and automatic. Before, it was presented as Diversity = Strength. This has morphed into: all citizens have to just work harder to find strength in the morass of increasing social tensions and despair. None of those negatives are the government’s fault of course.

@@billr3053 I had a similar experience at my job where I worked with a bunch of women and I got stuck with all the heavy lifting FOR THE SAME PAY. There was nothing about their diversity that added to the job. There was nothing they could do that I couldn't do just as well and because of my physical strength I could also in some cases do it better. I was more valuable to the corporate machine but I had to basically worker harder for the same pay so they could have an easier shift. The corporate world has conflicting values when you introduce this DEI stuff. You can't claim efficiency is important in a physical job and then hire a 4 foot tall Asian girl. She just can't keep up so the extra weight gets put on the men. Resentment will eventually build up if you are paying the same but it's obvious who's actually contributing the most.

I think this story highlights the bigger issue of DEI: we're just checking a box to make sure we have enough students of this colour or that gender without asking if they really belong at Harvard. Used to be merit got you into Harvard. In my 88 plus years, I have seen a lot - In spite of Claudine Gay's disgusting appearance on the scene, I still have not developed poor opinions of "minorities". I have enjoyed the privilege of living and working with many people from diverse and interesting backgrounds over my lifetime. During the War, 3 men from Jamaica took their meals at our farmhouse in southern New Hampshire. They worked with my dad on a large farm nearby. After the War, my family moved to the Chicago area, where I attended high school with students who were of German, Dutch, Polish, Black, Italian, French, Spanish origins. We had no "diversity, equity, inclusion" training or classes. Our parents and teachers taught us manners and respect for others - We knew what the rules were and by and large did what we were supposed to be doing, or else faced the consequences of wrong decisions.
